Before you buy Onyx Boox Palma: black vs white true differences, accessories and issues

I just received my white Palma today and I almost commented that mine doesn't do any of that. But, you're right, it does. I never saw the top line because I immediately set the refresh to HD. I also didn't see any bright outline while I was setting it up or reading. I've had the Palma on practically all day, evening and night in multiple and changing lighting situations, and I only saw the outline when I turned the brightness setting to 100% in a moderately lit room. I think most people won't see the bright outline in typical use scenarios. But now that I've seen it, a little bit of my joy bubble just deflated. I'm still glad that I got the white one instead of the black. I love the gentle color transition from screen to case and the absence of a black bezel. It helps the device disappear into the written page.

White Palma was my first choice and I absolutely loved it - it is elegant and has indeed more natural "paper" look. Also there are not so many devices with white bezels nowadays, which makes it rather unique. Bright outline did not bother me much and at the beginning I considered this black line as a feature (though it was visible in most of my usage scenarios). Just out of curiosity I got the black Palma for comparison and honestly I did not expect any difference. I was also afraid that the black frame would make my eyes more tired during long reading sessions, but so far I don't feel any difference in this respect. As a summary - I tend to return white one, but they are both fantastic devices.

Are you still available to see the bright outline if you change the screen settings to dark?

I can see the white outline or halo around the edges when reading in the dark and in darkmode💔😭 im not sure if i need to try to exchange it to black😭

I think I know what’s going on. The screen on your white unit is slightly misaligned. The screen is position is slightly lower than the one on your black unit. After watching many videos of other white Palma’s I noticed those screens are not misaligned compared to your unit. This defect is probably present on a complete production run of white Palma’s. I just ordered a white one one so I’ll post a follow up once I receive it. 4:05

It might be combination of factors. So far all the white units I saw had exactly same issue, plus better alignment of screen will not fix backlight bleeding (which is caused by more transparent bezel). In my opinion more transparent bezel contributes the most to the visibility of black line.

Thanks for the video! Now it makes me happier with my black version (I returned the white one). I have to admit I love the white version as well since it makes it unique. The black is too ordinary, especially it looks very similar to the Hisense Hi reader. But for me, the screen is the most important. I never noticed the black line at the top for the white until now that you mentioned it. There's a black line on the black as well but it's very close to the bezel and one really needs to tilt it to see it. I did notice the backlit line around the edge of the white one. This doesn't happen on my black one. I think maybe light reflects on white surface more? Another thing I want to point out is there's a very thin gap between the white frame & the gray bezel (especially at the 4 corners). It's much noticeable on the white one apparently. Another thing is the black speaker hole & censor hole are clearly showed on the white while on the black, they're hidden. Those might be a distraction. Also I dont' like how light can bleed through the gray bezel.

Thanks, totally agree with your comments. Indeed considering all the differences I find black Palma more balances overall. Otherwise I would definitely choose white one, which is still very very good - those who got it will not be disappointed. Also using white protective case or folding-flip case makes black Palma almost entirely white, so it is nice option as well.)

I had the white but returned it because of the white halo when used in dark mode and reading at night. Now not sure if i should get the black one or onyx boox go 6 or new kiddle 🙈

Really wanted a white ereader so bought it despite this video. Just returned for a black one because I couldn’t take the light halo when reading in dark mode at night. The brightness is just too much for bedtime reading without dark mode for me. White for aesthetics, black for function.

Onyx Boox Kant-2 is a good option indeed (in fact it is under-powered version of Palma), though I believe it is not sold in EU or USA.

Avoid the second sleeve case with white palma, I have it, and the internal black part left black spot that cannot be removed on the device itself

@@ismaels3471 I didn't buy at the time but I am reconsidering with the black Palma 2. The android version might be the thing that edges it over, and the RAM. I prefer the aesthetics of the white but this issue persists. I tried a Boox Go 6 but unfortunately the 2gb RAM is insufficient for reading on the go. By the time I've opened it up and got an app (neo reader or kindle) actually going, its time to move on with my day. Also kindle app crashes on launch 50% of the time. Unacceptable, so it has to be returned.

I'm quite satisfied with my black palma 1 at the moment and the differences between palma 1 and palma 2 are insignificant for my use-case scenario, so will probably pass on palma 2s and wait until they issue color palmas.) Though out of curiosity - maybe will still consider checking them if I have a chance!

@mmrlckt thanks for the reply! I just bought a palma 1 in black a week ago to see if I liked the device and I LOVED it, I plan to use the 30 day return policy and either purchase both black and white palma 2s when they hit best buy. Or just the black in case the 2 is using the same exact screens.

@mmrlckt i actually bought both the palma 1 in black and white and compared to the palma 2 in black and white and I found the palma 1s screen to be noticeably better. Brighter backlight text looks crisper and clearer. The palma 2 has more ghosting. If u prefer a dimmer and warmer screen then you may prefer the palma 2, but after playing around with both models, I found reading to be a better experience on the original palma.

What about the screen clarity? I've heard somewhere that because of the recessed screen in white versions, the glass is closer to the screen resulting in better clarity, or something like that. Can you comment on that?

I do not notice any difference in this regard, screen clarity is exactly the same (just checked now black palma 1 vs white palma 2)

Thats a misaligned screen on the white, its not by default on all white versions. You just need to replace it out by waranty. (At least where I live you can replace things by waranty like for a year or so)

I (as well as many people in here) tested several white palmas - same problems with each one and I believe even properly aligned screen will not fix all the issues.
