I am getting my first three silkies tomorrow and they are so cute! We do have a smoke alarm, or smoke detectors in the same room and have a big heat lamp.

How do you fix a a chicken laying egg that's been bent backwards
@quailsnest83542 жыл бұрын
Hello, I would like to know about the lamp hot spot, what temperture at the chick heigth should the lamp heat be when you first put them in ??
@TheHomesteadTrail2 жыл бұрын
Generally they say when chicks are a week old or less, it should be 95 F, then dropped 5 F every week after. But I don’t actually take the temperature, I let the chicks tell me how they feel as explained in the video.

How do you fix a chicken leg that was bent backwards when he was born
@Chris-b4w8t Жыл бұрын
Do they need UVB bulbs at all? I'm a total beginner but I have reptiles so I'm familiar with heat and light requirements for reptiles and amphibians, however I've never had baby chicks but I want to raise some so badly
@TheHomesteadTrail Жыл бұрын
Good question- nope they don’t need uvb like a reptile would, just a plain heat lamp.

So where do you put the chicks when you’re bleaching and cleaning out the brooder? How often do you change out the pine shavings?
@TheHomesteadTrail2 жыл бұрын
The frequency of changing the shavings depends on the size of the brooder as well as how many and how old the chicks are, but I’d say on average about once a week

Great we have eggs that are about to hatch

thats cool
@jadeholt51593 жыл бұрын
Is there anything you can use the shavings for when cleaning the brooder? (Compost?) or just trash them ?
@TheHomesteadTrail3 жыл бұрын
We compost! The wood chips take a while to break down but the zinnias appreciated it

My chicks keep pecking each other’s eyes so they are bloody and irritated. They are same hatch day but two different breeds a dark and light. How do I stop the eye pecking it’s awful and the chicks shriek in pain
@TheHomesteadTrail4 жыл бұрын
Poor guys! A red bulb in your heat lamp could help hide the red irritation and blood to discourage it.
@Fattiapples4 жыл бұрын
The Homestead Trail they do have a red light but still peck :/ I’ll try just separating in one large brooder . Only thing is there are 2 offenders so I guess I’ll have to separate brooder into three sections , hope they outgrow it
@SaraBormanSanClemente2 жыл бұрын
what is your opinion about using puppy pads instead of shavings?
@TheHomesteadTrail2 жыл бұрын
Good question- I see lots of people using them so I imagine they’re fine, my only concern is I think the inside layer is like what’s inside a diaper so if they ate some, I’m not sure if it would swell up or how it would be digested. Personally we prefer pine shavings, they encourage scratching which is a very natural behavior for chickens and it’s compostable for the garden 🙂

Heat lamps can be really unsafe and a huge fire hazard. Brooders are a much safer option.

How about infrared bulbs, anyone using them?
@krisalan53272 жыл бұрын
It's my understanding the infrared bulbs are for if you have chick's that have red specks on them, the other chick's will peck at the specks, so use a infrared lamp and the specks can't be seen by the chick's
