Hey Jamie, thanks for the fascinating deep dive. I really love and appreciate this sort of "detective" work you're doing here across the releases. As far as the edits are concerned, I think I agree with your final conclusions. But whatever the real reasons were that lead to this inconsistent approach, I still think the benefits of this release far outweigh the flaws, at least for me. Would I prefer the sessions to be unedited? Yes. But in this case I can live with it. It's partly a sensitive topic as has also been mentioned in some of the comments here. So I'm sort of fine with it. What really drives me crazy are the things they did with the "Making of" releases for Blue Hawaii and especially Jailhouse Rock. Harmless and needless edits, tape speed issues and humming etc, this really gets me going and I'm not so forgiving. I love this set and I'm glad I have it. But you're also right, some things are pointless and fans should generally react and push. Therefore I will support you in this, because the way you and John approach and handle these things is exactly how I would like to see them handled. Keep up the great work!

Hi, Oliver! You're very welcome! Deep diving into sessions is one of my favorite things, so it's definitely a labor of love - even if I'd rather trust the label than have to go over everything because they've burned us in the past. I do think the good outweighs the bad, but being *very* loud about this and looking for more options is the key to getting these done right. And thank you - we're glad to have every fan on board that we can get! And we have even more great ideas on how to make "final word" releases truly "final word" when it comes to sessions/etc that exist on tape - now we just have to work our way in there and make it happen! 😁

@@EAPSociety I think you’re spot on with the “tourist” theory because no casual fans buy FTD or even know it exist. Heck it took me a few years to catch on myself. It’d be cool if they did a clean and dirty version like labels used to for rap etc back in the day.
@EAPSociety4 ай бұрын
@marcoesquandolez4737 Yeah - having two versions would be good, imo - but I don't think FTD does enough sales numbers to make that worth doing, sadly. I think certain session sets - specifically this one - just shouldn't be sold in the Graceland shops.

I love that the master takes aren't the extended versions and sound great,the cussing doesn't bother me but Elvis wouldn't have wanted it to get out,like Marty Lacker said,Elvis wouldn't have wanted the outtakes out either,i don't have a problem with them editing out anything that hints at racism in the "sensitive" times we live in today,i admire your attention to detail and how much you care about preserving the history! Thanks for your informed insights!

Thanks, Dan! Always happy to help! As for the editing, if the label truly had concerns about that, they would have been doing that from the first release in 1999 - but we've even had swearing on public releases at this point, so editing a collectors' release just seems pointless - especially since swearing on this release is edited in some spots but not others (they leave in instances of every curse word they edit out, so it's not like they had a "line," either), so there's not even any consistency at all. I do have the most sympathy for things that could be taken as racially charged, but even then, if they truly have to do it, there are better ways that leave fans with better options to restore them for themselves. I promise you that this next sentence isn't directed at you, but at all of us fandom as a whole, because we've all done it: the fanbase has been conditioned over the years to make excuses for the label (perhaps because it feels like defending Elvis, in a once-removed way), and that's a shame, because the fan base putting pressure is the reason the session releases are in order at all (the Viva Las Vegas sessions are how they'd have done them all otherwise) and that pressure is our greatest power as fans - and I'd love to see us all really use that in powerful ways to move things forward. And if we can help with that, even better! 😁

@EAPSociety4 ай бұрын
That's a good theory, too - but the odd thing is that many tracks that have language edited also have the same words elsewhere in the same track that aren't. So it really just feels random - or maybe there's a bunch they just didn't catch? Very odd!

On another note, Jamie did you see the guy on uoutube The Elvis Workshop channel,he said he talked to Ernst and Matt Ross Spang and they said when they stripped down suspicious minds the timing issue is really on the recordings,i find that hard to believe when digital can screw up so easily!
@EAPSociety4 ай бұрын
LOL! I did not see that! Considering this is the first release with this problem, I highly doubt that; even if it's true, Matt should have been given the corrected copy to work from. Also, the other timing and editing issues on CD 2 leave any claims of "it's on the tape" to be not only suspect, but completely laughable as suggestions, and I sincerely hope both of them didn't actually say that.
@freddysnip62574 ай бұрын
That's a bloody lie of Ernst and MRS, just compare it to the undubbed master on the 7 inch FTD series of American recordings, and it is perfect! Would seem odd if Reggie Young who was a renowned session guitarist would not play in sync with the band for the mastertake only. It is a digital screw up by MRS. Same for Any Day Now. I mean people can make mistakes, but what is upsetting is that they refuse to admit it was a mistake on their part, so they say it was on the original tape. They always say that!
@EAPSociety4 ай бұрын
@freddysnip6257 Hi, Freddy! Well, I think they're suggesting that the tape channels are off, not that Reggie played off. We do know the 4-track tapes have problems, but any issues like that, assuming Ernst and MRS actually did say this, should have been corrected digitally before being sent for mixing and mastering.
@freddysnip62574 ай бұрын
@@EAPSocietyHi Jamie, I see your point, but why didn't this problem occur on the FTD Memphis 7 inch series, publishing the undubbed master? And I think it would also be apparant on the original overdubbed single release. And after all they screwed up more things in all those years, and we barely get a replacement disc. I can only recall in a few instances.It's very easy to make a mistake with digital files. I can't proof it, but my gut says the original undubbed tape is perfect. And you're right, if it was a mistake they could have easily fixed it before printing the cd's. All it takes is to listen to the files carefully, before approving them.
@EAPSociety4 ай бұрын
@freddysnip6257 Assuming there is a speed issue on the tape (which we don't know for sure), then the the de-sync had to've been fixed on the FTD (and other) releases digitally. Again assuming that's all true, why MRS wasn't given a corrected tape (because why would restoration be his job, I don't think he's that kind of engineer typically) is an outright failure on the part of whoever sent him the multitracks to work from. Alternatively, it could have happened during the mixing session, somehow wasn't caught, and everyone's playing a fun game of "what excuse gives the best butt covering"? 🤣

I`m a little late but heard this one today :) One thing thats always bugs me is when FTD fadeout almost every outtake they release :( Heard that Jamie probably meant that the fadeout are on the original sessions tapes? I just wish you, Jamie and John could consult with the powers that be to fix these issues so they are corrected and "possibly" replacement discs could be issued. @EAPSociety4 ай бұрын
You're not wrong, but if we actually followed Elvis's wishes, FTD wouldn't exist at all. That's why, at this point, I look at these under a more historical lens: having these helps us get a deeper sense of Elvis's artistic process, even in songs he didn't care for.
@freddysnip62574 ай бұрын
Interesting revieuw Jamie. What I don't get is that FTD is not consistent with editing out rough/X-rated language and profanities. We have the X-rated version of Stranger in my own home town on the FTD TTWII rehearsal set, We have the MF word in Mojo working on FTD. Come on FTD this is a collectors label with just around 5.000-10.000 copies max worldwide. We are adults , I mean how many people are going to hear this? The biggest problem in this world are the so-called sensitive people who get offended by anything these days. Put a warning sticker on it with "not for the faint-hearted" But I think the sessions should be released unedited, except for "dead tape" if it's running too long. FTD is walking in mysterious ways with editing out rough language, and sometimes just leaves it in. But hey! I have the bootleg recording of Wings of an Angel unedited. Nowadays the bad language on new releases by artists do contain much more bad language in the lyrics than Elvis did in between the takes. I don't see the problem with releases like Guitar man. I recall the Life Story Elvis did on the '69 Sony boxset! Talking about X-rated, nobody took offence when that one came out!
@EAPSociety4 ай бұрын
Thanks, Freddy! Yeah, the inconsistency in approach from the label is rather baffling, to say the least. If it were me, I'd just have some releases not be as widely available; sell only via the fan clubs, and call it a night. Estimates have put these session releases at about 2500-3000 copies, and if some are limited to 1500, so be it. I'm not sure if it's people being sensitive so much as it being pre-emptively edited, but another option for folks would be nice.
@freddysnip62574 ай бұрын
@@EAPSociety Hi Jamie, maybe you're right about edited pre-emptively. Anyways I'm thinking about buying this set and add it to my collection. I'm still not sure about the Elvis Memphis set from Sony yet. One downside with these sessions sets are too many outtakes in order of the same song. Especially when it is a song like going home. About Wings of an Angel? You either put it complete on a set like this, or do not include it at all! And it's on bootleg and all over You tube as well. So what are they're trying to hide? 😂
@EAPSociety4 ай бұрын
@freddysnip6257 Yeah, the pre-emptive editing is just a hunch on my part, but it wouldn't surprise me. On the songs all being in order, I'd say rip the CDs, put the audio on an ipod or phone, and just hit shuffle; or if you have a CD player with shuffle, that almost works, too. I actually enjoy long sessions with the takes in order, just because you can really pick up on how Elvis and the band shift focus and feel to get to the master. It's interesting on hits songs for obvious reasons, but I think it shows just as much when it's a lesser song: you get even more of a sense of their mental throughline that way. 😁 As for what they're trying to hide or what they're thinking.. other that what I guessed at in the video, I have no idea! 🤣
