Very informative and well explained. I didn't realize that wireless mics would not work with float! That is really good to know. I enjoy the content! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! It's been a lovely addition to our tool kits, but I routinely see it over-estimated. I had to ask a lot of questions along the way or learn things the hard way, but I hope people can start to embrace it where they can. Thanks for the happy comment!

This is a great video for anyone looking to get a understanding how how 32 bit float works. I tried to make my version of it but I couldn't find the best wording to make it coherent. The best way that I use it, as an audio recordist/Boom operator, is getting my levels as close as I can to -6 to -12db and then I can focus on my mic placement. This helps when there's background noise that needs to be blocked out by moving the mic. When I had to do all of that and focus on feathering that's where I found myself struggling. I always wanted to have a boom op and audio supervisor tandem to work together, like a camera op and a focus puller. But now that this is around I don't need the extra person to help. Thanks for this Shaun!

Me, too! I've had a ton of logos made over the past few years, that one is still my favorite. :-) Thanks for your design!

Very informative video. Now I’ll stop saying it’s like “raw” audio when explaining it to people lol. Great job!

Thanks! You've got an F3? I'm thinking about swapping my F6 for the F3...

@@ShaunHautly yes I have the f3. If you want to test it out just let me know and it’s yours!

Thanks for the info. I had no idea about the wireless even of its obvious.

Yeah, it made sense to me, but I bought my first system assuming it would work. Oh well, we keep learning!

Can somebody point me to the videos where Shaun talks about mic choice? I'm curious what he means by "a shotgun mic is not usually the best option for recording audio"

In other words, a 32bit float file is ghost compressed audio with infinite backups of different volume levels.
@ShaunHautly2 жыл бұрын
I like that. Yeah. But not INFINITE backups, only about 1400. That's it. :-P
@NeonKue2 жыл бұрын
@@ShaunHautly I’ll consider it “infinite” until they make a 48bit or a ridiculous sound system that can reach those ghost levels lol

Hello Shaun, Thanks for such a detailed video and I subscribed to you after listening to your principals in podcast video. I really appreciate people with strong moral values & composed mind :-) This video is very helpful. I wanted to get a recorder + mic combo for a run & gun documentary style travel filmmaking. I have shortlisted Zoom F1 + Shotgun combo, what do you think about it? I really don't need 32 bit floating. What's your opinion about Zoom F1 + Shotgun combo? What mic you would recommend for a professional audio for my purpose in the same budget? Regards

It JUST came out and I haven't tested it, but Zoom just released the M3. It's an on-camera shotgun mic with a built in 32-float recorder. If it works as advertised (and Zoom's stuff if pretty good), it might be a perfect little tool. zoomcorp.com/en/us/mictrak-recorders/mictrak-recorders/m3-mictrak/
