Only thing I worry about is lead fumes during the soldering process and the glass grinder bits getting into your lungs
@sunbearglasscraft8065
@sunbearglasscraft8065 Жыл бұрын
With proper ventilation, plus ensuring your grinder has plenty of water, you can easily work around the safety concerns like that. I always advocate for taking as MANY precautions as needed for you to feel comfortable! For instance, I have a fan directing fumes into my smoke absorber, plus wear a respirator. I also prefer to wear gloves for every step of the soldering/patina/polishing and use recycled paper to cover my work space for easy clean up. I know TONS of glass artists who do almost nothing for safety and they've been at it for 30+ years (not saying this is what you should do!). Just a hobby that has some extra steps for safety :)

@@sunbearglasscraft8065 a well known glass artist in my city died in her 50's after being ill for years. You really can't state working with lead your entire life won't lead to toxic levels that will cause a premature death...

@@sinsinnomore5555 That's so sad. I started working professionally in glass in the 80s and we never wore anything for protection, no respirator, gloves, etc., and I did commission work in both lead came and copper foil day in, day out seven days a week. I never knew anyone who died a premature death, but I'm sure, as you pointed out, it does happen. So many art processes are extremely toxic, so it's better to be safe. Now in my 60s, I wear gloves, a mask, and have a fume catcher.

I have been making and teaching stained glass here in England for a number of years now, here's my tip for removing those glass shards that get embedded in your fingers and hands when you are working. Locate the spot where the glass is embedded and put a good size blob of washing up liquid (dish soap) directly onto the spot, gently rub it in a circular motion around the glass shard, in less than half a minute the glass splinter will have worked it's self out without you having to dig around in your hands with tweezers. Rinse the dish soap off with water. It works for wooden splinters too. I love your video, I wish I could have watched something as useful as this when I was first starting out.

Hi, I was wondering if you can help me, my Dad wants to start up doing stained glass, from simple to intricate pieces, he's never done it before but he's an amazing artist & works as a pipefitter so soldering & stuff is normal to him, I want to either buy a starter kit or buy what he'll need & put it together as a kit for him, any advice or recommendations for kits or individual tools etc that you can think or & wouldn't mind sharing would be so amazing & so very much appreciated. He doesn't want to try a class, instead he wants to do it himself & learn for himself, I have talked him into at least watching some KZbin or getting some books, again any advice is much appreciated, I know this is something he really really wants to do & although he doesn't get to retire from his day job for another good few years that when he does he will be so very bored & this would be great for him, plus I'm very excited to see what he comes up with because he really is a brilliant artist, when I was a kid he drew & painted one of my bedroom walls (all of it) with Disney characters, he just picked up a pencil & off he went, so this will be creative & new for him. Thank you for any help or even just for reading me babble.x

It is too expensive and too difficult for the un-artistic BUT, AS A LOVER OF STAINED GLASS, THE MAGNIFICENT CATHEDRALS ETC all over the world, thank you. And a nod for showing your hands up close and personal and for stressing SAFETY GLASSES, THEY ARE AN ABSOLUTE- you only get one pair of eyes- I really enjoyed your video. Sadly this hobby is out of the question for me- space, money etc but it gladdens me to see a young woman keeping the art alive- I bought a very old house which had lost its stained glass window- somebody had stuck plastic! on a main window- don't it looks AWFUL, doesn't resemble stained glass when the sun hits it- I searched antique shops, found a window I could afford, had some glass replaced ( with period glass) and hung it in front and when I sell my home, it comes with me!!!!! Namaste from Canada

Hello, I'm a newer to this, and the closet solder I could find was 63/37. I really like working with it, but I've heard 60/40 for foil work so often and that 63/37 is mostly for "decorative soldering". I don't know what that means because it all needs to look good, lol. Anyway, my question is: is there anything wrong with using 63/37 for foil construction? Tried googling that but couldn't find an answer, so your answer is greatly appreciated! Dawn dish soap does in fact work really well for cleaning Flux off finished pieces. Thanks again!🙂

Thanks for the warning of cuts x.x I wanted to wear protective gloves and goggles but I don't know if I can handle getting constant cuts so I will just buy stain glass rather then make my own 😅

I LOVE that you pointed out that people making jewelry should be SURE to get "lead free" solder. That was awesome, and really important to tell people who might be making jewelry. I think for most people, the lead free is going to be the way to go no matter what you're making, but some hardcore glass heads still do some lead stuff for stained glass for sure. it's easier to work with and flows better, also the finish on lead-free solder can be a little grainier than either 50/50 or 60/40 and you will need more heat to flow it. I would only use lead free myself but it's a little harder to master. no matter how great your ventilation is, that's LEAD. to each his own on the lead right, but it IS serious stuff, and certainly has no place in jewelry making omg, thkat is horrifying that many people are probably doing that out there without realizing it...or even caring that tnen SELLING THE JEWELRY to others!! . in truth, most people are getting lead from all sorts of stuff already, including their water in many cases. and probably in some of the food they eat as well (including some types of salt even!) but lead solder in the production of jewelery is a truly horrifying thought oh man.

My DH and I are enrolled in stained glass classes with an eye to craft sales as a retirement job. It won't be the first time my hands have been beaten up. When I was a commercial sewer my co-workers and I would compare calluses from different jobs. A friend summed up our attitude once, saying with pride "You can tell we work for a living." A craftsman's capable hands are a beautiful thing.

I clicked so fast! I started a class on thermofusion glass work (might be the wrong name in english for that, I don't know 😅) in September and my cousin is going to lend me her stained glass kit soon. I just fell in love with learning this new craft/art! I'm just a beginner and I can't afford any of the supplies (the class is at my workplace with all the supplies included, thankfully), but I would love to integrate glasswork and ceramics in my art practice someday 😊

In regards to your hands, Wearing proper PPE will help and being creative in finding ways to make things work for you might help. I personally find that different types of gloves helped me for certain projects. IE leather, nitrile etc per appropriate task application. Also using using moisturizer, lotions as needed and drying powder as needed depending upon the gloves and your personal hand sweating conditions.

Well, that was a really useful video 😊! I think I'll be giving it a try, since I want to do some stuff for my home. My only concern is about the patina; I've seen some other people rinsing the excess in the sink... Given the harmful and poisonous effects of such products it doesn't seem to me the best practice if we care about the environment and aquatic life, so do you have any tips on how to get rid of it and clean the patina in a responsible way? I'd appreciate the tips!

So glad I found your video! I inherited some buckets of glass scraps, a kiln, and some jewelry supplies from a family member that passed. I didn't realize that most stained glassnis soldered not fired... is the glass that he used for firing fine for using with soldering??

Hi Jackie! I'm not super familiar with fine details of fusing glass, but I do know that fusible glass is perfectly fine for using in soldered stained glass projects! Ive used it plenty of times and often the solid colors work very well for background for my projects. The only place the glass doesnt cross over is for firing. If its not specified fusible and fired in a kiln it's incompatible and can explode.
