While Arthur was a bad dad I do love him as a character and the exploration of how, sometimes an abusive parent will still be good to their grandkids, and how that can be emotionally painful and confusing to the parent of the grandkid. One of my favorite episodes of the show, for sure

Arthur is probably one of the best depictions I’ve ever seen of the “grandparent effect.” People may be horrible parents, but as they grow and mature into older age they settle down and realize their mistakes, leading to much better grandparents. We can see how Arthur, while still being a little bit shitty, is wiser and kinder to Orel.

Clay hates him ALOT it was foreshadowed before this episode and before we got his backstory too in subtle moments. Orel: "Dad, dad!" Clay in a resentful voice: "Where" (this was when he didn't know who Shapey's father was but it could also be in reference to his own hatred of his father). Clay: "Orel! A father never gives up then he would just be a husband and that's practically worthless" he's subtly calling his own dad worthless because he gave up being his father. Clay: " We have a finite amount of love in us..." This also applies to his father. I also think there was a throwaway line where Bloberta mentions the word "Grandfather" and it upsets Clay making him roll his eyes .

He had time to reflect and regret his actions towards Clay. One could even see his chosen isolation as a form of penance. He never reached out to Clay to say he was sorry, because he wasn't. Arthur wasn't a good father to Clay, but it wasn't completely his fault. Clay's mother had a very negative influence on him. Arthur could have tried to set him straight, but there was too much anger and grief and the fact that Clay takes more after his mother even though he's actually quite intelligent enough to become mayor at such a young age speaks volumes of how it was most likely going to play out. You don't see writing like this in most adult cartoons.

Isn’t Arthur the reason why Clay is a jerk to his son All because Clay accidentally killed his mother?
@sentry3019 Жыл бұрын
More than that, he’s got way more issues than his dad being abusive. Tbf he pretty much got his mom killed and due to her having so many miscarriages she gave Clay all of the attention on top of being super religious making Clay pretty spoiled and messed up so Arthur blamed Clay for his mom’s death and hit him making Clay think that’s how he shows affection when in reality he was just mad at Clay. All of what happened is never an excuse to hit your kid but you can see where both are coming from at least in a way even if you don’t agree with their decisions
