My Mom and Dad grew up on small farmers. They picked an Animal named it and took care of it like their kid. Like all proud parents they compared their kid to their sibling's kids. When butchering time happen they cried their eyes out like they lost a child or friend. As time went on the learned not to get to close.
@melissajohnson29355 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how many you get and what their purpose is. I love every single one of my laying chickens and their roosters. If we get meat chickens, you usually get a lot at once and they are ready for the freezer in like 2 months, so you don't have nearly enough time to get really attached. Now if I have a chick that was originally supposed to be for meat but it was sick or get injured and I had to nurse it back to health many I spent a lot of time with them and we bonded, they usually get spared and sent to general "pet" chicken population lol. Many also cull their laying chickens that have stopped laying...I don't do that. They get to retire peacefully here 😂

1 baby chicken needs a few friends.....remember a chicken isn't a cat or a dog..these animals are flock animals and handling them too much can kill them. You need a few more and a brooder setup or you'll most likely loose your chicken to illness. Google it...I'm telling ya the truth....nobody should ever sell anyone "a chick" that's why typically they sell them in a batch of 3 minimum

I raise chicks and the rocks in the waterer is a first rate idea! I always lose a couple because they get wet and die of hypothermia. Also, you must not have many varmints in NC. My first setup was exactly like yours... next morning 25 chicks were gone! I built a secure cage with hinged doors on top made out of 2x4s and chicken wire. I haven’t lost one since! Great video. I wish I had seen it a year ago! I would have had to learn so many hard lessons!

I'm a little lucky as the Meyer Hatchery is less than an hour's drive from me. Almost instant gratification ! No waiting for the mail ! The last time that I was there , I purchased two extra chicks from the grab bin. That means , guess what you got ? One chick has grown to look much like the New Hampshires. The other chick does not look like any of my other chickens at all ! It also is the one with a name. I call it Oddball . And one other with a name. I thought that it was a Henrietta . But , "she" has turned out to be a Henry. So I have an Oddball and a Henry . I have four chicken breeds plus Oddball . Have a great day from Plum Brook Farm.

Greetings from Plum Brook Farm. The chickens are so much fun. A hoot every day ! I use mobile coops which I move every day. And the chickens also free range every day. At night I always have two chickens that refuse to go into the coop. Oddball and one of the Barred Rocks. Those "dumb " chickens are really good at evading capture ! So they usually spend the night roosting on TOP of the coop instead of inside. They will eventually learn because there is a really large Great Horned Owl around that likes a chicken dinner !

You need to separate that bird and put it with only one other bird....try and find one that's not yet figured out that "red color means food" or you will loose your chick....plain and simple.....keep the feeder full of food.....these are omnivores and will eat oneanother if they are hungry....you may still loose the chick......chickens have a way of weeding out the weak...I'm sorry to say...separate them asap!

when folks do irresponsible stuff like giving someone a chick...or a baby rabbit or anything of the sort..it's morally wrong for the animal. Good luck with your chick...odds are a single chick alone will not make it...if you wanna do it justice get at least one more to go with it. Tell dad not to do that to ya again...birds are flock animals and need companionship other than people...if you handle them too much you risk harming them too. Sorry

I just got 3 week old chicks Saturday, one died last night and the other two are doing just fine. They have good heat, clean water and food. What could have happened? This is my first time.
