Some very good tips in there Jim. I'm particularly grateful for the one about how to use the hook itself to gauge how much feather to use. Liked, subscribed and many thanks to you.

I believe it is the responsabilty of more experienced tyers to help spread our knowledge to better the sport. I believe due to the widespread availabilty of videos and knowledge online the sport of fly fishing has grown by leaps and bounds over the last 20 years or so.

Thanks Jim this takes a lot of the mystery out of sizing wings and winging dries. I'm just getting into tying dries so this helps me a lot.

Hi Jim, Thanks you for the great tip for sizing the width of the quill sections for wings. I have trouble with the quill sections splitting. When I started tying 30 years ago we sprayed the duck quills with some type of clear enamel or something like that. What do you do or what would you suggest? Thanks for the great videos1 Mark
@TheFlymanJim9 жыл бұрын
I don't usually use anything to keep them from splitting. The enamel spray is a good idea. You can also use a drop of head cement at the base. Try to grip the wing firmly and not move your fingers when tying it in.

Good Lesson, Thanks!!.. What is the BEST duck quills to work with on a #10 hook, Mallard, Pintail, etc.? I fly fish mostly for panfish.. Thanks Again!!..
@TheFlymanJim4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really matter where the quills come from, it's more important that they match like I demonstrated. The most common on the market are probably mallard. But canada goose is probably pretty high too.

I have learned a lot from your videos. They are GREAT!!... I have just learned how to tie Walley Wings, now I want to learn how to mount and use duck wings.Your duck quill wings are alsome. I have some mallard wings on order. I'm having a problem with ordering collar hackle. All the hackle feathers I have ordered have fibers to long. The fibers on the hackle are longer than the wings are tall. When I trim the fibers down below the wings it looks unnatural. What kinds of hackle and how do i find the right size hackle? When it comes down to it, I don't know how to order the right size hackle. I mostly fly fish for Bluegill and use a number 10 or 12 hook. What kind of hackle do I need to get? Do you have a video on this subject? Thanks, Mike
@TheFlymanJim4 жыл бұрын
I do have a video on hackle in my Playlist "Materials". If you buy hen hackle or Partridge they should work, but some of the time I use rooster (dry fly) hackle. Then wrap back just one or two thread widths.

@@TheFlymanJim I will go back and look at your play list. I must have missed it. The only hackle I have got is rooster Hackle. I have been going to buy a Hungarian partridge pelt, but WOW they are expense. Thanks for the tip. I will go back and find your video. Thanks

Jim, thanks for the video. How can you manage if you only have a single wing to use as opposed to a right and a left?
@TheFlymanJim4 жыл бұрын
You can use two slips from the same feather but one will be inside out. It will still work.

Jim. This is a great video. I am still having problems keeping the shape of the song after I tie it on the hook. Any suggestions?
@TheFlymanJim9 жыл бұрын
Frank you need to hold the wing firmly when you handling them don't let fingers slide when you grip them. You can also put a drop of head cement at the base when you get them into position.
