One recommendation I'll add to the others, driving manual while wearing flip-flops or slide on sandals is much more difficult than wearing regular shoes, and the flexible part of your sandal can catch on the floor of the vehicle and mess up your shifting and braking.

Yeah! I noticed that. I had to lift my entire leg to clutch. Will start wearing shoes. Lol.

That looks like it's going pretty well. Couple of li'l kernels of advice if you want them (if not, then uh, I guess they're here - please ignore). * you want to be all the way off the clutch whenever you're driving, where possible. The clutch is two spinning plates that push together to transmit force from the engine to the wheels, and the pedal moves them apart when you press it. If you're on the pedal just a little, you can end up letting one plate spin against the other - you'll move, but you'll build up lots of heat and wear the clutch plates out early. It's totally fine to let it out slowly as you start moving, but don't "ride" the clutch as you're going down the street - let it all the way off and let the plates meet up properly. * A manual gearbox has a lot of momentum in it, and it's perfectly happy to spin freely if you let it. Stopping, just put the clutch in as you're passing through about five miles an hour and roll out, stopping fully with the brake pedal. Changing gear, you can just roll down the road with the clutch in while you move the gearstick, it'll be fine - but it looked like you were getting the hang of that in the hyperlapse. * Last, you were revving pretty high here and there. Small gasoline engines (i.e. not diesels) sometimes do that when not in gear and it's fine, but try and shift up (including from 0 to 1) with the engine turning relatively slowly, else you'll (guess what?) heat the clutch up because the engine plate will "skid" against the gearbox plate, and that can make the truck lurch unexpectedly. If you hear the engine heading for a stall you can give it a little gas but often just a little will do fine if you're careful with the clutch. I've been driving stick here in the UK for about twenty years, but I remember what it was like the first few times: pretty daunting. I mostly drive a diesel minivan, though - the Sambar looks a lot more fun once you get to grips with it :D

This is awesome! Thank for you all the information! I had a reread it a few times. I was definitely riding the clutch in the beginning because my brain was processing information so slowly and eventually learned it needs to go down/up quickly-ish. I also totally felt like I was revving too much and it needs way less gas to change gears. Thanks again for all the good feedback!

Well done for the 1st time! I have a Honda ACTY, and I love it. Still can't believe how much attention it gets. Learning manual is all about practice.

Lay off the gas when going in reverse, just clutch control is enough to get it moving

I'll try that next time! Thank you!

@@ADentistDoesHomeImprovement The sambar is geared really low. You barely need any gas in reverse or 1st gear. If you come off the clutch slowly you won't stall. One tip from when I learned to drive a manual. Give the gas pedal just the pressure of your resting foot and no more. Then practice letting out the clutch just to the point of feeling the bite point where the engine is starting to engage. Back off and keep doing it until you build a little muscle memory. Then you can slowly add throttle as you come off the clutch the rest of the way.

@@Acece665 Ya. I go straight into 2nd gear most of the time now. Thanks for the tip!

You certainly would never hear anyone in Europe saying they can't drive a manual, we all learn in manuals then can drive either, also in Europe 80/85% of all cars are manuals. Lol my god I thought the clutch was going to get burnt out coming out of the garage. Regarding learners learning In an auto it's usually the disabled with adapted cars , they are only learning schools for auto's.

Ive been following this intensely. Im in the process of getting a truck out in SoCal. I still cant decide on a honda or subaru. I barely fit in the sambar. I didn't try the acty.

Have you been driving this around a lot in SoCal? I have been meaning to follow up and holding off on bidding on ones already imported via carsandbis, depending on how the everything is still on the up and up with your Kei truck journey. Any pull overs from police? Are you only sticking to streets? What are taxes/fees for Montana going to look like next tax season, and will the car's renewal take place online? Thanks in advance!
@ADentistDoesHomeImprovement5 ай бұрын
Not driving a lot. Only surface streets and no police interaction yet. I have permanent Montana plates and haven't paid taxes on the LLC yet. Good luck!

You need to fully depress the clutch before you step on the brake. Think of it at pressing the clutch disconnects the spinning engine, and pressing the brake slows or stops you from coasting. Youll find driving in traffic that sometimes you'll just just push in clutch and not touch the brake to slow down in rolling traffic. Or press the clutch then brake a little going down hills. There is a lot of coasting when driving a manual.
@ADentistDoesHomeImprovement8 ай бұрын
Good to know! That makes a lot of sense thinking about the clutch disconnecting the spinning engine. Thanks for the good feedback!
