Tomu Uchida directed a 5 film adaption in the 60s and NHK´s adaption ran for a full year but also grafted another 1/3 to the story after getting through the novel. The Cyborg 009 mangaka made a manga based on the novel and so on. Look at the Japanese Wiki article for the book (with a translator). It´s one of the most adapted books of the 20th century.

Awesome review! I actually learned about Musashi back during one of my first jobs. A co-worker and I discussed our common interest in anime and Japanese culture. He told me about Book of Five Rings and Musashi himself. The next time I saw him at work, he loaned me his copy of the book. He also told me about the Samurai Trilogy, emphasizing a certain scene. So I had to find this on Netflix and check it out. I loved the trilogy. I've been reading to read Vagabond (only read part of volume one years ago).

Cool to get more info on these. The focus on the personal growth of the main character definitely sounds like the most appealing aspect.

I’ll definitely check out that trilogy. Vagabond is EPIC. I wasn’t aware of the movies, though.

Nice video. Technicolor films do have very rich colours, it's the first time I've seen a Japanese film in Technicolor.

Book is my favourite. My historical nitpick is that some people say it ended after Sekigahara while others after the Summer Siege of Osaka. More in the Osaka camp myself (although you could just also class that as just a conflict that was bound to happen after the era ended etc). I think Historians still are not even in agreement of when it fully ended.

The manga seems really cool but the fact that it is unfinished is a big reason why I never tried it, I only ever experience any passive media when it's finished because if I were to pick up the story again years later, I would have forgotten a lot of it making it hard to appreciate what comes later. The trilogy I might watch but I have been inconsistent when it comes to watching movies and watching foriegn film can be hard since I can't find them subbed for some reason. The novel seems good, and I am hoping the audiobook is free online, some of them can be hard to track down. Plus it's 10 hours and I am inconsistent when it comes media with significant time commitments.

You should definitely read the manga. It's pretty certain that it's never gonna be "completed" as we know it. But the manga has 37 volumes, more than most completed manga. Like he said, the journey itself is a fresh take and worth experiencing for the art alone. Musashi's self exploration journey is complete in the manga and that's a must read for any young adult.

For the manga I would say read it till the end of the farming arc (you'll know it when you see it). You'll know where it's going by that time so it isn't that big of a deal. If you like it enough go and read the book for it. You can use the free trial for audible to get it then cancel it before you pay anything and you should be able to keep it.

@@Eterrath Fair enough, I just don't read manga that much, the temptation to start skimming through them is just too great sometimes, I don't know why I do it.
@civilwarfare101 Жыл бұрын
@@neil4692 I might do that, especially if push comes to shove regarding the novel.

did you read the ending "Vagabond: The LAST Manga Exhibition"?

I definitely need to get to the novel. I'm a huge fan of Vagabond, ever since I read it last years its been one of my favorites. The novel sounds like its right up my alley so I really want to try that out. I don't know if you're interested but I think you can make a similar video about Lone Wolf and Cub. From the manga to the movies to the T.V show I think if you loved Vagabond you would really enjoy Lone Wolf and Cub. Anyways great vid Bob, keep em coming!
