Great tour. I too turned our empty nest bedroom into pantry space, and yes, I also have a folding chair in mine, as well as my back yard umbrella and emergency supplies. I make so many trips to this room that I automatically go there sometimes without even meaning to. I can easily make that trip in the dark. A few grab-n-go items in there will save me time in a pinch.

We also like to use masking tape labels on our buckets as it is nice to be able to change the label and use the bucket for a different type of food in the future. The gamma lids are also a very useful addition to allow people with weaker hands to still open and close the 5 gallon buckets.

@@vano4375 if you’re storing something like flour, it’s shelf-life is only about 8 months. Be sure to freeze it for 2 weeks to kill weevil eggs, so you don’t end up with weevils in your flour. Also, be sure you’re working through that flour if you’re not storing long-term.

How long will the rice stay in the buckets that have the gamma seals without the bags? Our friends bought some rice for us and kept in their freezer for at least a couple of months and then they needed the freezer space so we had to get it from them and put it in buckets but I don't have them in mylar bags

@heidirexin51412 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Mine don't have zippers, but to hasten things along once I open the oxygen absorbers, I'm thinking I can fill the bags and then heat seal along all the tops, except for a corner big enough to slip the absorbers in, and then do the final heat sealing of those corners. Does that sound reasonable?

@@ToniReneeAtHome Thank you for the tutorial. I have been unsure about what to do with the mylar bags. Stupidly, perhaps, I tried the vacuum sealer on them and found out right away that they won't seal by that method. lol. Now I know what to do. I love the idea of the food bags inside the food buckets. Another idea might be to use the food bags inside a cheaper 5 gallon bucket and put the mylar bags inside of that - either one large one or a number of smaller ones. I have to do some price comparison, but I'm assuming the other buckets are significantly cheaper.
@ToniReneeAtHome2 жыл бұрын
@@patriciacz8622 they are cheaper. My reason for not using regular buckets is bc, once they’re empty, I might not want to use them the same way. I don’t want to have to keep track of food grade vs non-food grade. Having one kind is easier. But you do what works best for you. Your way absolutely works.

If the buckets are food grade and the lid has a gasket, is the Mylar necessary?
@ToniReneeAtHome2 жыл бұрын
If you want to store it long-term, yes. If you are going to be working through it, no. The Mylar and oxygen absorbers keep out air and bugs. The buckets alone can’t do that.

Yaaaay 🙌🏻
@Pmwalls462 жыл бұрын
@Denise James A flat iron would work better because it is flat. A regular curling iron is rounded so may be more difficult. You can even use a regular iron you would use for clothing (on a hot setting) and with the steam feature turned OFF !! You wouldn’t want any moisture affecting the sealing process. You can place a 2 x 4 on the table and place the top seam of the bag flat against the wood to be able to use a regular iron. Hope this helps. 😊

@ToniReneeAtHome2 жыл бұрын
Even if this is true, I have my stuff stored in sealed Mylar bags. The buckets are just extra protection from mice. Mice can chew through Mylar. So even if the buckets do leak air, the air can’t get through the Mylar. The stuff I am working through is in plastic bags. Again, air is not an issue. I think I will work on a new/updated video tomorrow. I keep getting questions. I’ll address them. Thank you for asking. I hope this helps. Watch for the video 😊

I started getting half gallon mylar bags with the thought that if I open a 5gal and think I won't be able ot use all of it before spoil then I'll parse it out into the smaller bags & those bags will go back in the bucket after the spot in the cupboard for that resource is full.
