Finger condoms, reminds me of a story about my Dad. He worked in animation during the early 90s, back when they still used ink and painted cels. They used the finger condoms to keep from smudging and my Dad snatched up a couple to show off. The first PTA meeting of my kindergarten class, my Dad went around showing the other parents the finger condoms claiming the school was teaching the kids safe sex practices. My poor mother was so mortified.

Thank you so much for talking about posture and ergonomics while painting! I'm a strength and conditioning professional and happen to also love painting miniatures and creating terrain. And this is something I think about all the time. I've noticed a lot of people with really terrible posture while painting and think of the damage they're doing to their body long-term. I've even thought about putting out a video on exercises to help correct these ergonomic issues, But then figured it might be too much of a niche market. I also noticed, thankfully, that during the marathon painting challenge, Brent from goobertown Hobbies, even got up to do some basic exercises. I'm glad some of the leaders in this industry/hobby are thinking about that kind of thing. It's a more important subject than the vast majority of people realize.

Life is too short to paint minis you don't _love_. Don't wait "until you are good enough" to paint a miniature. Companies come out with great minis all the time; you'll never run out. When you love the mini you are painting, you'll look forward to each painting session instead of treating it as just a chore to complete on the way to your real goal. Prime your minis. Yes, you can paint minis without priming, but priming makes your life so much easier. And primer != paint, even though it looks similar. Get real primer. Think about your primer color. There are reasons to use black, white, gray, or colored primers, depending on what result you want. Pick your primer color intentionally. Don't use bad brushes. You can use _cheap_ brushes effectively, but understand their limitations. Once the point starts to go, it's a dry brush. Hardly ever use tiny brushes. They don't hold enough paint and they dry out too quickly. Instead use bigger brushes that have good points. Quality Kolinsky brushes are the cheap way to get good brushes. They're more expensive on the front end, but they last much longer, take more abuse before failing, and they're more fun to use. Unload your brush before applying it to the mini. If you're using thin paint and don't unload, you'll flood the surface and hate life. Don't hate life. Use something that fits your hand well to hold your mini while painting. If you're directly holding the mini, your hand will get tired much more quickly, you'll put finger oils onto the surface of the mini that will keep the paint from sticking well, and you'll rub paint off. _Do not_ put your elbows on the table. If somebody bumps the table or your chair while you are painting, you are screwed. Heck, even heavy steps on the floor can cause vibrations that mess up your brush strokes. Instead, brace your elbows against your rib cage and the heels of your hands together. This promotes better posture and isolates the mini much better while still giving you really good painting stability. (Feel free to ignore this if you paint alone in a room with a concrete floor, and heavy chair, and a closed door.) Do almost all your painting with a single, consistent brush stroke. Move the mini so that stroke will give you the result you want. This will improve your brush control faster than any other technique. Don't be afraid to mix paints to get the color you want. It's not hard and it saves a _lot_ of money. Related: Don't buy full paint sets, pick and choose to need. Don't ignore color wheels, but don't let them govern your life either. When used judiciously, they can be helpful, but by themselves they can be worse than useless. Yes, complementary colors can be effective, but bright blue and bright orange isn't necessarily a great way to go. (Although, "Go Broncos!") Paint the eyes first! Yes, they're hard, that's why you want to paint them before you put lots of effort into the area around the eyes that will need to be repainted when you inevitably mess up.

I still consider myself a beginner painter, here are three issues I've recognized for myself: 1. Letting a model or mini become *bigger* than it is, or should be. 2. Doing too much research, setup, preparation, planning etc..instead of painting. 3. Letting fear rule the day and spoil the fun.

One of the best tips I ever learned for myself was that you cannot look at someone else's work and directly replicate it when you're just starting out. You need to learn the techniques slowly over time and just not try to plow straight in and use everything on one model.

To your point about the 10K hours thing. Let me offer you a different perspective on that. If you spend 10K hours just practicing chords on your guitar you will be a master at chords. You are only a master of the skill that you are repeating. I really couldn't see how the second part of that tip related to the first part except perhaps that you were trying to say that painting is an evolving skill. I think what needs to be said about the 10K hours thing, is that the point of human life is growth. So if the thing you are doing, especially anything artistic is limitless, then you should continue to strive and learn. But the basics, the very first steps will always be something you are a master at. Assuming it's 10K hours of mini painting, you'd have gotten the hang of priming and zenithal by 10K for sure. As usual, I enjoy your podcast. Thank you for pushing that content out there.

The biggest thing iv learned and what i think is the cornerstone of the hobby, paint chemistry. From how thin can i make the paint, brand, what to thin it with, what paint mixes well, how much paint on the brush etc etc and holding myself to a standard. Tbh i think to be a decent painter you just need to know how the paint works and sometimes it doesn’t matter how many videos you watch until you put the paint on the brush and know it yourself.

Now you have to do the play and paint :D That would make an awesome video! If model dies you can't paint it, so after game whoever paints more points wins! For new painter I think the biggest pitfall is to discard idea of getting an airbrush. Priming, varnishing, basecoating, tinting, stencils, etc. It's useful and helps with basecoating (especially for all the marines and vehicles). In straight up mini painting, not for gaming, it might not be the must have, but I still would recommend jumping on that train. It revitalized my love for painting. It OK to mess up, you'll get better with practice! Indomitus Necrons part looks so cool! I've sold mine, but only because I cannot justify another 40k army(yes, I have marines, space wolves). That game system makes me feel burned out sometimes(hopefully now that primaris gets all needed kits we will see some other armies gets love like necrons are getting, maybe eldar?), AoS is getting me pumped much more. Model you speak about, the one sucking matter from that dude, is not in the box. He's called Illuminor Szeras and he's sold separately. Cool model.

Painter Tip - I guess something to add to what you guys stated in your Pitfalls. Record your painting steps in a painting note book/note taking application. Allows to go through and analyze what you are doing when going through the motions. Also great for reference to go back to when you are taking a break or painting other miniature lines and come back to your previous armies to paint more. Wish I was doing this myself when I first got into painting over 10 years ago. Painting schemes do change overtime but that due to painting skills improving and adding more detail to your work.

I am not yet a mini-painter, I'm eager to start once I've completed some other DIY projects I'm busy with. I'm already guilty of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and GAME (Green Army Man Experimentation) I've collected paints, primers, some cheap brushes, stuff to make a wet pallet, etc. The army men are for testing colour choices, practicing priming, etc. Nothing that needs detail. I'm looking to get into mini-painting for Star Wars Legion, I grabbed a core set and expanded on it for both Imperial and Rebel in equal measure so I can play with anyone who visits and we can make up our armies with equal opportunity. I have 3 board games with minis that I'll paint first so I can level up by painting more minis before I delve in Star Wars.

One of the biggest beginner's painter pitfalls might be (at least for me) to watch hundreds of YT tutorials. Most related to Jon's first point. Anyway you start to watch them, you find out that this person is using this color, then this one. If you use any other color from different manufacture it will be not the same. You probably need also 4 types of brushes maybe even Airbrush too. Not to mention all other stuff. If you try to follow up these videos step by step you come to this paralisis, that you really need to have all these stuff so you miniactures looks good. Maybe just watch the beginner guides, how to do what. Just to have some starting ideas and then do not look at anything else because you might not start any time soon :).

You know the game where one person starts a sentence/story and someone else picks up where they left off? Then they pass it to the next person? Why don't you all (Jon, Scott, Vince and Sam) play a game. Starting with 4 primed minis, each person paints for 30 minutes. No talking scheme or painting ideas. Pass it down the line to the next painter. After 2 hours you have 4 frankenstein minis that you can talk about how they are unique/awesome or how the previous person gave you a POS to try to fix up.

Organic is a term defined by the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) under the Department of Agriculture and is regulated through the FDA as well as other accrediting agencies. In simple terms, it requires humane treatment of animals and no or limited chemicals/pesticides for livestock and crops. All of their regulations are accessible through various .gov websites.

Maybe the license plate that read "TENDIE" wasn't talking about nuggets, what if the guy was a goalie in a hockey league or they just like goaltenders in general cause tendie is also a word used when referring to goaltenders but thats just my guess, love both of your channels and watch as much as I can but for some strange reason I'm still a bit scared to mess up my minis with a crap paint job, what can I do to get over the fear and just jump in and start something even if it's gonna end up looking nothing like I have it pictured in my head? Thanks in advance

Take time to step back and check from, not just a different angle but also from a greater distance what you are painting. I don't mean at the end of your session only but while painting. Getting to mentally involved in having every brush stroke exactly where your mind/eyes tells you it should be might take away time and fun from what you are working on, to then just realise that part of the mini or the mini as the whole is fine or even great as it is.

The expression "Practice makes perfect" should be replaced with "Practice makes permanent". I know you've talked about this before in relation to GW's painting tutorials, but it's really important to be aware that some skills and styles are dead-ends for mini-painters. "Ten thousand hours practice" is missing a key word: deliberate. An hour of deliberate practice is worth a lot more than an hour of repeating a skill you can already do on autopilot.

To be fair anyone painting so much would pick up on different ways to paint if they sat and painted minis for months on end, or they would recognise when their end results seem to have holes. I've just realised with my painting I need to start wet blending as there is no shading going on with my minis. The only people who would paint forever without improving are those who have no desire to improve.
