I watched an overview of the i think the 1st 2 books tonight and the general vibe I took away is this is not on par with good science fiction, maybe i'm wrong, but .... ok, so why...did the original ruse pay off? where the guy sent out the signal to have a far off planet star system destroyed? when it was so obviously a ruse? ...but we're dealing with highly advanced aliens? and for that matter, how did earth even become aware of the location of the malicious civilization so they could ensure mutual destruction? ... it's not passing the sniff test for me, idk

I've read the part where that ruse you mention is revealed and the explanation is basically what I figured it would be the moment I read the prologue. I won't re-explain it but you can probably search of "dark forest theory" and read it cus it just regurgitates that at the reader. Which to your point, why would a civilization so advanced not be able to detect life worth destroying before engaging in such a risky maneuver to reveal themselves BY engaging in an attack, as per the dark forest theory. The book becomes entertaining about 230 pages in, but the first 230 pages could have been 50 pages and been twice as good.

Yeah half the interactions in the book involve character smoking indoors so the humans have already forfeited their right to Earth as far as I'm concerned.
