This video is designed to get you thinking about your actual use of a centrefire rifle and what brand, calibre and scope you should consider. It is by no means an extensive list but I hope it helps you decide on the right setup for you.

I installed this optic on a crossman 760 air rifle.I have now shot the riffle around 500 times during target/plinking practice, and the kzbin.infoUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope has done well.With this optic, I have neutralized around 30 pigeons that were invading one of my buildings.For my short range air rifle, I will continue to use this scope, but will be upgrading to a more powerful scope, when I buy a more powerful air rifle, in order to shoot at longer distance.For the money I have spent, this scope has truly been a great buy.

Really nailed it again Ozzie, for beginners who can't afford too much, a good .22lr and a good .243W will cover most hunting situations, won't break the bank and won't make you develop a flinch!

I'd agree except 243 is not deer legal here in Vic. So I'd replace the 243 with a 308, which is a super common and cheap calibre with many great affordable options to shoot it out of.

@@towarzyszbeagle6866 i'd go and replace the .308 with a 30-06. was my first centrefire rifle and incredibly versatile. 100-110 grain load for dogs and foxes and all the way up to 220 for a big fat sambar. but i would agree that for a beginner without a loading bench, 308 is better

Hi mate As a beginner and first time rifle buyer I found this video really informative. I settled on a Tikka 223 stainless left hand. I do wish that in this beginners video you had stated what "small game" and "larger game" is. I got my 223 for wild dogs, however I dont consider a dog a small animal. The guy at my local shop said a 223 will take dogs, goats, some pigs and small to medium deer, all out to about 150 yards. Would be interested in your thoughts on this advise, as a beginner, all I have to go on is the advise of others. Many thanks

@countercivilization 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the video ! All military ammo/ caliber will have to be cheaper because mass produce. To the list I would personally add the 7.39 @ 123g/ 9 gr SP or FMJ (70c a shot) good hunting round for pigs and medium game at short to medium range. It won't have the finesse of a 223 but it will hit very hard. The high rate of twist in the 223 or 22-250 is design for those 75 grain projectile and tend to be too high for a standard 55 grainner. Some 22-250 cartridge (Remington) have a MV of almost 4000fps a laser beam easily past 300m, windy or not but not cheap to shoot.

Great video, but I think one important factor was glossed over here. If you're buying a higher end rifle, you're not simply paying for a more aestheticly pleasing finish and a smoother bolt. What you're really paying for is lower variability in accuracy between rifles of the same make/brand. Sure, you may get lucky with a cheaper rifle and have it be an absolute gem, but there's an even greater chance that it will be a dog that won't print a decent group under any conditions, with any ammo.By paying a little, or a lot, more for the rifle, you're shortening the odds of you landing a shooter.

Hey Ozzie, do you reckon that the Lithgow .308 you have would be too heavy for a stalking rifle? I have been considering getting one to become my deer rifle and returning my Ruger gunsite back to open sights with a red dot as I like to use it for general hunting and have a nice soft point load for it, but I try not to use lead for shooting things I eat and so have a Barnes load for it but dont want to swap between loads as they shoot differently. I also love the Lithgow rifles and will be getting one, I just trying to decide which calibre I would use the most as I already have a Sako .243 and a remington 223. I will be using the same scope you have as I would take it off it's current home on the ruger.
@ozziereviews
@ozziereviews 7 жыл бұрын
Yes it's pretty solid the Lithgow, you could carry it on a sling but you'd really want a lightweight scope. If I was buying something for long stalks, I'd be getting something lighter to be honest.

Hi guys.... Absolutely nothing wrong with 223 and I loved mine actually (Ruger Vt mark 2). Its barrel life is way better than my 243 (which happens to be exactly the same rifle) - Roo's in Chittering valley (usually) were the main target plus plenty of foxes, the odd goat and the rare pig. Night hunting with a spotlight - no worries with 223 - the ranges are not extreme and its more than deadly enough. But if we tried to set up on a hill top during the day and reach out say 700m +.... it wasn't cutting it. Theres no way you can get within 400m of a roo in daylight - smart critters). Take my advice.... whatever you get (and thats a nice choice), you will get far better accuracy as an extremely fussy hand loader that has done their homework - premium factory loads are not bad - but you can do farrrr better handloading if you are extremely fussy). Grab an old (unresized shell) and slide a bullet in the chamber at slightly beyond the recommended length.... the "Lands" will push the bullet back to the perfect fit spot just before lands..... measure it and Go just a few thou less when reloading - this should be perfect (BUT TRY a few different bullet seating lengths). Try all sorts of bullets (each are different shape so do the same for each brand and write it all down).... and vary the charge - then go and shoot "batches" as accurately as you can (bean bag under the stock etc). i found that often - a touch less than max charge is more accurate.... end result is that my 243 can hit a soccer ball at 900m with 17 clicks of the scope.... Oh - sight in one inch high at 100m.... you'll be within an inch out to about 350m on a 223 - otherwise you need to hold over. good luck guys
@anthonyspanjich2772
@anthonyspanjich2772 5 жыл бұрын
oh bullet choice..... huge difference!!!!!. if you are going for soft skinned game, do not even think of FMJ's.... they just sail straight through as if you poked a hole with a rod. go varmint (Roo's / foxes and similar) or hunting (controlled expansion) bullets (for say pigs). They leave a MUCH bigger wound channel and dump all their energy in the ummm "target"..... roo heads getting blown off was not uncommon (varmint).... but I'd have data on the hunting rounds from experimentation and just adjust my scope accordingly.

Anthony Spanjich cheers Anthony, love Chittering , I mainly hunt York way. I am going to trial an ATN X Sight Pro 5x2O scope as I want to do night shooting. It’s not as nice as a good glass scope during the day but from all reports works fine, I will probably miss that crystal clarity but it’s real benefit is night vision mode. It also has a built in ballistic calculator which may come in handy down the track, however having heard how flat shooting the 223 is this feature may be obsolete except at extreme ranges, I am not a hand loader yet but I must confess I am tempted. X5 magnification gives me the fov I need for a fox running in close and probably all good for most fox ranges. I’ve also got an infrared spotter monocular so I should have the capacity to spot any heat signatures in pitch black out to 250m , I’ll let you know how I go these school hols!

Great video. I'm deciding between 223 and 308 for my first centre fire. It's going to be a Tikka. I'm not a hunter, don't like killing things. I like target shooting, long-ish range, playing sniper on my property... things like that. If I ever have to take a dog to defend our pets, so be it but this is as far as hunting capability would go. Would you say 223 is not good at all for long range target shooting? Around 1000 yards. Cheers

Watch all the Vid mate he talks about 223 range options and other ammo aswell. If longer range 223 shooting you will need heavy slugs and a 1in8 ideally or 1in9 twist barrel.
@Rohster70
@Rohster70 7 жыл бұрын
Alex Swan if you're shooting targets out to or past 400m with 223 you have to get a 1:8 or 1:9 twist to stabilise heavier rounds. So that narrows it down. I eventually went with a Sako 85 Varmint, blued barrel and walnut stock. It shoots OSA best of the lot, sub MOA without fail. It's set up with a Zeiss conquest 5-25x50 scope. It's a pricey setup but it looks and feels great. Though I'm going to hand load with 75 or 80 gr rounds as I want to push this setup to 1/2 or 1/4 MOA. Every factory round 69gr or heavier I've tried has struggled to achieve MOA.

howa are cheap and shoot really accurate, son has a howa 22.250 shoots accurate as my heavy shilling barrel winchester m70 22.250. if you have the money go tikka. it all comes down to what people can afford really. dont think there is a rifle that shoots bad know days. look at magazine options and things like that you get. i am impressed with the howas for the money. so many cheap guns shoot so well now.

also if your long range shooting look at what twist rate of the rifle you want. if you hunt out to only 300 yards then mention what you want to the gun dealer, if you want to reload or buy factory loads ect. it all plays a factor on what your needs will be. howa action to me feels like a tikka we had 30 odd years ago they are smooth.

Darryn worthy I agree with you Darryn. I ordered a Tikka T3X with 20” barrel for max speed and 1/12 twist to max stability of light 50-55 gn rounds. Ideal for fast and flat out to 240 m and possibly 300m from what I’m told. As a fox shooter using a whistle my max requirement will be around 200m, beyond this I’m not sure if I can even see a fox! Plenty of hitting power.

I was thinking of buying a 223 mostly for target shooting but maybe some hunting. Question is, apart from smaller pest animals like foxes, what game can I shoot with a 223? My cousin says his farm is overrun with kangaroos at the moment... does a 223 have enough hitting power for a kangaroo? And I wanted to go goat shooting in the Flinders Ranges... would it be OK for wild goats?

Thanks Andre for your response. I've held off on the 223 for the moment and am now considering something a bit bigger for longer range target shooting (600m+); either 308 or 6.5 Creed. Ammo is a lot dearer though, particular for the 6.5 Creed

You say that a .223 can do what ever a .204 can do and more. My CZ .204 is a one in twelve twist, if I fire a 40 grain bullet from a .223 with a 1 in 8 my understanding is the jack will spin off a V-max. Am I correct in this or no? Rest regards.
@ozziereviews
@ozziereviews 7 жыл бұрын
The 1"8 twist on a 223 is to stabilise heavier projectiles 69/75/80gr so if you wanted to use lighter projectiles only I'd be sticking with the standard 1"12 twist with the 223. As for the jacket spinning off, I wouldn't imagine that being wrong as the projectile is too light for the tighter 1"8 twist but it's never happened to me because I would be using a standard 1"12 twist for those 40gr pills.

I'm looking to buy a reasonably high end rifle. Obviously I'm now expert as I'm watching this video, I am juggling between buying a 30-06 or a .308 I'm not rich but don't mind spending on something that will multi-purpose between everything and last me right up to when I become a high level shooter. Between 30-06 and .308 what would you recommend for me? Also what brand of rifle or even specific rifle would you recommend for me, I'm looking for one where I don't have to buy a second one when I move up in skill. I've had an eye injury and have to shoot left handed however I still use a right handed bolt, I could adapt to a left handed bolt if needed though. Thanks

308 as the ammo is more widely available and in more configurations. As for rifle it depends on what your use is...

Go with .308 tikka t3 ctr , its priced reasonably and a good hunting and range rifle , ur pocket won't mind too much as it's a very common cartridge and that will make sure ur trips to the range can b regular.

Thanks for the review, very helpful! What's your opinion on the 7mm-08 as a first-timer hunting rifle? I need something that is Sambar legal here in Victoria, and concerned about the recoil on the .308... I only weigh 60kg. :)

Sure, it has a little less recoil than the 308 but it's twice the price for ammo which is something you may wish to consider...

Thanks for that. Yeah, I've been told that by a few people... maybe I could get a .308 and start with a lower weight ammo to practice, then move over time move into heavier for hunting. That should ease me into the recoil and prevent flinch habits forming right?

Yes to a degree, so if you use the 135gr ammo from OSA in the 308 it is lighter than the 165gr ammo for example, although you could look at re-loading too to drop the powder load down a little but still maintain the energy required to hunt Sambar with

Keith Schlotthauer - I would stick with 308! Rounds are cheap, extremely effective, very versatile and you will probably not need to upgrade later! I would look at Tikka T3 or Howa for a good mid price rifle that have earned quite a reputation as tac-driving, lightweight, reliable, well machined hunters! Keep in mind that many area have regulations that stipulate minimum cartridge/bullet weights for certain game. For instance, in my state, the .243w round is allowed only for boar that weight under 90lbs! However, the .308 is allowed for all game in North America regardless of state! Also, don’t be tempted by the fad rounds that are great on paper targets but much less effective at dropping game. Stick with a round that all hunters respect! Good Luck and drop ‘em where they stand!!

thankyou was looking at 22.250 Tikka T3 but might go with 223 for fox hunting. I currently use a hornet, but have missed a couple further out ( my fault). I like the hornet cause its quiet, what is the difference between sound of 22.250 vs 223?
@darrynworthy7129
@darrynworthy7129 5 жыл бұрын
22.250 holds more powder than a 223, so it pushes the projectile faster shoots flatter, and both use the same projectile, my personal choice is 22.250. but 223 is cheaper in ammo choice only. 22.250 hits harder and shoots flatter.

Darryn worthy Thankyou, I hope I don’t regret it, but I’ve gone for the 223, bit kinder on the ears and from what fellow fox hunters are saying it will comfortably reach out to 200-240 m. Also I shoot on other farmers properties, 223 is a bit more acceptable. I’m a whistler so majority of foxes come in within 100m, I’m pretty crap at gauging range, wind drift and drop, but I’m hoping once I find a good round and put a few Downrange I can handle the odd fox out at 300m. I’m planning on a bit of night vision whistling with ATN X Sight and IR light. I’ve got a thermal monocular which should pick them up out at 300m, but my night vision limit will be around 200m I think. As long as I have a max of 2” drop out to 300 m range during the day. I’m thinking I’m all good. Cheers

you cant go wrong, any caliber you pick, they all will do what you want. its a personal choice. a 22.250 smacks them harder that is all. my nephew has a 223. put the shot in the right spot and an animal cant tell anyway. 223 is cheaper in ammo choice. if i was buying new and wanted cheapest ammo choice i would choose 223 myself, maybe lol. i have a 22.250 i love it. shooting 223 and 22.250 you can hear 22.250 is loader and it smacks a lot harder. i am 53 i only just started using electronic ear muffs now, and i give others a set who go to what us shoot. spot lighting you will most only likely see out to 300 yards anyway. sight it in an inch or 1.5 inches high at 100 yards, it should be close to spot on at 200 then you only need to raise an inch which is nothing on a fox chest really. dont over think it. stick with the same ammo, shoot and dont think too much. just shoot. brain to trigger finger. simple dont move and you wont miss many. the brains a fantastic computer. 100 yards is a 22 range shot. 223 will do fine. i used to only use a 17 rem cal in a tikka and it would put 5 shots in a 5c piece at 200 yards, i was spoiled with that type of accuracy, factory ammo when Remington factory bullets ruled. and we shot for pelts in the 70s 80s. everyone can argue all day on what they like in the end it doesn't matter. they all kill. its as simple as that. i have killed goats with a 22. its bullet placement. 223, 308, 3006 shoot something right its dead and dead is dead. 300 yards a 223 can do it easy. have fun and enjoy.

Darryn worthy sweet, thanks mate, appreciate the advice on sighting in and drilling a fox at 300m will be more than enough for me. I’ve been using a .22Hornet to date , loved it to 200m but just looking for that bit extra flat range, yep dead is dead ! That’s the way I like it , hate educating a fox to a whistle and then it gets away!

Darryn worthy how is the electronic ear plugs working for you? I love nature and listening to sounds while hunting , but aware I need hearing protection. Can you recommend a brand? My 223 is coming with a muzzle break fitted, I think it’s a bit of overkill for a 223, but it will make it louder! I was considering electronic ear plugs

I think it's a good calibre and great if you're into collecting or using the historic lee enfields in general but if someone is looking for a general large calibre, just go for 308. The ammo is cheaper, it's available everywhere and you got factory ammo from 110-200gr, so what more do you need? That's my honest thoughts...

Why is everyone promoting the 6.5 creedmoor. The 6.5X5 is still better, just not promoted by america because it's a metric cartridge and not designed in the usa. Only 3 rifles you need CZ452 in 22lr, 527 in .223 and Sako 85 in 6.5X55. Dont even need the middle one, two rifles are fine. you can shoot 100gr from 6.5 and undercharge it giving you 20+ rounds per case, or go 140gr and run it on the edge for range and big game. People Don't realise you can have a larger cartridge rifle and it becomes cheaper to shoot than a small cartridge rifle if you run it at lower pressures. Re-loading is easy and saves you money.
