Hey Rob. I think the most important thing when switching between alto and tenor is to just go back to the basics with building a good tone. Lots of long tones / slow melodies or my 5 min workouts. Also, get a good idea of the tenor sound you’re going for. Otherwise technically everything is the same with fingering etc. Good luck!

Nigel, you mention that the mouthpiece should be perfectly inlined with a neck - but in that case, you have to tilt your head to the left. Is it OK to rotate the mouthpiece slightly clockwise (and maybe rotate the neck, too) to compensate for the nonvertical position of the sax?

Hi Dobrisa. If you are playing standing or sitting with the sax in front then it’s always best to have your mouthpiece in-line. However if you are playing with your sax to the side you might be more comfy slightly twisting your mouthpiece. But…the neck should always be lined up as I mention in the lesson so it works properly. Hope that helps.

Hi Nigel! What would you say are the biggest adjustments to make when switching from alto to tenor? I've been playing alto for many years. I started playing soprano 2 years ago. I would like to play tenor: I have a Yamaha 5C mouthpiece and have played a bit on a few horns here & there, but haven't "got the feel for it" yet. Any tips?

Do you use the same size reed for all of your saxes? I have been playing the baritone for years, and I am using a #2 Legere Signature reed. I have recently come into possession of a tenor sax, which I have never played before. Should I go with a #2 reed for it as well?

Good question - it really depends on the type of mouthpiece you have on each sax. If you are using a similar size mouthpiece then yes you could use the same size reed. Either way, a size 2 is a pretty safe bet to start with. Have fun!
