This is what I learned on my best ever day of painting minis. I had been stuck on a plateau, and then I broke through. Painting the shields on these Seraphon Saurus from Warhammer Age of Sigmar helped me to put a whole lot of stuff together. Hopefully you can learn a little something from my experience!

Something i've always had to keep in mind when painting is...wet paint isn't an accurate depiction of what the dried paint looks like. Sometimes I have to walk away and let the mini sit over night, and come back the next day when it's fully dried and i'm always pleasantly surprised how well they naturally blended once dried! Nice looking work and a great sample sculpt for practicing muscle tone highlights!

most people when showing "how it's done" don't show how it's done, they just show off. Refreshing to find someone who does show how it's done. I still have problems though applying this in practice, and that is that my hands just aren't steady enough (carpel tunnel), poor eyesight and hand-eye coordination doesn't help either. It's the same with painting eyes and other tiny details.

You are so supportive, I love listening to you telling me to trust the process and that I will get better. Mini painting is a test of confidence, you start out with none and quickly get discouraged. Keeping a blind faith that it will all work out is essential for me. I have a few mini's that came out terrible and made me want to give up, one day I will go back to them and try again and I have faith that it will be better next time. Thanks for the supportive words, keep being awesome!
@mouseketeery

Pushing through the ugly phase(s) is so important. I think quite a lot of people give up at that point or decide they've mucked it all up and they have to strip the mini and start again. As you say, "Have faith in the process" - it will probably end up so much better than you think part way through it.

Having faith in my plan until the model is more finished was a huge revelation for me too. I would always get disappointed in how a part looked, but when I started sticking it out and continuing the model would suddenly come together and look fantastic. Sometimes, even a highly-skilled part of a model won't start looking good until the rest of it is worked on too!

@bigolbearthejammydodger6527
@bigolbearthejammydodger6527 4 жыл бұрын
your so right about this, and the next step from that point is to understand (and practice) wet blending and finally to understand specularity (or shinyness) the more shiny you want that part of the model to look the closer the tighter the blends should be and the lighter the final point should end. on this matter painting gems and glass and other translucesnt objects should transit to darker rather than lighter where the light hits - BUT the specular light is refelctive and so inside the darker point you need a spec of light reflection. Keep painting friends!

Sometimes sitting there looking at my models wondering if I can give it the paint job it deserves, most times I put the model down and walk away from it for months. Very inspirational to learn that you don't need to be some genius or have a specific talent, but that the right technique, motivation and practice will do the job just fine! Great video, Brent! I just came by to personally thank you for bringing me into this new hobby. I was kind of interested in painting some Boardgame miniatures that came as a birthday present, but the hobby seemed scary, overwhelming and I lack a lot of artistical talent. Your video about painting the nightvault barbarian warband really showed me that getting started is easy and the other videos you showed were so full of positivity and chilled, that I gave it a try. 3 months later it has become one of the most fullfilling, relaxing and wholesome hobbies I have ever started, as I can just sit down, accept that every time I pick up a miniature I am learning sth new and enjoy the slow progress while listening to audiobooks. Thanks for bringing that into my life. You, Squidmar, Miniac and of course uncle Atom are truly an inspiration for us hobby starters and an enrichtment for youtube!

Hi. I found this channel only recently. I really like the way you talk to beginers. I have been painting for many years. Before the acrylic takeover. Lol. A total noob with acrylics. I paint in oils so the blending is easy and a smooth transition between shades with no lines is simple. Another advantage is that i only have 20 tubes of paint and any shade is easy to mix from that. I still use the original tubes i bought back in 1996 when i started and i have painted hundreds of figurines or minis as you call them now. Oils are expensive when you start but as i say 25 years later i am still using those same tubes. I have been watching many of your videos during lockdown and enjoy the way you teach. Sorry this is so long. All the best. Stay safe.

Would you ever do a Koopa paint scheme on one of these models? I feel like it would fit really well.

A while back I started taking on painting in general, not just painting figures, but painting on canvases and digitally. I discovered really quickly that if you start freaking out about how things look in the early stage, you're not giving yourself a chance to take them to the later phases. When you said that line about "ugly phase" I felt that. When I realized that is a wiggly line toward a goal, I found my attitude toward my work improved and it gave me a better relationship with my art which in turn meant I had more fun creating it. I'm glad you and others are out there encouraging other people in this way, bless you for this.

I'm sure this has been covered in a previous video, but can someone explain the cat paintings in the background?

I have two cats that look roughly like those two paintings. I needed some fun colors as a backdrop... so I whipped up some cat paintings! The plan is to rotate the art hanging up behind me occasionally :-)

So basically it could down to “follow the basic programming process, but with paint, not code.” That is exactly what I needed to hear.

This video was great for many reasons. On a weekend morning that smooth calm voice depicting an obvious skilled hand and techniques. There were physical demonstrations and articulate breakdowns of the actual subject matter and with software. I was inspired to pick up my brush and try some blends because that looks great! Thank you!

Just painted my third miniature ever, and after having watched this video, came up with a result that blew me away. I'm now convinced that this is something I really can do. Weirdly, I still struggle mightily with edge highlights, but I guess everybody's different that way. Anyhow, thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. It's made such a difference in my hobbying life.
