The most masculine voice in popular music, then and now!! One of my alltime favorites and sang some of the best songs of the day in the best way. Thank you to his family for sharing this clip and for those responsible for putting it on youtube.

Over on IMDB - there is different song information for this first episode (or incomplete information). When did the show end? Currently - the IMDB shows the 37th episode on June 26, 1951 ...
@vaughnmonroeshow51864 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question! The show was on from October 10, 1950 to June 26, 1951, and then again in the 1954-55 season. Unfortunately, very little of the original show still exists, though we do have some complete episodes including one donated from a private collector.

@@vaughnmonroeshow5186 I appreciate the follow-up. I have updated the IMDB entries for The Vaughn Monroe Show - although the CBS archive has the 1951 version of the show running until July 3, 1951 (guests were The Latin Quarter Dancing Girls). That would be the 39th episode of that series - which makes sense as many 1950s TV shows were sold in multiples of 13 episodes. If you have scripts for the episodes, I'd be fascinated to see them (and would help update IMDB with the script data)

I cannot imagine why anyone would want to smoke cigarettes while they make a living as a singer. I know a lot of do or did such as Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra. Of course, in 1950 cigarettes and cancer connection was not known.
@vaughnmonroeshow51864 күн бұрын
Even though Vaughn Monroe's show was sponsored by Camel Cigarettes for eight years, he was not much of a smoker himself, other than a pipe. Still, so many were smokers back then, something very hard to imagine in the 21st century!

Hard to understand that he started out as a trumpet player. Didn't he sing in the bathtub 🛁 or in the car 🚗?
@vaughnmonroeshow51864 күн бұрын
He did, but really was always involved as an instrumentalist and vocalist. He played lead trumpet on a number of "territory" bands during the 1930s, but also sang with them. While his first accolades while in High School (in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania) were for his trumpet playing, he was singing in Church choirs and glee clubs at the same time. Thanks for the note, and stay tuned on my forthcoming biography! www.vaughnmonroe.com

Beautiful voice but one semester of voice training and would have benefited with more....and no one complains ...highly trained singers will know the difference...such as not pushing the volume when moving to a higher note in the song.
@vaughnmonroeshow51864 күн бұрын
Interesting assessment. Monroe was actually far more trained than any other popular singers of the era. He studied for two years at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie-Mellon) but left his Sophmore year (1933) because it was the Depression and he could not afford tuition. As was very common in those days (1930s) he found steady work on territory bands - this is, in fact, greatest "training" in the world: playing one-nighters while traveling thousands of miles by bus on bad roads, staying in fleabag motels, and performing in all manner of venues before good microphones, sound systems, or air conditioning. He did complete two more semesters of vocal study at New England Conservatory (Boston) in 1935-1936 as well. This, of course followed by another 30 years of performing as vocalist, trumpet, trombone, bandleader, arranger, and composer. I'm not sure what further "training" would be necessary for a performer at the top of their game and peak popularity. Your reference to "pushing the volume" could be more related to the poor audio quality from a TV show in 1950 more so than the actual performance. Generally, Monroe's vocal style was rather relaxed, if very strong. He was not a dramatic baritone, but the richness of his sound carried more weight than his actual delivery which tended to be more subdued. I've heard many, many criticisms of Monroe's vocals (as did he!), but "untrained" is definitely a new one!! I hope I provided a little insight hear. Stay tuned - the biography is forthcoming!! www.vaughnmonroe.com
