Love my 2000 2.5! No rust and with 110k on it she still looks stunning! Just bought the steel plate kit to repair the sagging glove box. If course, the plates came with no insulation instructions, so I guess I’ll be figuring that out myself, but it can’t be too difficult. I must say I’ve owned many many cars in my life including sports cars and this is the most fun I’ve ever had driving a small, two seater convertible. It’s so responsive and just drive so beautifully. It’s always been garage kept and it’s in just stunning condition, thank you so much for your video. It was great to watch, and I am going to look for a few things that you mentioned that I haven’t previously looked at.

Thank you for your INFORMATIVE AND THOUGHTFUL VIDEO showing that it is a EXPERIENCE not just a CAR. I had a 1964 MGB back in 1971 that I REALLY MISS. The Z3 is VERY MUCH like the 1964 MGB ROADSTER. I ALSO had a 1974 Fiat X1/9 that I put 185/60VR-13's that made it like driving a oversized GO-KART. I ALSO loved the removable hard top, GLASS BACK WINDOW, built in rool bar, UNBELIEVABLE TRUNK SPACE for SUCH A SMALL CAR and GREAT GAS MILEAGE. NOW that I'm getting OLD (70) I MISS the FUN OF DRIVING, I WANT AND LIKE MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. THE ONLY WAY TO DRIVE unless you run into HEAVY TRAFFIC then I'll just go a DIFFERENT WAY OR PARK AND WAIT.😉👍😁 PEOPLE JUST DON'T REALIZE WHAT THEY ARE MISSING without driving a CONVERTIBLE WITH THE TOP DOWN AND SHIFTING GEARS DOWN A WINDING ROAD. 😘👍

I have a 2002 3.0 sport roadster. Gearbox has been obstructive lately, so acquired a second hand one. What did the gearbox feel like? May I ask what what problema you had abs where you got a new one? I have a 2001 3.0i and sometimes when it’s not warm it’s hard to get in first gear. 75k miles so hoping a transmission fluid change will help
@michaelholman5851

@@anthonydominguez6063 I got my gearbox via eBay and it came from a breaker in Poland(!) The gearbox was noisy in gear and a bit obstructive from 1st to 2nd. The replacement (from a 530i) is quieter, but the bias spring from 5th gear(brings the stick back to between 3rd & 4th in neutral) is weak and, especially when cold, you end up “fishing” to find 3rd or 4th. I was a prat really as that would have been easy and cheap to fix when the box was out 😜. I suggest you empty your gearbox oil and refill with clean oil before doing anything else more drastic 👍

What most people hate about BMW's are the cost of repairs...what I have experienced and I've owned 5 of them, (3 of which I still have) is good oil, good gas, and good tires and brakes...they are not expensive if you take care of them and don't run them hard.

Just purchased a 1998 today that is amazing shape with just over 92,000 miles. No rust, convertible top and rear screen are basically new. The drive home with it was just amazing in the handling. I took a pretty crooked road home just to test out the handling - awesome!. The only thing that I need to do is get the front seats restitched. Leather is not torn, just the stitching has come apart. Hello. It's about 11pm and I'm doing last minute research b4 I purchase one tomorrow. My choices are a silver 4 cyl automatic for $3000 U.S. with a top that has to be manually raised and lowered and 182,000 miles / A 6cyl Automatic with only 86,000 miles that is black on black or another 6cyl with a manual but it has a small dent on the passenger side just forward of the side marker and the drivers window needs manual assistance. The later 2 choices are both $5,300.00 U.S. Never knew anything about them except that they looked very cute. I'm also 6ft 1inch tall. lol Today is Mar 28 , 2024. What do you think? Wish me luck!

Had my 1.9 since June has been great fun. Like you mentioned tho it’s the 2001 version and sadly it just isn’t pokey enough at all. And the engine is a let down. I’ve had an overheating problem since September, replaced thermostat, water pump, expansion tank (which didn’t fit - febi replacement) to then replace the radiator as it came with a fitted expansion tank. Still having problems now is an absolute pain to bleed. Love driving it but rn feel to scrap it. Regret buying the 1.9 so yeah if you can go for the older engines or a 6 cylinder. Stay far away from the facelift 4 cylinders.

Bought a 10 year old 2001 z3 3.0i with 90,000 miles on it 10 years and 100,000 miles ago. These things are made so that anyone with a half decent tool kit can fix them. If your seat belt holder that is attached to the seats on the door side is broken you might consider the fix that I came up with. I went to a electrical supply store and bought some large black heat shrink tubing for splicing wires or cable. I was able to get some that gave me about 2 inches on both sides of the fracture. It has held up well for 6 to 8 years and it blends well with the original color as the original. A very simple fast fix a few dollars

I love the steptronic in my 3.0i. You can cruise on auto ore push on semi manual on twisty roads. The only proplem is that it likes to overheat and go into auto only. I had a E34 2.8i with the predecessor gearbox, and it destroyed it self at 150k Miles. The Auto Gearboxes are very good, until they brake. I will change the Auto to Manual when it brakes down. And it will.

@@mikeholland1031 bad valve cover gasket leads to vacuum loss in the PCV system, which leads to oil burning. Oil leakage from the gasket itself is negligible but noticable, because it drips onto the exhaust heat shield. Burnt oil smell after a long drive is a classic giveaway.

I’m also prepared to flush and replace all fluids, belts, hoses, and gaskets as soon as I get the car. It’ll be my 3rd car (so it will not be daily driven), think I’ll be ok? Seen plenty of Z3s with 150,000 + miles. As the old saying goes, as long as its been looked after regularly, it's good to go. Be aware that it may need perishable parts replacing like hoses, the thermostat, brake lines etc. If you want to see other high mile examples and talk to the owners to get some more insight, have a look at the forum I have linked in the description. Finally, check for rust. That's what did in my Z3 at 145,000 miles. Other than that it was great!

It’s common to have clunking, and first to second takes a hammering from the torque, especially on the bigger engines - but a gearbox change, new clutch and DMF haven’t completely eliminated my clunk (though improved). It could be that the replacement box has a similar issue, but I think some (also common) play in my diff is probably to blame. Most say to leave this alone as it is a slow-burn, and diff rebuilds are expensive in the UK plus beyond my ability and tools.
@dodgysteve7699
@dodgysteve7699 3 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends where the clunk is coming from. When I bought it, my 3.0i clunked on 1->2 gear change. Turned out the rear shocks were completely shot (90000 miles old), causing the whole diff to move when changing gear. New shocks = no more clunking.

Its due to a bad center bearing support on the driveline.. it cheap and easy to fix. I dont know why but internet "experts" almost always overthink it and send people on the craziest wild goose chases, but thats what causes it. You will need to loosen or remove part of the exaust system, a heat shield, the driveshaft and the bearing itself. Its all much easier than it sounds and will fix the problem.

Nice video & thanks for the care and maintenance insights. I can feel your passion when you speak about your Z3 & I completely get it. I've loved their Retro look from the day I set eyes on one and there are very few cooler rides (my opinion) roadster or coupè. I'm in Australia and my lady and I use my Z3 like a baby GT. The boot is small though with a little imagination you can certainly get enough gear in there for a driving holiday and what better way to do it. It's early winter here as I write but I still love driving with the top down and the exhaust note is quite intoxicating I agree. Mine's the 2.0i M52 (topaz blue metallic, manual, roadster), while I'd like a little more torque, on a winding road keeping the mill between 3 and 5.5 it really is great fun. The smile factor is off the chart. Mine's a high miler but is still tight and is getting restored from the mechanicals out. I love it and would recommend to anyone that is thinking about a Z3, just do it. You won't regret it. Thanks again for your video and keep them coming.

@michaelholman5851
@michaelholman5851 3 жыл бұрын
There is no connection between your brake fluid and your exhaust (unless you put the brake fluid in the oil filler 😳) so your white smoke is an engine issue, maybe coolest water leak into the cylinder or engine running cold from thermostat seized in the open position, for example. In any event it needs checking.

Those are the 6 cylinder engines, yes they got better. For the 4 cylinder they got worse in terms of performance. The M44 140bhp with 16v dropped to 118bhp with 8v so a clear loss in power. To be honest they're all great engines and the car is amazing whatever engine it has

Great video with detailed intro. Would you point your finger to the right direction for proper suspension kit for replacement as the vehicle started to bottom out when going over humps? It’s a year 2000, 2.3 and it didn’t do that when I first possessed the vehicle years ago. I believe either the springs or the struts/shocks or both had worked?
@FeelTheDrive
@FeelTheDrive 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching! In terms of your suspension question, if you're not looking to change how it feels stock then go for the OEM suspension, Sachs shocks and Monroe springs are a pretty common pairing. Whichever brand you go for, the new parts will improve the car from where it is now bottoming out. If you want to improve the performance the kit used and recommend by a lot of owners is the Bilstein B-12 Pro Kit Suspension. It also drops the car 30mm. One step further is to move to coilovers, KW & BC racing are pretty well recommended. Keep in mind these won't be true coilovers as the rear coil and shock sit independently of each other. Hopefully that helps! Feel free to check out Zroadster forum as they have a wealth of knowledge there!
