If you’re joining the military, I highly recommend you enrolled in HS JROTC. I taught Army HS JROTC for 25.5 years. My HS cadets who joined the military were more successful than non cadets who never enrolled in HS JROTC during HS. On day one of being a service member, you should think about improving yourself as a person and soldier. The military is no different from any other non military organization. Don’t join the military to drink your life away or do nothing during your off time. You don’t join to relinquish your total life to the military. You can attend college at night, participate in off base activities. Also, you must manage your military career yourself. My assignments were not all in a line unit for 20 years. I had a total of 15 different assignments during my 20 year career. After 10 years in the military, the military was like a hobby for me. Plus, as a senior NCO, I did not believe in having my soldiers doing dumb shyt.

HS JROTC it taught to such a low academic level It makes more sense to study and be active in other things in high school. Most people I trained with in the army from JROTC were not very smart and did not do well. Lots of PT failures. The military is very different from other organizations. You don't have much control over your career in the military. One of the problems is the postings you mentioned. You cannot get very good at any of those jobs when you move so often. Its kind of hard to do off base activities during war. Also most military towns suck.

@@Donner906 It’s not the JROTC program’s fault that former HS cadets fail their active duty fitness test. Oh hell no, the problem is the squad/platoon’s NCO leadership problem. I have former cadets who joined every branch of the US Military as enlisted and officers. Also, many of my cadets are teachers, principals, police officers, DOD; medical; MD’s, farmers, truck drivers, politicians just to name a few. Attention young man, the military is the military no matter what year in our Lord we’re operating in as a soldier. The regiment of military duty will always be part of a soldier’s life no part of the era. Hey soldier, a go getter makes it happen under all circumstances. Yes sir, 30 years ago, I too was stationed at army bases that were considered boring duty stations. I believe most of all army forts are near college campuses. At Ease soldier, the college campuses are a very good place where soldier can meet a college student. The worst thing a single soldier can do is stay in the barracks and depressed himself to death. A GI is a unique person when it comes to fighting, training, socializing and surviving in combat and as well as non combat environments. You must lean forward, stand up in your foxhole, lead from the front, and never freaking quit in this thing known as life. When I was a single soldier stationed in Germany, Korea, and in the Deep South Army Forts, I enjoyed my off duty time in the surrounding areas and spending long weekends in major cities of the USA to include major cities in Europe and South Korea. All of my duty assignments were at the tip of the spear and, such duty would make a half stepping soldier to tap out or hang in there and start soldiering like a good soldier should. Hooah! Take care and be successful in the military and life. Thank you for your dedicated service!

@@timothygibbs7351 That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. College campuses where? Most bases are in crappy areas, except for the Navy. Lean forward, stand up in the fox hole? 6:30 It is true you have a 8 year commitment. You can be stop lossed and forced to stay in when you are on active duty. After you get off active duty, and you are In the IRR you can ignore the call up with no consequences. You are out of the military. I got IRR orders in December 2006. There were wars is Afghanistan and Iraq, they were calling me up for the troop surge. I did exactly what you did at 8:20. The IRR sent threatening letters and made threatening phone calls, but they didn't do anything. I got orders to report for a hearing on my case, and ignored those too. I kept all my VA benefits. You can safely ignore IRR orders. When you get called up in the IRR they will often force you to do a different MOS than the one you did in the active army. I knew people that laid cable, that were reclassed to MPs, and did nothing but escort convoys in Iraq. All the more reason to ignore the IRR. No solder has ever been subject to UCMJ for refusing to mobilize in the IRR.

To your reference of contracts I don't know if it is still true today, you do somewhat allude to it, but when I enlisted in the early 80s the guarantee was only for the MOS training and not necessarily the ability to assume that position once reaching your unit assignment. I signed up for 67N, Utility Helicopter Repair, at the time the UH-1x. Got to my first unit and was put on a maintenance team, worked up to team leader, then crew chief. Got shipped to Korea and knew I wouldn't get a crew slot right away. However, the unit I ended up in had just fully transitioned to the UH-60 and was full up with Blackhawk mechanics. Yup, I was put in 'another' position without even an offer of OJT for the Blackhawk or to work on an AH-1(which is very similar to a UH-1) maintenance team. That was with a spotless record and years of experience. Good stuff, videos like this should be recommended by recruiters.

Just because it is in your contract, you are not protected. I served in the Navy from the early to mid 70s when the Variable Reenlistment Bonus was discontinued and replaced with a far worse Selective Reimbursement Bonus. VRB was the main way the Navy got recruits to sign 6 year contracts in exchange for making E4 out of C school. Several active duty sailors sued to have their contracts enforced but the courts ultimately decided that the government can’t be held liable.
