One of my friends expected I'd want a 4runner since I previously owned small sedans, Subarus and a Jeep Liberty. But i picked the Tacoma. I wanted a bed to put in mountain bikes, camping gear and coolers plus I tow a pop up. I did get a Double cab even though I'm a single guy. I know the back seat isn't the most roomy but it's better than the jump seats in the access cab for extra occasional passangers and gives me a little more inside space to lock things in.

I'm 5ft 11 also and I hit my knees on the bottom of the steering wheel when I get in, also had to duck to get into it. The 4Runner/Tacoma's are better if you are under 5f 10" tall. I couldn't get used to the 4Runner's cramped space, so I sold it. The Tacoma was about the same amount of space as the 4Runner. The 3.5L in the Tacoma is peppy. Vehicles assembled in Japan are very rare thing in the U.S.A...I think it does make a difference in respect to longevity. With that, I have to go 4Runner. I also like the engine and interior better. But there are several times this year when I definitely could've used a truck bed and my 4Runner wouldn't quite have enough space. I will say that I'm a little disappointed in the softness of the paint and the interior plastics used on the 5th Gens. My 4th Gen was better in regards to that.

I have both current models & for my applications I say the Tacoma with a slight edge. More useful mods IMO, better MPGs (not that i care), more HP & torque with OV Tune (no tune for the 4Runner), i can throw wet surf gear or anything wet in the back of the Tacoma without worry or cleaning up (I actually use the bed). Don't get me wrong I really like the 4Runner. But I'd give the Tacoma a slight edge. Waiting for the new Tundra to see what Toyota brings to the table 🤙🏼

If the 4Runner feels a little lazy it because it set for the best gas mileage. You can add a power booster like the "Sprint booster", or others. These are electronic devices that changes the engine timing and the transmission timing, and it take literally five minutes to install. They cost about $300 and they make a huge difference without shortening the life of either.

I’ve spent the last year and some months saving for a new vehicle . At first I took to Facebook marketplace to look at old Chevy s10’s & old Ford rangers. Then I looked more into reliability. Which led me to looking into Toyota’s. I also work with vehicles, so I’ve seen that Toyota’s have truly been one of the vehicles I see with much less problems . I went back and forth between Tacoma’s and 4runners from 2000-2008 . All this time later I’ve got a 2018 Tacoma . Although, I don’t think I would’ve minded if I had found a 4Runner with a better price

FYI the "proper" distance from the steering wheel is having your wrist rest on the top of the steering wheel. You are nowhere near that, and your arms are straight in the 4runner when you held the 3 and 9. So if you move your seat forward in the Tacoma, you can sit in the back with a lot more knee space. But Tacoma is the only option for me, manual transmission.

I'm shopping for a 2008-ish 4Runner with little frame corrosion. Just an FYI, although the 4Runner does offer 3rd row seating, it is not offered on the TRD Pro package. It is mostly found in the limited package.

I’m trading in my 20 Trd pro 4r for the 22 trd pro Tacoma when they come out. Love the 4r but we have the pro and a trd off road. So I’m going to get a truck. I have no family or anything so mostly just me.

I think everyone that either bought the 4 runner or Tacoma went through that which one should I really get phase between these two. Lol I got the 4runner and my deciding factor was the back space where I can put my dogs when traveling. I thought about a camper shell for the tacoma but I needed AC for my dogs and that wouldn’t work with the camper shell. Also, I can always get a utility trailer and pull that whenever I need it than having a bed all the time.

My exact reasons for choosing the 4runner over the Tacoma! I just hook up my utility trailer when needing to haul things. The standard 5 ft bed of the Tacoma doesn't haul much to begin with anyway!

Nice review. I was surprised to find out you live in Florida. I cannot imagine the need for these monster 4 x 4‘s in Florida? Do you have a review comparing the Land Cruiser with these?

The difference between this Tacoma and TRD 4Runner is like the difference between the SR5 4Runner and Limited 4Runner. You should do a review on those.

@@TRDJon The full-time 4x4 on Limited is very different compared to the part-time 4x4 on SR5. The Limited have the Torsen.

I want a 4runner with the manual gearbox from Tacoma. I guess we don't get all the things we want in life.

Just a tip, if you are getting the taco get them manual because of the auto having "slow shifting, not shifting" weird problems like that. Toyota will fix it with a recall but just beware.

So for a tactical application vehicle 4runner would be the best Choice for a civilian prepper?

My favorite are the dumb dumbs that buy a tacoma and put a cab/overland rack on it. If you wanted it to be an SUV why not just buy the 4runner?
