I totally love this pod casting that you do. You have given me the confidence to start investing now; I love you saying that you are now at the point where you could not work for five years. So ... based on what I have been listening to I have now invested £20, 000 into a stocks and shares product, with another £80, 000 into my pension which is now doing really well (also I don't actually pay income tax because of the amount of monthly pension I contribute which gives me more free money). Next year I am now set for another £40, 000 to invest in futures while having additional emergency funds available. Well done with this guys!!! I genuinely think you are helping to democratize investing.

Just want to point out that the FTSE250 is not the top 250 companies by market capitalization in the LSE - it's actually the top 101st to 350th companies by market capitalization. The FTSE350 is both of them combined, which would be the top 350 companies.

@29:00 re: crypto. Here's my plan: Buy a pound of gold and a bitcoin (they are about the same price). If in 10 years, the bitcoin goes to 0, the gold will probably have gone to 2x, thus negating the loss. If BTC goes to $1m per coin, then ker-ching.

I think the analogy for the apple tree that's really useful is: you water the tree and care for it every year. However, if one year it doesn't produce very many apples, you hopefully wouldn't stop watering it and chop it down in frustration. The same way that if the value of one or more of your holdings goes down you don't immediately pull those funds out.

Question for the the Guys or the overall community... where is best to invest in funds if I've got no upfront capital but just wanted to get started at £50 per month?

I'm interested. I doubt Damo would be able to name a specific platform and ETF if he's not able to give out advice but it's this kind of information that I'd like to know too. How do I know if the ETF I've just chosen is the "best" one in the short/long term?
@Brown969 Жыл бұрын
A cash ISA isn't a bad shout. Damo did a video recently on his channel talking about the different types of ISAs.

Find a platform with low fees that allows you to buy regularly and cheaply. Pick a fund that is broadly diversified- vanguard for example do index funds that track the world markets. Personally I own 3 ETF’s that track Europe, emerging markets and s&p500. Invest every month and wait a long time. It really is easy and very boring. Don’t worry about market crashes, or market bubbles. As long as you are broadly diversified it’s all just noise over the long term it won’t matter. Never deviate from your strategy and stick at it month after month, year after year. That’s all there is to it.

If we're being honest with ourselves, the vast majority of people invested in crypto are speculators. Few know what they're really invested in, especially when it comes to altcoins

Anyone already opted in to workplace pensions or re opting be aware of what the default fund is. I noticed with my last 2 that they were left in money market funds which I now know are totally wrong for someone at the beginning of their working life. As an example over 5 years in my last employers pension I would have been up 130% if they just left it in a global fund. This even accounts for the big dips during COVID and even now I would still be way up compared to the 10% the standard fund has achieved. I feel like this is by design so they keep they're funds liquid and only they profit while inflation is eroding our future pot. I have now withdrawn both to a vanguard SIPP to invest myself. Im sitting in cash while I wait for a crash, I know people say this is wrong but I feel that as I have been let down by my last pension the only way to make up ground will be to time the market.
