This video is designed to get you thinking about your actual use of a rimfire rifle and what brand, calibre and scope you should consider. It is by no means an extensive list but I hope it helps you decide on the right setup for you.

Mate I just wanted so say a quick than you for all the effort you put into your videos. This Beginner series has been a great help to me as a new shooter trying to navigate the onerous licensing and permit system. When I say "new shooter" I'm referring to the whole licensing, registering and PTA thing. As a former ADF member I'm not exactly new to firearms, but it's been many years since we could pick up a used SKS out of the old trading post and go have a yippy shoot at the range. Your attitude and professionalism as shown in your content is doing wonders for the sport in my opinion. once again, thanks.

Excellent presentation as we have come to expect from our friend down under! I would only add that the Leupold "Freedom" series of scopes are near perfect for rim fire rifle use and affordable to boot! No frills and no "target" type turrets and such, just pure no nonsense hunting scopes... I have their 4-12 on a CZ 457 17 HMR and their 3-9 on a CZ 452 22 lr and they are about as perfectly suited to my needs in the field or the range as anything I can think of... There are scopes that would serve better for "precision" shooting, however prior to switching to the 3-9 on the 452, that rifle wore a 77 vintage Leupold M8 fixed 4x that easily produced many one hole groups at 55 yards! That's been enough "precision" for my needs but its time to stretch things out just for the fun of it and the 3-9 should help with accomplishing that! Thank you for always providing a well informed opinion and a well measured outlook along with a healthy dose of experience in your videos! They are quite enjoyable to watch...

great clear and honest advise. I have a 22 magnum and 223. 223 is running at a cost of around 85c/shot and the magnum 60c/shot. my 223 is my go to rifle for foxes on larger acreages and the rim on small acreage.

I'll be buying my first this year so thank you for all your info with the beginners series. I'm tossing up between the tiger american, Cz 455 and the Lithgow. If the Lithgow had open sights it wouldn't even be a question.
@ozziereviews
@ozziereviews 7 жыл бұрын
teatowel11 I believe they would have to lighten the Lithgow to make open sights useful but that's just my preference. Your choice will really come down to your main use, so that's where you need to be 100% honest with yourself and choose a rifle that suits what you will actually be doing ie, hunting, range, combination, shooting off hand, supported etc etc

Good general advice and some nice rifles also covered... I use a Browning T-Bolt Varmint .22LR and a Sako Quad with .22WMR Varmint Barrel... Both excellent rimfire rifles and very accurate at the appropriate ranges and will eat any ammo tried so far. The WMR loves the 30g Hornady, - 33g Remmington and 40g MaxiMag HP! I agree with your advice on the scopes too... 6 X fixed would be a great option!! Great Videos... Look forward to more!!

Another good video, lots of good common sense advice. A 22LR is a must have rifle, they are so popular for so many reasons. A scope option worth considering is the Leupold VX-1 2-7x33. Quality kit at a reasonable price, and not too heavy or bulky. Cheers!

Hi there. I'm just beginning my journey in my early 50s and getting my little lad shooting at the range. I've applied (here in NZ) for my Firearms License, have my gun safe installed, and sit my safety course in early May. We'll be looking at a .22 (Tikka T1X most likely) and doing range work and perhaps bunnies, and if we're 'into it' we'll go larger for 'up to deer' in maybe a year or so. Hopefully the next video on centrefire rifles will give me some guidance for that next step. Thank you so much for this video series, I'm learning a lot. Cheers.

Anschutz are great, but now you have to try out the Vudoo Gunworks rifle. It's taking over the 22LR precision shooting field. VERY expensive, but about the same price as a top-end Anschutz. And what sets it apart is that it is Remington 700 receiver compatible -- this means you can put in your favorite trigger (Timney, Jewel, Geiselle, Trigger Tech), change to any Rem700 stock or barrel if you like and mount a variety of rings and picatinny rails. Never underestimate the importance of that.

I looked at multiple rim fires and there is no substitute for going to the shop and seeing and handling the options. I settled on the CZ 453 set trigger with a var barrel. Have a Vortex diamond 4x16 scope (awesom scopes). Biggest contributor to consistent accuracy - picking the best ammo for the rifle after shooting 10 to 15 different brand/type rounds.

really informative video mate. i get what you are saying about the 17hmr and i still love mine but as you said very specific caliber mainly rabbits. but ok for head shots on foxes under 100m. just turns them to mush. im yet to even shoot a 22.mag but i dare say within the next 12 months it will be another one i add to my collection as i get more and more into fox shooting
@ozziereviews
@ozziereviews 7 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Hodges I think the ultimate rimfire fox round is this 17wsm however there are some outstanding 22mag rounds available, just depends on your need as you say and I agree, 100 yards or under on a head shot in a fox with a 17hmr, it'll certainly work :)
@cyclo360
@cyclo360 7 жыл бұрын
Mate , I agree with your choice of the .22WMR an excellent hunting round. I have a sako quad .22wmr and only a couple of weeks ago I shot a Rabbit through the head at 160yds. The longest on a rabbit so far is 180 yds and both shots are captured on my vids. The .22WMR has sadly taken an unfair back seat to the HMR, no doubt the HMR is an excellent round but as an all round hunting rimfire you really cant beat the ol WMR. A friend who was once ranked 3rd in the national benchrest shooting team has a HMR and he tells me that hes in two minds about this cal. One day he absolutely loves it the next he wants to smash his rifle (a CZ) against a tree. I have been shooting the WMR since 85 my first rifle was a superbly accurate Krico 352 deluxe, this rifle with Win super x would honestly put 5 into 1" at 100yds all day long , which was outstanding for a WMR back then. What we need to see, is the WMR loaded with a 40gn VMAX boat tail bullet , now that would be something and would seriously shake up the HMR when it comes to long range rabbit sniping. Anyway , a great vid and Im sure people just starting in the shooting sports will get a lot of good info from watching, cheers and atb, Sean
@ozziereviews
@ozziereviews 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Sean, yeah it has fond memories for me too... what I would love to see is a 22WSM and loaded with 40gr VMAX projectiles. That would really be the king of the rimfire world in my view. I am surprised that they haven't come out with it as the 17WSM (like all 17s) is severely limited with bullet weight. Even if they came out with a 204WSM loaded with a 40gr VMAX i'd be happy...

I’ve met a lot of guys over the years say their 22 magnums would shoot one hole groups. Lol I’ve never seen another shoot like mine. It is so consistent with anything from 30-45 grain ammo. The beauty of it is it only cost around $600 on clearance. I wouldn’t sell it for $5000

I personally hunt small game with 22lr subsonics (Winchester 40gr). I don't bother with any standard velocity 22lr because it's only 1,300 fps. It soon drops below transonic and accuracy suffers. High velocity 22.lr or hyper velocity will carry the round further. Step up I also use 22wsm, although the 22lr has more purpose. Here hornady V-max is just sooo good. Approaching 200m is possible but not beyond. I've lined up a biscuit tin at 250m and corrected for considerable drop, with rounds just hitting the tin all over the place. Not suitable for hunting. But plenty of fun non the less.

Good review. For a first time shooter there are a lot of cheaper options out there that are tack drivers. Would hate to see a prospective new shooter discouraged because someone told them a cheaper rifle was rubbish. They probably don't have the finish of the more expensive brands but are well worth it for the novice.

Yep, have heard good and bad about the old norinco. I have a Stevens 22wmr, cheap as chips but shoots like a laser. Haven't heard anything about the new Mosberg 22 but it looks pretty swish with its thumb hole pistol grip. I can see the design would attract a new shooter, and its under $400.

As for bolt-action rimfires, whatever happened to straight-pulls, such as the Browning T-bolt, ISSC SPA, or Steyr Scout RFR, or pump-actions, such as the Remington 572 or Henry Octagon? I can't think of any reasons not to go for them, except for cost and durability for the former, or the challenge of shooting from the prone position or putting the rifle on a physical support for the latter.

Hi There, liked the video thank you. I was looking at getting the 17 HMR then discovered the 17 WSM which based on balistics would be a better option. Questions, is 17 WSM amo as hard to get as some suggest and does it look like the the 17 WSM may become a thing of the past. Is the Savage B Mag in heavy barrel a good choice? Sorry for all the questions but will be a present for the young fella, thanks you.

17hmr has more energy than 22 magnum after 125 yards (give or take). The energy within 125 yards is still ridiculously high and more than enough to liquefy any small game it hits. I hunt rabbits/hares/foxes with my 17hmr and even body shots at between 10 - 150 yards, it absolutely drops them in 1 bullet. Don't really understand what experiences you've had with 17hmr Ozzie, as I have had consistent results with hunting small game. Great for headshooting Roos too. (but not good practise, I'll stick to .223 for those boys). Thanks ozzie

It's not a calibre I've warmed to, I prefer the 17WSM if I am going to use a 17 cal, but I like the 22mag personally...

The 17hmr NEVER has more energy than a 22wmr. Matter of fact, the 17hmr has less energy at 200yds than a standard velocity 40gr 22lr. Both 22 caliber rimfire are more versatile than the 17 caliber varieties.
@brucesouthee2514
@brucesouthee2514 5 жыл бұрын
it may have more energy but the 17 lacks the cavatation of the 22wmr wich is why it is no good on anything bigger than a rabbit /hare where i shoot deer with my mag it does more physical damage

I'm soon to have my licence, and i've pretty much decided on the Ruger American .22LR, however, i'm still undecided on the 18" or 22" Barrel. Being a city dweller most of my shooting will be at the range, but the idea is to have something that I can go rabbiting with (should the opportunity be forthcoming). Obviously the 18" would be easier to carry around, but would the longer barrel be of any benefit at the range since that's where it will get the most use?
@ozziereviews
@ozziereviews 7 жыл бұрын
I have the 22" standard model and it's ideal for the range and hunting, so I'd recommend it if you're a tall guy as the compact is more suited to shorter people with a smaller length of pull.
@1978sjt
@1978sjt 7 жыл бұрын
depends on what you call tall :p I'm 5'7, so I'm somewhere between tall and short :p 22" is certainly the cheaper option (unless purchasing with a hardwood stock), But looking at the website of my local gunshop I noticed they have just released a "target" version with a heavier 18" barrel and Picatinny rail ($175 more than the standard rifle)..... maybe I need to buy 2 :p

for the .22lr the 18" barrel is actually ballistically past the upper limit of what's needed, most people should refer you to the science that indicates it's actually too long so, so get the 18" - it's a no brainer........chuckhawks.com - check it out young man ! Back in the Day wiith Iron Sights, when Sight 'Radius,' more appropriately called sight length was needed for long range accuracy , the longer barrel guns with a longer sight radius could be Potentially more accurate and the longer, heavier barrel made the gun easier to hold steady, BUT YOU HAD TO LUG IT AROUND IN THE WOODS - with modern scopes 18" is better - there is something called 'lock time' - too long a barrel can be a detriment to accuracy .... btw, the MAJORITY of people commenting on firearm blogs have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to low velocity, rim fire guns, or any firearms for that matter. BEWARE hahaha. Get a heavy barrel, bolt action CZ instead, or save up for a Browning T-Bolt Varmint and put a Jard trigger in it - game over - family heirloom, either way, put THE BEST GLASS you can afford on it - that makes much more of a difference than barrel length imho - always will. For example, I have a Beeman R7 airgun with $400 Leupold Glass with an AO on it - and Everyone wants to shoot it instead of the pos plinker airgun they bought. My .22lr are even better. Plinkster's Unite : ). Life's Too Short to Own Crap Firearms.

I'm getting married soon with an Anschütz 1727F .22lr. Oh and she will be my very first rifle that I'll own. I believe that we'll have a long time relationship - so it's worth the extra pennies between it and i.e. the 1710 HB. The Fortner action has just put a spell on my mind since I've discovered it, though people say that the trigger is something just as exciting to look forward to. The next rifle with a more appropriate caliber for moose hunting - will be something as simple as an Finnish M39, if I can get a license on it and find one in a good condition. Thanks anyways for that 'ol 1727F .17hmr review, no one else seem to be wanting to share about the precious. :)

Haven't had a chance to test if it holds zero, but mounts just fine and has nice clear glass. Centered vertically true to a plumb line with the crosshairs which is always a plus!It's a great kzbin.infoUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope. There's no parallax adjustment or focus ring, so may be limited to 3-7x, have to see how it is on the range. Also be aware that the rings are "look through" so you can still use irons, but they are really tall if you only intend to use the optics. On a 22LR no biggie since I'm not shooting competitions or worried about a hard cheek press. Will boresight and range test, if all goes well, I'll leave it at that!

Hey guys anyone recommend a gun I'm 14 not much money on a property having a look for a good rifle, I like the look of the tikkas but I don't know much. Ammo needs to be cheap however I would like to be able to take on more than just rabbits roos and foxes. If anyone has any idea please respond

Get a 22lr or 22wmr for the rabbits and foxes and a 243 or 308 for anything bigger keep in mind it is illegal to shoot Roos without special tags. 243 and 308 are kind of expensive for ammunition around 1.50 a shot however 22lr is around $6 for a 50 pack ammunition costs will vary depending where you live. Good luck mate

I don’t understand why people get such high magnification scopes for hunting. I have a 3x9 and a 2x10. I find that even precision target shooting within 100M it’s more than enough and hunting I’ll comfortably take shots out to 300M at 10X. I feel like the quality of the glass and field of view is more important in most cases.
