Beginner knife making part 3, Grinding the bevel on a knife.
G'day and welcome to a new series on making a beginner knife.
This is a simple little knife that is a copy of the first knife that I personally made, it has a very simple design that I first drew onto a piece of steel from a kit that i had purchased. The design was simple and made to fit the piece of steel I had by all means copy it or look at the references below.
Today is the grinding the bevels on the blade, I use a 2x60" grinder and a bevel jig to achieve this as discussed in the video do freehand grind as well but with a simple bevel as on this knife will tend to go with using the jig. I also feel that jigs make achieving acceptable grinds for a knife that you are going to sell much easier for the beginner.

Never made a knife. I never knew how to do bevels so I just never tried. If a fella had a decent jig, I would think that would be the way to go, you want both sides to be the same, so why not use a jig. I think people like to think they are special because they do bevels without a jig. It is just another way of doing something, doesn't make it any better or the maker anymore talented than one who does use a jig. I say if you got a jig, use it. Looks like something that would be easy enough to make. Thanks for sharing your technique with us. Looks great to me.... TTYL...

I thought I had responded to this sorry Ken. I use both the jig and freehand where required, jig works great on some jobs, saves time and effort while producing a great result there are other jobs that I need to freehand as the jig won't do the job. To me they are just another tool in my set. I would be like someone saying I suck because i use a small wheel instead of a file, Laugh and go back to my small wheel.

I started with a converted Bench grinder with a mulitool attachment, a decent grinder sure does make it easier.

Nice work bud I just subbed! A question? I asked another crafter why he turns the blade at the tip vs the straight run I saw you do? I’ve seen some run straight and some pull an arc at the tip?

Hey Steve, the downward curve of the tip of the blade means you need to swing slightly to get the consistent bevel, straight pull across leaves the tip not cut as much as the main part. As the blade curves down it is further back from the leading edge. A straight blade like wharncliff, sheepsfoot or Japanese style would be a straight motion.

Do you know the angle that you grind your bevels also do you increase the angle as you go up the blade

Those basic grinds are at about 9-10 degrees no need to go steeper as you would for a skandi or Sabre grind as the secondary bevel has that 20 degree type of pitch, going thinner means easier cuts. These are a flat grind so no change of angle, to make a convex style of grind have a look at the chefs knife grind in the LaLa Farms Knife playlist.

@3:17 how do you know what angle to set your jig to for the initial grind?

There are all sorts of formulas on the net as to how to work it out, but in all honesty I just look to see how the set angle is grinding and then adjust the angle slightly up or down to suit. I very much adapt each knife as I grind it, being in a jig does not take that free form aspect of knife making away for me.

@@DownunderFarmandForge Thank you. So if you do 25 degrees per side would you use a protractor to figure out the angle of the jig? Would the jig be set to 50 degrees or 25 degrees?

@@clapforboobies5892 jig would be set to 25 off vertical but that is really steep for primary bevels unless Sabre grinding. I’m normally around 10-12 on primary bevels
