Hello friends! Wanted to clear something up: Hall of Smoke is considered a standalone by the author, but she has written a companion book, so on Goodreads, the story Temple of No God gets listed as #2. She has a “review” for it clarifying that it’s not a direct sequel 🤗

This is why I love your channel so much. I'm a mood reader, but worse the last few years - I am easily bored and distracted from books even though I desperately want to love them all. Most of the best books I've read in the last 12 months have been from recommendations you've made. Can't stress enough how much I value that.❤

This is such a great idea. I have only been reading fantasy for about 8 months, and I constantly feel like I'm drowning under all the possiblities out there and I still don't even know what kind of sub-genres I love and what I don't, so this is a wonderful place for me to start. I'm going to try reading all the ones you recommended and see if I can narrow down my preferences with them. Thanks!!

This is such an interesting idea and it made me think about creating a progressive stack. I came up with one related to jinn. All of these are adult but they increase in plot and world building complexity. I’m thinking… 1. A Master of Djinn - P. Djèlí Clark, 2. The Golem and the Jinni - Helene Wecker, 3. Alif the Unseen - G. Willow Wilson

i honestly appreciate this video a lot. i've always read YA fantasy but ever since i first subscribed to your channel, i've been dying to read brandon sanderson. with this being said, my mom recently bought dune and i was going to read along behind her, she's enjoying it a lot so i tried to pick it up a couple weeks ago and couldn't get past 24 pages, i tried again a week later and couldn't get past 40. it was really frustrating for me because there's nothing i'd love more than to be able to read through them but the amount of information and characters and POV's switching had me so confused that i had to give up. what frustrated me most about this is that i'm worried i won't be able to get through the mistborn trilogy because it's also adult. i'll be 21 in april but nothing made me feel as dumb as trying to read dune so hopefully i can take these recs and work my way up a bit--i just feel like i'm missing out on so many amazing adult fantasy because of this.
@DiscoInfernum2 жыл бұрын
Dune is an incredibly politically focused book that tackles a tonne of really complex themes like colonialism, white saviours, dictatorships and religious worship as well as having a really expansive sense of worldbuilding and lots of moving parts to it's narrative. It's definitely a big leap to go from YA to something like Dune, and Mistborn is absolutely nowhere near as complex as the former. I'd definitely say go for Mistborn if you really want to read Sanderson it cause it's usually the series I recommend to people who either don't read fantasy or don't read a lot of adult fiction in general as well as being easily the best entry point to the Cosmere universe. My dyslexic mum who literally started reading fiction a few weeks before she read it loved it so I'm sure you won't have too much trouble with it, and then you can work your way up to the Dune's and ASOIAF's of the world lol

Not sure if this advice will help or not 🤷🏻♀️ but don’t feel afraid to take notes. Whether notes app on your phone or paper. I’ve taken notes for GoT and the first 100 pages of Jade City. For Jade City, I wanted to make note of character ranks in the hierarchy, what the skills were, the ranks, and family connections. I did so because I knew I was going to love the book, but I just wanted to make sure I remembered critical info. Funny enough, I found someone’s written note about the same info in my library copy of Jade City (half way through). Someone had the same idea. I left it in there for the next library patron to use, as mine was typed on my phone.

I am not a fantasy reader, and this video is so so great. Thanks for your point of view and recommendations. It inspires me to try some fantasy, I mean, that fantasy which is more elaborated. I have read fantasy but it has been one that happens on known cities, so I think of that more as tales. Real fantasy like so unfamiliar to our reality is still something I have to explore. THKS again.

The one fantasy book that I recommend to readers new to the genre is an older work, but it is still unmatched as an introduction to fantasy: Legend by David Gemmell. I like the quote from one of the Goodreads review - "Legend is certainly not the best written book ever, but it is most definitely one of the best books ever written." Perfect description of Legend.
