*Sarah,* We all know that the 4Runner is based on the Hilux pickup truck with a fiberglass camper shell over the shortbed. After nearly a decade of fiberglass tops, I learned during Toyota sales training, Toyota decided that for the 2nd generation they would simply stretch the metal skin all the way back. Here's the fun part. While in the designed process the new 4X4 SUV was named...wait for it... the "Fourskin". That is, until someone with a better English vocabulary stepped in and explained why that name might be problematic. That's right folks. We might all have been driving in or near a *"Toyota Fourskin".* That gives a whole new angle on the slogan _"Oh, What a feeling!"_ Toyota!

It's perfect and the fact that it stays kind of old school with the drivetrain and tech is a big plus for me.

Thank you for this review. I have been waiting for the TRAIL EDITION for some time now. They seem to magically disappear from the dealership on arrival. For all of the whiney complaints about creature comforts and upgrades like engine stop/start, lockers, heated seats and steering wheel, etc. Sarah said at the beginning that this is a basic trail truck. For those wanting to have bragging rights to frills that are rarely if ever used, this model is NOT for you. You can spend the extra $3000 to $8000 and get the Off-Road Premium, the Venture, and TRD PRO. This is a perfect vehicle for the weekend camper or off-roader since it comes with AT tires, roof rails and cargo basket, cooler (too big), and the sliding cargo tray (eliminates the elevation and space between the cargo area and the folded passenger seats) that makes sleeping in the back level. Nothing to add. Ready to hit the trails right out of the box. Problem is finding one, since only 4000 will be sent to the U.S.

For me, only a couple issues with this vehicle: 1) No manual transmission 2) $40K starting price for this "cheap" version. It seems crazy that money doesn't at least get you heated seats, though with them being cloth they wouldn't be real cold in the Winter (unless you live in Alaska or Siberia 😁). Those big HVAC knobs would be great for the North since you can work them with heavy gloves on. I'm definitely ok with the relative lack of "high tech", since that stuff's just going to break if you actually take this out on a trail anyway. And it's great that they still have that bullet-proof V6, AND you still twist a key to start it! Great review, though being in New England I take exception to 40F being "freezing cold" 😜

I like the fact that it's OLD SCHOOL. Old engine, old transmission, 300,000 miles and it's barely broken in. Chunky dials for your air controls, too. I bought my 2020 when I was 34, and as long as I'm able to get gas for it, I wonder if it's going to outlive me. It'll be close, but it just might do it. One day I will add a rear locker to my SR5. I just rented the TRD 4Runner and drove it to Colorado, over 1000 miles. It works perfect in that climate, but the seat is uncomfortable as all get out. It really needs a wiper on the rear window. @factbasedopinions8003 жыл бұрын
I believe this will satisfy a market of enthusiast off-roaders like myself. When building an off-road rig, you don't want to buy the "best" off-the-shelf vehicle. You are going to put a solid axle on it, steel bumper and wheels, a wench rated specifically for your needs. Why pay for the premium trim when you are going to pull half of it off anyways? There is such a large aftermarket following for Toyota and Jeeps that you are going to wire your own auxiliary switches in those blank switches. Those blanks, at least for me and some of my off-road friends, are "potential" switches for whatever we need (especially the overlanders) and helps keep the cabin clean. I personally think that this is not just a great entry rig, but also the preferred platform to get started on a newer build. If you are are swapping out your axles, lifting, putting tires over 35", this is a better rig than the TRD Pro. And it is capable enough to have fun on the weekends in-between the upgrade projects. TRD models are probably better options if you want the capability but want to stay stock. I think in the next 6 months, you'll see more of these off-roading (built rigs) than the TRD models. Just my point of view.

So I bought one, mine came with the TRD skid plate, predator step bar and the Nitto Grappler tires. In fact when I saw it on-line I thought it was either a TRD Off-Road or a Venture. It wasn't until I got the price from the dealer I realized it was the Trail because I got it for $38K.

I've got a 2007 Hilux with the same engine, it really is one of Toyota's best efforts. There's a company over here that develops supercharger kits for it, they have a test mule with more than 500hp that has been running without issue for over ten years. Unfortunately Toyota Australia dropped the engine in 2017, because everyone wants common fail diesels
