1) Polyps moving 90 - 100% of the time. Perfect! 2) Most corals placed not in direct line of the pump grow more evenly, in general. 3) Tabling corals need flow under, besides strong light. 4) Tunze pumps are the most reliable ones!! Thumbs up, boy!
@sunnygoold94495 жыл бұрын
This is probably the best video about flow out there - going through the settings and working out a flow baseline based on turnover volume and then showing the polyp movement we should be looking at... GENIUS I also think that getting the tank rocking is important... but I didn't know about the Wavebox till I saw it - I have a Gyre for my build but I've definitely put a wavebox on my list for the build. Aaron's also said he changed his pumps to aim directly at the corals and got much better results. So now I can put the pumps behind the islands instead of in between them. So this is super helpful - thanks ;)

I run my 200 gallon mixed reef with a single pump, a Jebao CP-150 and it's not on full power. It's near the surface on the overflow, so I have no pumps on the glass. Just a few stags. Having no visible pumps really makes the tank look very natural.

I love this explanation of flow! I know you’re wondering why 😁😁 so I’ll tell you - it’s because I too, use multiple powerheads with some directing laminar flow straight at the acros at the top of the tank. This flow intersects with the flow from the Random Flow Generator nozzle from the other direction. Because I have a mixed reef, I need areas of more subtle but still turbulent flow and using multiple powerheads with the RFG does it in spades. But one thing I’ve never done is calculate the actual turnover, so I’m going to do that.....🤓 I always enjoy looking at your tanks, thank you for the eye candy you’ve shown us here! 👍🏻👍🏻

There was a BRS video recently where they tested different amounts of flow/pumps (66x/132x, sparsely arranged tanks) on identical tanks with several sps frags: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKGlgHeVes53qLc They checked for coral growth (alk consumption, coral weight) and visual differences in each tank and found no significant effect. My interpretation is, there is a need for sufficient flow for the sps to thrive, but no "the more the better"-effect. Obviously, a somehow alternating current removes detritus etc better than a constant, unidirectional flow and may be in a way more stimulating for the corals. But having a bunch of different flow patterns over the day seems to be more like a gimmick to me.
