In this video I show you how I took three pieces of wood and created a dramatic change to my hallway. This project is perfect for any beginner woodworker but can be finetuned by any advanced woodworker.

Shelves look great! Less is more. I would remove some items and let the remaining items breathe. You can group the items and leave spaces between the grouped items or alternatively you could go completely uniformed and place the same sized frames equal distance apart along the entire shelf. You may consider adding pops of colour that tie into the rest of your room also.

haha, yes, sometimes hearing it from an outside perspective can make a difference. Styling decor is indeed an individual thing and can be difficult working out how to blend two different styles in a home. I would simply convey that when you have too many items together, none of the items get a chance to shine. You can always rotate your favorite items in and out to refresh the look. Changing them seasonally is a fun and cheap way to get a whole new look without very little effort! @@jascogoods

The gray looks good. If you painted the shelves white, the white frames would blend in too much to the shelf. It would be difficult to see where one ends and the other begins. The same is true with black. Since you stained the shelves gray, it works with both white and black frames. Good idea!

@@jascogoods you might consider mounting these frames on the wall in a square or rectangle painted in a contrasting, complementary color. You could even “frame” the square or rectangle with simple moulding - sort of frames within a frame. See what the boss thinks about this non traditional idea.

I think it looks great. If you’re wanting to change it any, maybe alternate one black frame and one white frame back and forth. And set it so that either end is either black or white. Or do white on either outside and black in the middle, then on the other shelf black on either oustide and white in the middle. There’s such possibilities with this.

Nice project. My comment is offered with complete respect, not as a snarky jab - and my explanation might be incorrect in some details but the general idea is true. KZbin calls it "engagement." As to oil based paints and stains and water based polyurethane clear coats or acrylic paints... there's an old saying in the art community, "you can put fat over lean, but you can't put lean over fat." (Think of it as you can add fat to a skinny guy but you can't add skinny to a fat guy.) Oil based stains and paints never fully cure, they continue to cure or leech out oil almost forever, and they never set up as hard or seal so thoroughly airtight as a polyurethane. You saw how even after three days curing, your black finish was still transferring on the brush into your clear coat. It will eventually cure to the point that you don't see this, but it will never cure to the point that there is no oil content. So, in the long term, you may find that a "lean" finish applied over a "fat" (oil-based) finish will fog, distort, crinkle, crack, or peel off due to the build up of materials that leech out of the fat layer. When you do lean over lean, or fat over lean, this does not occur. When you do fat over fat, the materials that leech out of the underlying layer keep on going out through the covering layer. You can also think of it as placing a layer of plastic wrap over something that has a little moisture content, so that you get a fog of condensation under the plastic wrap. The basic idea is that oil based products should never have a product that seals them in better than another oil based product - the skinny is never outside of the fat - but you can "build up" putting oils over a lean base.
@YTubeSDD
@YTubeSDD 8 ай бұрын
I appreciate your explanation and mostly agree. I want to add that shellac can often do a good job of sealing in an oil based paint or finish. So a couple coats of super blond shellac might not be a bad topcoat here. Or at least in between the oil stain and the water poly.
@xray7908
@xray7908 8 ай бұрын
4@@YTubeSDD Thanks, and again, this principle comes from the art world, for painting, so it might not fully apply in wood working. It's an often discussed principle in art, there are many KZbin videos on the subject for anyone who wants to get more opinion or info.
@jascogoods
@jascogoods 8 ай бұрын
I am here for the input and sharing of ideas, I could never get mad at someone explaining something as well as you did. I have seen the fog you are referring too. It especially does this where I have touched the wood as I am staining. I have also had to sand down projects I clear coated too soon because the "fast drying 2 hour stain" didn't fully dry after 48 hours. The only reason I still use the water based clear coat is because I love the matte finish. I cant find another topcoat that has the matte finish. No clearcoat is truly matte but this one is close. do you know of an oil based top coat that comes in a matte finish?
@xray7908
@xray7908 8 ай бұрын
@@jascogoods I'm no expert on this stuff, but thanks for asking as if I might have some valid opinion. I probably don't! I think if I wanted a matte finish on a wood project, I'd skip the oil based stain and go right to a matte finished paint. It won't have the same depth as a clear coat over stain of course, but in my mind, a matte finish shouldn't have any depth, it should be very flat. A personal bias on my part. My other thought would be, are there any suitable stains that aren't oil based? I trust you've done your research, more than I and you're using the best combo you could come up with. Allowing considerably more cure time might help, but I'm the worst when it comes to impatience and screwing up because I wanted the project done now.

Great job! 🎉 I made one of these shelves for my brother in 2019 to rest the end of his fishing poles on and used another board with cup hooks strategically placed above the shelf to hold the smaller end of those fishing poles to hold them vertically…skinny end at the top, handle resting on the shelf. (I hope that makes sense without being able to share a picture of the configuration.). He was grateful for the organization to keep them off the floor and out of a tangled mess.

I think the color of the frames will depend on what you're trying to accomplish. Do you want to highlight the contents of the frames? Stick with a black that blends with the shelving. This works best if the image itself isn't dark, because then the photograph/image also blends in - which is where the frame itself can help highlight the photo - see: the photograph next to the F in Family. The frame is black, but the white border helps emphasize the photo in it even though that photo is also dark. That is, if the frames part of the picture/image, in that they work together? In that case, contrasting colors are good, as they'll draw the eye and make the image larger than. All in all, thank you for this video, and running through how you made it and giving commentary with more detail after the fact. I also appreciate that it's more your commentary than the sound of machinery. I like knowing how you made it and the thinking behind your decisions, as that helps me figure out why you did something and if that process would then apply to my own work in the future. As an example: you applying the stain and then immediately removing it. If you hadn't stated why you did that, someone (like me) could have automatically done that because "that's what he was doing" and, not knowing why you were doing it, we would have been confused why our results were different. So, thank you.

4:06 First time viewer (so far I like this format). A trick I saw about inside corners and glue squeeze out, is to use a plastic straw (if you can still find them!) to force the glue into the straw by plowing the straw along the corner.. 8:36 This is where I will say, "When lining up to mount anything to a wall, masking tape is your friend."

Yea I have seen that straw thing now that you mention it. ill have to snag a few next time I go to a fast food place. Thanks for the suggestion.

Simple but absolutely perfect ! Thank you for sharing as this is exactly what I need. Restoring a old Victorian bungalow and my daughter needs shelf space in her room. I'll paint them gloss white on a grey wall and they will look lovely. Subbed..

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. I think the white on gray is going to look great! I really like shades of grays and blacks and whites! its adding colors that throws me for a loop.

I've used that same stain before, it never stops giving up color - so it's really good advice to put your topcoat in a smaller container.

Yea its weird because this is a fast drying 2 hour stain but in some ways it seems worse then my classic stains!

The temperature is relevant, but the humidity levels are key. The fact you live in an arid climate is probably the main reason it dried so fast. Working in the a/c is helpful if you live in a hot/humid environment. Your project looks good.

yes and when I use a water based stain it dries even faster. I want to put an ac unit in my garage. One of those little mini ones.

Simple but effective idea! I like that you had the mix of black and white with the grey shelves. I’m starting this today - I have pinkish walls in my hallway so I’m going to use white oak boards and keep it natural.

Great video. Man I wish we were neighbors. We would have some great conversations. My wife and I agreed the color you used to stain with really looks good against the color of the wall. She already picked out where she wants to put those on our walls. Well I guess it a trip to my local home improvement store this weekend. I probably of went there anyway 😁 👍

thanks brother, I started using a weathered gray on some of the furniture I've made but its much lighter than this. We just happened to stumble on this carbon gray and I used it on some floating shelves I did and we loved it. Now i want to rebuild the furniture I made and use this gray!

Small projects like this make perfect videos. Just try to keep them under 10 min and make more of them. In the beginning quantity is important. Just get out there. You’re talented and funny. The kind of guy people would love to learn from, or have a beer with.

With your head: You are your own worst critic. Don't worry about it, try not to bring attention to it if you're self conscious about it, but honestly, I didn't notice till you mentioned it and still don't see it as any sort of big deal. The shelf looks great. I think the size and variety of the frames is great. I might spray paint a couple of the frames white for a little more contrast

What a good idea, I wish I had thought of it, I have photographs of my grandchildren for babies to teenagers I will be busy in my shed in the new year, thanks for the idea, I think I will use smaller timbers though, sorry, but they look a bit bulky, but a good idea anyway
@jascogoods

No Problem, thank you. I agree on the smaller timbers thing. Even if its just the front one because it blocks the bottom of the picture frames and we had to put the word family up on the lip because it looked funny with the bottom of the letters missing.
