Lewis, what you call a granny knot is just a thumb knot or overhand knot. A better knot is the "figure of eight" which is slightly bigger and will not slip along the line. The whole knot you describe used to attach the backing line to the reel is called the "Arbor Knot" Some reels have a slot where you can thread the backing line through the bottom of the reel to a smaller anchor point inside it, this eliminates a bulky knot which might possibly catch the unwinding line. Tight lines!

Yeah. The tying of the 2 lines was brilliant. I've lost leaders and hooks. I'm a rookie.

I alwAys use an arbor knot. Before spooling. I like the idea of wrapping the line a few time before

So you need both kind of line? The pink and the green kind? I've been using only the pink one. Everything you did looks more professional. Does the second kind of line you added floats even more? And the thing you glued. What is it called?

You can tie a perfection loop on fly line and leader. I like to do the loop so I don't need to clip a fly off and retie to change.

Hi, I am totally new to fly fishing. Do I (necessary) have to have Backing line? If I have 100 yards of fly line plus the leader; why do I need the backing line? With the 100 yards of fly line; I am never going to get to the backing line. Or do I need to cut the fly line? Does the fly line needs to be only a few yards long? Please help.
@anthonychiappetta92259 жыл бұрын
Tony caruso the fly line is for casting homie the dacron backing is your line, if you do that you wont have any line to fight the fish on lol

Anthony Chiappetta Got it! Thanks bro!

+Tony caruso also, I think you mean 100 feet of fly line not yards.

so that loop at the very end is where you tie your leader to? is there any way you can tie the leader and fly line without the braided loop?
@tjarkinson918810 жыл бұрын
By using a double surgeons knot
@jakesteele541310 жыл бұрын
What does backing do?
@Flammefaen10 жыл бұрын
It's just extra line for the fish to run / fill the reel.
@Scott64a8 жыл бұрын
Braided loops? super glue? What's so wrong with a nail knot? All you need is your reel, line and your backing. Too much technology when all anyone has to do is learn a freaking knot.
@robbyellenberger88107 жыл бұрын
Scott Roy were do you get your backing
@TCFarms4 жыл бұрын
@@robbyellenberger8810 You can buy it, or just use heavy fishing braid. The actual fly line backing will probably be cheaper. Honestly in a pinch, I'd use anything though for backing.

whats the reason for the backing?? why not just put the line right on the reel??
@BenJamison77407 жыл бұрын
Draconus324 in case of a big fish
@44925732 жыл бұрын
You put the backing on correctly but you didn’t put the fly line on correct. The fly line went on the reel Correctly but the fly line spool the line was coming off the top when it should of been the bottom. Always bottom to bottom. Thank you.

What's backing
@fullstrutn8 жыл бұрын
I didn't understand backing at first either ,but it's to take up space on the reel so that fly line isn't in a tighter roll around reel ,it will lay on the water better. Made from dacron ,,also if a big fish peels off all your line you've got a ''reserve'' in backing.
