The grozier pliers can also be called combo pliers as breaking pliers are flat jawed with no teeth or curved lower jaw. A tip for keeping your foil where it belongs is to use a binder clip and place it all the way on the roll, This will keep it from unwinding and you can write on the clip the size/color. Super handy when you start adding lots of sizes and backing colors to your pile. This was a great video! Keep up the fantastic work!

I hope I can give some tips for you. Im new at stained glass but i have certifications in soldering so id like to give some tips. To make your soldering tip last longer and keep it from burning up, use a tip tinner and use it before you start working and right before you turn your iron off. This helps to melt the solder easier and saves your tips. If you start to notice that your tip isnt melting your solder instantly, tin your tip. If you notice that you applied too much solder in an area, you can actually turn your tip flat and scoop some solder right off and use a copper metal sponge to dip into. This takes the solder off the tip faster than a wet sponge. Or you can use a solder wick and heat it over the solder lumps (apply flux first) and it sucks up the solder. Very helpful when trying to get all your beads even. Soap and water is not necessary to remove flux. Flux comes off easily with high % rubbing alcohol and leaves no residue. Use a no lint rag or you can use qtips for small areas. If you have a joint or bead that isnt smooth and you arent happy with it, let it cool for 1 minute. Brush flux all over the entire area and add a small bead of solder to your iron tip, touch the area and slowly go over the area. You have to apply the flux always to reheat any solder. But dont keep reheating it without cool down time in between or you will compromise the foil and weaken it. If you are unhappy with any old projects, you can use solder wick to remove all of the solder and start over. Use flux to reheat with the above step and wick it all up. You dont need any type of polish for the solder joints. Solder dulls because of flux residue. High % rubbing alcohol will shine up your solder if you polish it well because it dissolves the flux.
@StainedGlassDIY4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, I'll try alcohol when I get my hands on some. Do you polish your work?

First: when buying glass for stain glass artwork, does it already come stained (like in different colors) or do you have to stain them yourself? Second: how much would stained glass go for and how would you ship it if it’s an online stained glass store? Third: What’s the best shipping method? Just trying to learn a little more, I’m going to use my amazon credit to try and get most of the small stuff and have up for the bigger things and make small pieces before creating a website

Hi really enjoying your channel and love this video since i have not done any stained glass stuff yet and now know what ill need to get started. Anyway quick question ive been making tree of life sun catchers with agates and a friend strategically placed the idea of doing stained glass in my head. Ive been using steel rings in my projects and im wondering if i can solder glass to the steel ring? i just finished watching your vid with the dreamcatcher with the feathers and you used brass for the ring because it was easy to solder to which led me to my question about the steel ring. Thank you for any help with this.
@StainedGlassDIY3 жыл бұрын
Hey I don't believe you can solder onto steel, it will be tough and you might need higher heat other than the iron. Brass, copper, tin, zinc, iron are all fine.

I saw some cheap stained glass grinder that has no place to put a sponge on top. Is the sponge necessary and do we must use the novacan cooler in the water? Also, when the grinding the glass with the grinder, will the glass powder/dust fall into the water or do they fly everywhere into the air?
@StainedGlassDIY4 жыл бұрын
The sponge will wipe the grinding bit to keep it clean and always wet. The coolant is good to have but probably water is okay. All that glass dust goes on the sponge and also wherever the bit spins it out. It could get messy!

@StainedGlassDIY5 жыл бұрын
I've never tried with a Dremel but the main goal is to grind smoothly and safely so if you can set that up somehow, then I would guess it could work. Just not sure how efficient and effective it would be either. I end up using the grinder quite a bit. Be safe and let us know what you find!

Most people use lead based solder since it's easier to work with. I have not used lead free solder before but the option is there for you if you'd like. Normally for jewelry and accessories. Lead is okay if you wash your hands throughly and not ingest and use for decorative pieces.
