Funny story with Buster, was walking with me mate and toddling daughter through Bournemouth square and I saw she had stopped and was talking to this old couple, my daughter thoroughly charmed the pants off of both and she kept saying to me "Dad Dad its uncle Albert" and blow me it actually was and what a nice bloke he was, gave my daughter 50p too and she didn't want to spend it because it was from him. She actually cried when his passing was announced and even said a nice prayer to me mum who had passed not so long before and told her she was very sad Albert had died. She gets all embarrassed when I recount the memory to her as she's all grown up now lol

Only Fools Fans might like to read about this little experience I had when I was a student in London, about 1981. I used to live in South Kensington, near my university and one day I was walking along Knightsbridge, past the NatWest bank there. At the time I didn't have a TV and hadn't yet watched Only Fools. Any way as I passed I saw none other than David Jason on the other side of the road, (who was already very famous from children's TV and the odd adult comedy), standing outside the bank as if about to enter. What struck me was his strange attire and behaviour, he was wearing a flat cap, tan leather jacket, and shades. He sort of stood on the spot, turned his collar up and shrugged his shoulders. He then strode purposefully into the bank. I was struck by how he looked and behaved and was a bit surprised. Later during holidays I watched my first episode of Only Fools and realised that he had been in character as Del Boy, perhaps developing or practicing his character in public.

Gary Linekar and the cast of Only Fools will be freelance, which is to say they can undertake other work as well as their BBC work, and hence can do advertisements (though there will surely be some clause to say they can't bring the reputation of their BBC work into disrepute during their other work). With Nick Knowles he must have been directly employed by the BBC with and exclusivity clause that prevented other work. He was also seeking to directly profit from the reputation of his BBC show, in much the same way as Hugh Scully was when he was sacked from the Antiques Roadshow years ago.

I suspect that pretty much every episode namechecked various commercial brands and/or had them physically in shot somewhere or other. The most notable example is one of the Xmas specials in 1996 where a whole segment of the episode made heavy use of specific brands of coffee and gravy.

A series inspired by the WH Smiths adverts would have been an absolute riot. 😂 Nicholas could have pulled it off though, he's a great, underrated actor. I only vaguely remember those WH Smith ones, the Seely one and the cupasoup one for some reason. The rest are either regional ads or weren't shown long enough to be remembered. I suspect the one where they're actually playing the parts of their characters from OFAH wasn't a British one. Otherwise, the Beeb would have had something to say about it.

Back before 1990, it was usually BBC stars who appeared in most adverts on ITV and later Channel 4. This was down to a very old rule from the 1950s when ITV started which said stars associated with big ITV shows could not benefit from doing commercials on ITV. This led to BBC stars instead appearing in commercials. Such as Morecambe and Wise, Two Ronnies, Only Fools cast etc. That all changed with the 1990 Broadcasting Act when that rule was finally abolished.
@OnlyFoolsHorses

@johnking5174
@johnking5174 Жыл бұрын
@@OnlyFoolsHorses Hi, yes I didn't know, until I came across an article on the Transdiffusion website, a website which is all about the history of broadcasting. The original Independent Television Authority felt that big stars of ITV were already paid a lot more than what the BBC could offer, so that big salary was their incentive for not being able to do adverts on ITV. The authority felt if too many adverts were all ITV stars, it could lead to the government thinking ITV was going the same path as the American stations, "crass commercialism" and so the restriction was laid down. So BBC stars who earned a lot less for working at the BBC, got paid a lot more for adverts. So, for the ITA and the government, a balance was created. All of that was thrown into the dustbin by Margaret Thatcher come early 1990 and her broadcasting act.
