Hi Denis. I am interested, but how is it different other CAGED books?

@@user-bdie6ikhd55w73hwgHello, check out my video that I posted on August 18 where i describe the book in detail. The CAGED thing is an advertisement that the publisher wrote, but the content goes beyond that as it’s really about connecting the ears to the instrument. The first few chapters do talk about CAGED but then it’s about visualizing and making sense of the notes u play in relation to the context/harmony. If you’re able to create chord melodies out of any single note on the spot, you probably don’t need the book!

I find jazz a bit complicated but I started guitar with Mississippi John Hurt/Piedmont blues style and I'm able to pick out melodies a bit but struggle at the chords tho

I couldn't agree with you more Denis. I have been playing for 35 odd years and my my first guitar teacher taught me the entire Brothers in Arms album (Dire Straits) including solos. It was so much fun to be playing music like this in year one. What we didn't cover was the theory. Perhaps he didn't know it or perhaps I was so enthusiastic about just learning tunes, that I will never know. There are so many resources for learning online that you find yourself drifting between people and not really settling down. My advice would be to find that person or online teaching tool that works for you and stick with it. Having experienced all of the Gipsy Jazz online teaching academies, I actually prefer your Soundslice lessons because I connect with your way of thinking / teaching.

Denis, your comments are refreshingly candid. They are reinforcing my belief that the teacher I am working with really has me on the right track. His philosophy seems to align with yours. What a wonderful pursuit music is.

yes - I believe you are taking and transmitting a very good approach. I've been in this music for approx 25 years and I think I can say I'm doing ok as a session player. But I am always impressed how the scene that comes together around Paris brings out musicians on a very high level. And I always thought that there must be something in the methodical approach which explains at least a part of that imo exceptionally high level. So I am glad to find quite a bit of confirmation of what I found through the years in your videos which I take as a good sign. Still on my lifetime journey to become a better version of myself in learning, playing and understanding jazz and how to approach it. And I think this is a great place to be especially in a world where a lot of other things turn more difficult than we thaught they were a few years ago. Thanks for your effort and for sharing your knowledge with the community, Denis 👍

Sort pal with all due respect the video title is misleading. This is a long speech about all the things some people do wrong. And not a single jazz guitar practice exercise. Perhaps is intended as advertising for your courses.

There’s a saying “Casting pearls before the swine!” Those who will understand will understand, those who will not, will not. That’s how it is! I do hope you find the universal exercise that will you play great jazz guitar and share that exercise with the world. I would be the first to practice it!

i think Dennis is sharing his personal and spiritual approach to the music. he after all, talked about how jazz is taught nowadays. he is just stating philosophical thoughts based from his personal experience that everyone should also think about when starting on their journey to learn this music. for exercises listen to the greats, and checkout the videos of dennis, he shows many licks, ideas and concepts on many of his videos, and also check " things i learnt from barry harris if you need more inspiration
