Just FYI: around the 1:21:00 mark Monique spends reputation for money but forgets to flip the tile from a 6 to a 5, she then spends reputation again and goes from 6 to 5 - but it should've been a 4 here.

Monique did not flip to 5 at 1:21:09 when she spent down so she has 1 less prestige. When spending down again, she would have gone down to 4 at 1:22:04. She should have ended up at 6 at 1:22:23. She would have been at 4 at 1:28:25 after refreshing servants. She should have gone up to 5 at 1:28:42. This resulted in her having a 5 at the end of the game, resulting in 6 less total points giving her 151 total for the game. So Naveen won 158-151.

Glad you are giving Obsession more attention. This game needs more copies out there because I’m sure it’ll get more fans as people play it. It’s a real gem. My wife’s favorite game mode is the extended game, all the expansions in there, all promo cards, no promo tiles (yet), Dickens variant. We don’t play with the Queen Victoria variant like, you mostly because we forget to shift the tiles. I wonder if that variant makes the Useful Man less useful as it looks like you both didn’t grab as many sporting tiles as I usually see. Sporting tiles are very important to get your economy engine going unless you luck into an early American heiress (they are also -1 VP unless flipped). 1:40:00 There is no deluxe version, but the earlier printing (1st edition) did not have those tuck boxes. Dan has an explanation on how to store them on his channel and there are posts on BGG. 1:42:40 I heard at 4 players the game has a lot of downtime. I haven’t had a chance to play at that count due to COVID. I also haven’t played the mode that enables 5-6 players. 1:51:00 Being able to take the butler room action changes the value of some of the VP cards as they are easier to attain. I bet you can find the corresponding one from the expansion and put it it. I’ve never tried since I don’t want to mix my card sets.

Happy to see you tackle this lovely gem of a game. There is absolutely no reason to hire servants outside of passing when you are playing with the new passing rules from the expansion. This is even explicitly stated in the Upstairs, Downstairs rulebook. One of the fuzzy things in the game. A new mechansim that replaces an older one without actually replacing it, really. So, yeah, the rules allow for doing a thing in a suboptimal way but softly suggest not doing it that way. Ah, well. Love the game in spite of its little weird wrinkles. Wrinkles can be very charming.

Great video! Obsession has been one of our obsessions since the KS was delivered last year. It was fun watching Naveen sweat out the final score. Love that kind of passion. We are going to have to try the hall boy variant. I hate to say it because we love the game so much but the rulebook is a mess. It's a game that's been on my radar for quite some time because I have a friend who is obsessed with the Victorian era, so I know that she would love this game. The only problems is the availability and the price. However, after watching your playthrough it looks like it might be something I bite the bullet to buy. Those decisions look really meaty, as you said, towards wondering if you can manage to play the tiles and cards that you really want to play. Thanks for showing off this game with the expansions!

Love this playthrough. Two comments: 1: you didn’t really lean into the role playing vibe with reading the flavor text on the guests. I think it adds a lot to the game. 2: I think if Monique had taken one more reputation hit for an extra £100 it would have been a tie. However, Naveen still would have won because the first tiebreaker is the person who has a Fairchild card. Still SUPER tight. Really fun.

I have been lucky to get a copy in Europe recently, and unfortunately I have a boyfriend that kinda cares about theme :p It's why it has been so hard to get hem to play Rococo but I know he will like the mechanics because it's just such an interesting mix of mechanics. Fortunately Obsession has a great solo mode and I have been playing and trying out different modules so I can teach him the best version of the game. Your playthrough has really helped me, set-up, mistakes i made, best modules. I see why the designer recommended this setup to you. It's a bit of a weird beast, for you guys it may feel different because you play a lot of prototypes but this doens't feel like a "boardgame" to me. This is a passion project that has so many nooks and crannies because the designer wants to make it as appealing as possible. It isn't polished and it takes effort to get into (even if the game itself) isn't that hard. It's been really fun to play and I hope I can convey what I love about this game tomorrow because he has agreed to play it with me, yeaah :p :D

Quick clarifying question - at 1:21:05, should your rep have reduced to 5 since you went down to get coins? So your end of turn rep should only be 6? Update/question - I noticed reputation at the end doesn’t matter. Couldn’t you spend all of it for $$ and get 1vp per $200?

It’s a game that’s on my list but put off by the rule book being a novel. Not entirely hooked by the theme but it’s more unique than lots of other games. It would nice if you draw more on mechanics to see how everything flows and fits into the theme. I do like that you explain how mechanisms work and functionality of tiles and cards. Let us know what you don’t like more in these reviews. Lovely clear production and respectful couple.

Don't forget... You have to plan ahead....to capitalize on the special events. Time your event in a way that the servants and gentry maximize the event through the exact right tile. When it all comes together it feels so wonderful! The useful man is probably my favorite expansion meeple. I like how you both maximized the cooks! Man...think I am going to pull this out right now. Have you guys played the co-op mode or the estate mode?

Have you guys tried the extended version? I've seen online debates between standard game length and the extended side and would be curious which you find more compelling. Thanks for putting this up! We're getting Obsession tomorrow and I can't wait to play :)

@@hgbnkbggj2915 You're welcome! Yes, it's not too much but Dan mentioned that he plan a reprint in the spring. But considering the time of the manufacturing and how slow the shipping process nowadays I guess there won't be another shipment to Europe until next year. But that's just my guess. I preordered it on Games Lore on the first day it was possible. I really hope I get it. Fingers crossed!

Hmm super hard to tell, we absolutely fell in love with this game and will certainly be keeping it in our collection for a very long time. Check out the playthrough for a little bit to get the feel. Of course it's hard to see the dilemmas and decisions we have to make with the cards we in our hands... If you have any other questions feel free to email us.
