I just bought one, thanks for the tips! I bought it so I can do things like reading and listening to podcasts/music without having the allure of a smartphone. I’m going to nerf my smartphone so it does only a few things like navigation. In this way I want to find the balance between the good and useful things and the addiction risk of a smartphone and too much screen time.

@@JasonHowell I bought one a few months ago prior to a beach vacation. It was perfect for beach reading, as well as reading around the house. I find it very easy to use one handed, which I find myself needing when one of my cats decides it’s time to climb up on my lap or on my arm for pets. I use it whenever possible when I don’t need my phone as the screen is much more friendly to my old eyes.

I haven't pulled the trigger on the Palma yet. I might though. I have an older Nova 3 from Onyx Boox and I've loved it. But one of the reasons I love it is because it comes with a stylus which makes it so useful as a notepad as well. I wish they would make a Palma that comes with a stylus but I'm not sure that's going to happen. Anyway, I'm happy to see Onyx Boox becoming more popular. It would be nice to see competition from US companies in this particular device domain.

I love the form factor. It's a goldilocks device. I already have a Max Lumi 2, and a Tab C. Both are really nice and work extremely well. No complaints whatsoever. But for portability and versatility, this is really well designed. The fact that you have all the button and gesture options to really personalize it to your needs per app is wonderful. Yes, you lose a stylus support. No EMR devices can function on it. But it's not meant for that. It's meant for mobile content consumption. And still, it gives you access to the Google Play library that makes it much more useful than your normal Amazon Kindle, and can still let you enjoy all the Kindle content. So, it's not for everyone. Yes, it's less secure than the latest and greatest Android 14 Upside Down Cake. I would say if you intend to use it as a normal device, keep it off the LAN, since it would be a weak entry point for hackers. Other than that, if you treat it like another untrusted IOT device, then you'll be fine.

Great video, thank for the tips. Any concerns that the kindle app will stop supporting this old version of android at some point?
@JasonHowellАй бұрын
I mean, maybe eventually but probably not for a very long time if I had to guess. I don't think Amazon wants to stop supporting old versions of Android too quickly with the Kindle app. It's certainly in their best interest to keep more devices supported.

I’ve heard the Hibreak by Bigme is just like the Palma, and has SIM options as well as color e-ink option. Not sure it’s as popular though. Not sure why.
@KevinGaminАй бұрын
@@chrisrioux First, its primary language option is Chinese and, unfortunately, the conversation to English isn’t complete, so it’s a little awkward to use for users who are primary English speakers. Second, I’ve seen mixed reviews about its call capabilities. The Palma at least does what it says it’s for well. There’s also the Hisense H9 e-ink phone, I believe, but that seems to have fallen off the radar.

Set to continuous scroll and set the buttons to scroll… sadly the only wat
@Esli26Ай бұрын
I believe that that is because the kindle app hijacks the volume buttons. So you need to set the buttons to volume, and then use the kindle app settings to turn the 'volume key' into page controls. That's what another video said anyway

on the kindle app click Aa to change settings while on a book...the more settings or something next to layout then use volume to change pages if you are not able to override it from OS side

What about the android 11 OS not being supported? What does that mean for the Palma?
@JasonHowell2 ай бұрын
I don't understand what you mean about Android 11 OS not being supported. The books Palma runs on Android 11. So it's supported on the device. Are you talking about potential upgrades down the line to Android 12 or higher? I'd be highly skeptical that that will actually happen.
@DeepDelta5272 ай бұрын
@@JasonHowellyes. Android 11 is no longer supported as of feb 2024. Book releases firmware but Android 11 is no longer supported. It is common knowledge.
@DeepDelta5272 ай бұрын
Also the article you reference by David pierce specifically addresses this. I was just wondering what that actually means. He said in that article that eventually his apps would slowly stop working. I see other box devices with Android 11 but many new with 12.
@DeepDelta5272 ай бұрын
Also not trying to start a debate. Just genuinely concerned about it. I want to to know if you can get to the Liberty University online platform and library and if you can download logos Bible software to it with the 11OS. That was the reasoning behind my question.
@chrisriouxАй бұрын
From what I’ve read, this OS 11 is ancient, as it was released over 4 years ago.. Current Android OS is 15. This means not only lack of support for apps being updated in the Google Play store, but more importantly, lack of security patches for this older OS means it could be the low-hanging fruit on your LAN that lets hackers gain access to your network and potentially your accounts and personal data. I’m going to see if I can get a Palma 2 or something with a newer OS.
