I always enjoy your videos by the way. I have been a submariner purchaser, all vintage and neo (which were new in that time) and I got bored with them. Same with the OP Sea Dwellers. The Tudor sub like yours...is (to me) a 1680 Sub with different dial and name pretty much..... I Agree...the BB 41's are slabs and that is off-putting to me. The 58 and 54 are actually very nice watches. Pelagos 42 is a fun handsome and chunky watch. Enjoyed this vid thank you

My grandchildren gave me a 54 Tudor last week. At first I thought it was a watch from the 60s (I hadn't put my glasses on yet). It's a very nice tribute to the Submariners of my youth.

Great video, classic TGV. I went in on a BB58 gilt dial initially because it's the closest thing I can get to my dive watch grail - Rolex 14060M. After 1 year of ownership, I really appreciate it for its own personality and I absolutely love it. Couldn't do without it.

The ultimate alternative to a Rolex Submariner is a slightly used Dacia Sandero Stepway.

Great post! I have given this alot of thought. Your suggestion of the Dacia is certainly an alternative. But the ultimate? Surely we can go further than that? Can everyone suggest something more alternative than a Sandero? I need a good laugh ATM. Thanks for everyone's contributions.

You know me T! I’ve been lucky enough to have held and worn vintage subs and Tudor subs throughout the last 4 years because of this channel. Much that I prefer older historic references to own, in 2023 it ain’t practical!;) dodgy bezels, lightweight hollow link bracelets, clasps where you only have to tense your butt cheeks for it to pop out! The ETA’s reliable yes! Still after 40/50 years? Maybe but what can not be dismissed is the in house METAS and COSC movements Tudor have exclusively for their watches now. Yes they are a more affordable watch than it’s bigger brother Rolex BUT! It can no longer be said they are a poor man’s Rolex anymore. Nothing will feel like a Tudor either unless it has ‘Tudor’ on the dial;) love the philosophy my friend and you’re approach to this subject to!

I have a BB58 blue and just absolutely love it, ended up selling a datejust 41 because it got zero wrist time and was just sat in my collection gathering dust. I now rock a three watch collection and the black bay gets the most wrist time. I don't see Tudor as the brand people buy because they can't get a Rolex I see Tudor as the brand people buy who understand where Tudor is positioned in the segment. Excellent value for money.

Yup. The Pelagos proudly declares itself as a Tudor, not a wannabe Rolex. And, it's a truer spiritual descendant of the old Tudor subs, not an attempt to recapture nostalgia. Not that there's anything wrong with that, mind you.

Amazing knowledge and info Tristano! Thanks! Since 2019 I own the 58 and It's already worn and beautifully scratched... I love it. wears amazingly, it is also very pleasing aesthetically (for me, architect here), the thiner lines in the bezel compared to the thicker non matching lines (bezel-dial) from the 54, the red triangle and the second markers... The way the gilt catches light... even the clasp is shorter and although you can't "perfectly" adjust it, it fits more ergonomically. I wasn't looking for a Submarineresque vibe, I was looking for a Tudor that can age with me, although I love the Sub's history both Tudor's and Rolex. So I get the 54 is more refined... and I get the Pelagos 39 is amazing as a contemporary real tool watch, but this 58 is staying on my wrist and hopefully will end on my daughter's one day (bought it because of her being born). Cheers!

Pelagos 39 was a bit too dressy for me (and the example I handled had a bezel so misaligned it would beat any Seiko in a contest to misalign a bezel), so I ended up with a blue homage of it that kept the more toolish vibes of the bigger version on the dial and bezel. Love it. Only serious flaw I find is that the crown is a bit oversized for the 2824-based movement it comes with, and it digs up into the wrist if not on a NATO strap (which is how I intended to wear it, so that's not too much of an issue for me).

Excellent commentary. I own a 2019 Submariner and I love my Tudor BB58 blue not because it’s like a Sub but because it’s has its own identity. I find it to be nearly the exact same size as my 5 digit reference Rolex models. I also agree the Pelagos FXD is the most pure tool expression of Tudor divers and need to add one to the collection! I like Tudor for being different than Rolex not just a cheaper version.

I feel the same way about the Pelagos 39. it‘s just looks more like the tool watch that a Sub used to be and what it might have become. Perhaps even more so if it had a flat dial like the Pelagos. Edit: i think my friend‘s P39 looks and feels amazing, but I know that I‘m getting the blue MN FXD instead (or first😄). That’s the one for me.

My favorite modern Tudor is the Pelagos 39. I just love it on wrist. Worn & Wound posted a great video comparing the 14060M Rolex Submariner to the P39 and found the Sub to be 39.4mm in diameter, while the P39 is 39.6mm. I think maybe that slightly larger than 39mm size (with the bezel sticking out a tiny bit) is why it wears so well, yet does not feel diminutive even on my just over 7 inch wrist. The only thing I would love more is if they had a date version and if they had a blue option. My favorite vintage Tudor is the blue snowflake Submariner, without a doubt. The prices of those now are eye watering though.

I agree completely with your statement, buy a Tudor BB because you want a Tudor BB. I own the black and gilt 58 and adore it. I feel it might just be the ultimate vintage inspired diver (for me) and find the dial incredibly beautiful, the build quality exceptional, and the movement super reliable and accurate. I've swapped it to the new ranger bracelet with Tfit clasp and it's spectacular. I don't see it as a sub or wish it was a sub, I just see a beautiful warm tone dive watch with exceptional build quality.

That’s a pretty cool idea, it also does away with the faux rivets. I didn’t know the ranger and 58 bracelet were interchangeable. Can you buy just the bracelet and how much does it cost (approximately)? Tudor really should upgrade their 58 lineup with the T-Fit.

I have a super case Sub, 58 and 54. When I tried on the 54 I was sort of blown away and had to have it. I love it, but it is a Tudor and it's own watch, which is why I got it. In hindsight I would maybe of preferred the new 41 on jubilee, but at the time the 54 had me and I still love it so no regrets, I may get the 41 eventually or may not, no rush. I would say I was influenced at the time by the Zenith Defy classic 37 mm which I had just got. One regret I do have is selling my FXD, first generation, I miss that, but I will no doubt get one of those again. Great up as usual TGV!

TGV bravo well said. My favorite is your Tudor. It would be my favorite if it were mine for sure. I’m jealous of you for having the foresight to own the version I’d own for sure. My BB41 still sits in its box w for me to sell it on to someone else who can enjoy it’s slab sided case and fake patina dial. Honestly I prefer my modded Seiko Submariner I built myself complete with the domed acrylic glass and holes case with hollow end link aftermarket oyster bracelet. The dial say Seiko Automatic. 200m 660ft Submariner. Japan movement. And yes it has a NH38 no date movement to make it so it doesn’t have a ghost date position. It keeps time within 5 to 6 seconds a day after some regulation and while having faux patina on the dial it still glows nicely with Luminova all this cost me about 104 bucks to put together myself and I am happy. I love it and if it were stolen. Who cares I can simply build another one for 100 bucks. I guess this is why I consider myself a watch enthusiast rather than a collector anymore. I don’t need to buy that latest edition of the Black Bay to have a blast with my watches even if it’s just an homage I built myself. Cheers brother. Love these thoughtful videos.

A vintage Tudor sub over a modern Rolex sub a 100 times over! The Tudor no date sub would be my dream watch but a 79090 like yours I would not turn away lol. If I were intentionally going in harms way, one of the early Pelagos with the ETA movement and 500 meters of water resistance would be my first choice. Another outstanding presentation as always! I watched this video a couple times since it came out. And because of it I kind of stayed away from the BB54. But since the BB58 GMT came out, I do have a completely different perspective. GMT is my preferred complication in absolute, but when looking for a diver to complete my collection of Chrono-Complication/Dress-Diver I decided for the BB54. It is in essence a less rugged diver, but still a diver. And it is very much similar to the 58 GMT. They are a perfect couple IMO. And, long live the desk divers!

My blue bay 58 has been my only daily wear for three years and I still love it. It’s a modern watch with its sapphire, movement and design elements in a distinctly unique package. It’s not vintage. I think trying to think of it as vintage is a mistake rather than just to take its design at face value. And trying to think of it as a sub substitute is also a mistake. It’s a blue modern dive watch that can stretch from a t-shirt to a suit, especially a blue suit. The coin edge and thickness help it move away from tool watch just a smidge more than the Sub, and thus a better all around daily wear. It’s not a Rolex, the snowflake hand will not let you mistake it for one. And being free of the Rolex stigma but still getting a similar design philosophy is great. Mine is still keeping great time. It’s my one watch, my companion.

When starting this video, I said to myself: he's going to recommend buying a vintage Tudor sub! 😆 For the record, I've owned 3 versions of the Black Bay, including the 58 and GMT currently. My favorite is the pepsi GMT, with the top reason being that it's a "true" gmt and makes an excellent travel watch. I recently went on an international trip, and I brought 3 other watches with me, but the gmt stayed on my wrist 90% of the time. It was great for everything from snorkeling and exploring to visiting a somewhat nice restaurant. For reference I'm 6'5" tall and of a sturdy build, so the case size and slab sides don't really have the impact on my 7.5" wrist that they impart elsewhere. Great video as always, Prost!

I’d get nearly any Tudor diver, but the only Rolex diver that interests me are the older references. Love those classic proportions. Also whenever you do these videos I’m tempted to throw on my Pro Diver 😅

I LOVE the "They Live" reference. I own a Pelagos with the ETA movement and really enjoy it. I wouldn't mind a Tudor Submariner one of these days.

Hi Buddy! Such a beautifully put together video. I had two BB58'S. Eventually sold them as I later thought I may have been caught up in that current hype maybe. Settled down to a two piece collection, a MM300 Seiko and my grail Planet Ocean. Love to pick up your Tudor oneday, such a perfect balance.

I love your collection, pure class my friend. The best of Japan and the Swiss in 2 watches. Enjoy and thank you for sharing that, I envy such focus and clarity. Maybe a 3rd dress Tudor would be a killer option. Best regards, TGV

@@theurbangentry Thankyou for your kind words! I did have a bigger collection but had to sell due to a work injury incurred in March this year. I think I held on to my favourite pieces there. Thanks again.

great Video! I had my eye on an BB58 for quite some time. I recently purchased my first Tudor! Biggest watch purchase I have ever made. But It was not a diver, It was a new Smooth bezel Blackbay 41 with the new Jubilee style bracelet with the tfit clasp. To me slimmer case and lack of dive bezel fixed all the qualms i had with the BB divers. In my mind its like a date just without the date but the iconic snowflake hands.

Thanks, I’ve just subscribed and hit the ‘all notification bell icon.’I really enjoyed the upload. If Only Tudor brought out a new Black Bay model but with a Crown defender ahh I think they’d be onto a definite winner. Hello Tudor…. Hello?🤞

I think the Pelagos FXD totally rocks. I have the blue Marine Nationale one myself. It's the closest thing to a genuine "tool watch" which is still being made today, IMO, and it makes a great watch for weekend casual wear. I don't think it's meant to be Tudor version of "a Submariner". It might have some DNA from a Submariner, but I'd say it has DNA from a Sea-Dweller and a titanium Yachtmaster too. It is its own thing.

Pretty sure I won’t be able to add a Tudor or Rolex to my collection anytime soon, but I will watch TGV talk about a watch that comes in a cereal box which will undoubtably be accompanied by an excellent history lesson on cereals. Thanks as always.

A masterpiece, this video is top quality and on point. Pelagos do stand apart but don’t dress up as well as a Sub can and are likely flipped more often.

Great stuff as always! Hot take to add into the debate… Of all of the tudor’s I’ve experienced the one that give me the closest Submariner vibe is the one I own… The P01!!! Case wise it’s nothing alike, yet with the dial, crystal and design of ergonomics of the bezel somehow there genuinely feels like a sub is trapped in the steel waiting to be carved out lol

As always another great video. I agree with you TGV, don't buy one watch to get the vibes from another watch. I tried on the BB58 and loved it, never once thinking of a Rolex Sub, I knew what I was trying on and accepted it for what it truly is. Maybe on day I'll get a BB58, you certainly could wear worse !?!

TGV great channel as always. I love my Pelagos and the only reason I do love it is because it’s not a submariner. it’s it’s own thing. Does it have a few cues from the past? Sure. it’s not why I purchased it though. You may have many subscribers that purchase Tudors for that reason and that’s fine. Wilsdorf made it so more than the likes of any homage from any other brand. I love Tudor more than a Rolex simply because of who they became. Cheers bro

Awesome video TGV, really enjoyed it. . To me the Pelagos is the natural sucesor to the Tudor Sub, its where evolution has taken it, rather than the throwback BB models that want to recreate the past.

John Carpenter’s “They Live” is very under-appreciated and the use of black and white as the sunglass effect is a novel and inexpensive effect that works. Film seems as timely today as it did during the days of Reagonomics, too. I wish Tudor would release a smaller Pelagos FXD - their jacquard straps are offer a lot more depth than a printed strap.

Enjoying my BB58 925, acquired it last month. Wearing it as I type this…if you’re on the fence re: the 58. Be not afraid, it’s great. (NB - also a Hulk owner.) the 925 was just special enough to get me to buy a Tudor. 🤘🏻
