This is the best detailed and usable description of the pre-launch and launch operations I've seen and heard yet. By usable, I mean the CCP PLAN would copy the procedures and staff methods from your launch description to re-verify their existing figurative launch operations manual for the Liaoning launch procedure.

One of the most amazing things about KZbin has to be how much access we have to seeing people going about their awesomeness. I don't just mean Pail, who is demonstrably awesome, but the deck crew who move this ballet of certain death with such deftness, that it makes whatever the rest of us do look like colouring farmyard animals. I've long held the belief that naval aviators are the best of the best and I thank you for the window into your world.

He’s right about the danger on the deck during flight ops. I was on the deck of the USS Hancock (WWII carrier) with its wooden deck and old steam catapults. I’ve also been on prop planes taking off and landing from the Hancock in the Gulf of Tonkin flying into Danang when I volunteered to go in country. I love these videos and thank you sir for your service. Go Navy and to my leatherneck brothers “Oorah!”

Beautiful professional Naval Aviator. Appreciate the comments. Although I was surface line, I was Communications Officer on the USS Saratoga (CV-60) stationed in Mayport, FL. Pail, my dad in World War 2 was a civilian flight trainer. He taught new Naval Aviators how to fly, i.e. get them a private pilot's license. At one time I wanted to be a Navy pilot, but my eyesight wouldn't let me, I'm near sighted. I love watching your videos, they help me learn more about aviation. The only thing I can fly is a computer, um ... Microsoft Flight Simulator X, though I do incorporate as much actual aviation as I can. Thank you.

I really enjoy your videos. I'm 75, was a "land based sailor." USN, 68-74, ETR-2, NAS Miramar, 70-74, I maintained GCA RADAR and TACAN. Back then carriers used CCA, and I was amazed that there seemed to be no cross training from GCA to CCA. We had 3 GCA at Miarmar, then, 2x FPN-36 QUADs and an FPN-52, the PAR section of the old CPN-4 with solid state IF in the receiver. Went to GCA school in Glynco GA, in the old wooden blimp hanger. I also had part time job at Miramar Auto hobby shop, met a lot of great guys there.

Sir, this has me sitting here with a lump in my throat. Man, do I miss the "roof". The best shot I ever had was as a PAX on a C1 off the USS Midway CV41 back in 81-83. Thanks (on this Veterans Day) for "doing your time" and FlyNAVY!

I was looking at my Dad’s Navy stuff the other day. After hearing ‘Pale’ talk about CAG 17, I thought it sounded familiar. Turns out the Squadron he was in (VA 175) was part of CAG 17 during the ‘57-‘58 Mediterranean Cruise when he was on CVA-42 the Franklin D. Rosevelt (originally the Coral Sea). During that cruise, CAG 17 consisted of VF 171, VF 74, VA 143, VA 175, VF 62, VAW 12 and VA 133. VA 175 was disbanded after that cruise because they lost over 10 aircraft during recovery in high seas north of the Arctic circle. They were doing a search and recovery and the Jet aircraft could not operate in the cold Arctic air. VA 175 was flying A1 Skyraiders, so they did a lot of the work. They were launching with seas crashing over the deck and recovery with the arresting cables was not possible. The aviators basically had to fly over the fantail, cut the power and let the aft end of flight deck come up in the high seas and catch the Spads. My dad told me about the carnage and another shipmate of his confirmed the story with me. They did not lose any pilots, but a couple of sailors on watch did get washed overboard when the waves washed over the desk. Dad said the operation lasted a week. They did not find any hat they were looking for and separated most of the propeller driven aircraft. He also said being on the flight deck, you had to keep moving because the ice would grow on your body from the salt spray. My dad got transferred to ATKRON 44 (The Hornets) after VF 175 (Devils Diplomats) got disbanded.

This sequence reminds me of an incident in our squadron (VS-24) that occurred during our Fall 1967 Med cruise. We were in a flight of 4 S-2Es being launched to establish a sonobuoy pattern checking for Russian subs in the Med. I was the co pilot in the plane on Cat 2 (USS Randolph CVS-15 was an Essex class carrier which only cats on the bow) another one of our birds was on Cat 1 and we were in a delay. The bridal on Cat 1 was in place and the hold back set in the tail (different system than the current one which started with the F-14s). The pilot in the left seat of that bird did something he was not supposed to do - he set the parking brake because he had a muscle cramp. He worked the cramp out and forget he had the brake set when the delay ended and he saluted the shooter. The plane launched just fine except for the two skid marks on the newly painted deck. Control came up and asked him if his parking brake was set, to which he replied "No" as he released both the mike button and the parking brake and then said on the intercom "not now". The Randolph still had the old hydraulic cats and was not slowed a bit by the parking brake. Of course the story make good telling in the ready room. The Randolph's Engineering officer was not amused by the skid marks on the deck.

Wayback machine memories. Only for me it was TA-4J Skyhawks and when we went to the boat I final checked on the cats. Then did any jet shop work if needed but it was rare as we went to the boat for carrier quals for around 7 to 10 days at a time and the jets went to the beach at night unless broken. Then we fixed them and they flew the next day with only a couple exceptions. AD3, VT-24, 04/77-04/81. 42.5 years since I got out. I joined the Navy to see the world so they sent me to Texas.Thank you Sir for the memories. Be safe and Fly Navy!
