Any advice on fishing a lake with lots of crayfish ?

@@davidgent6473 Hi David, I do occasionally get problems with crayfish when river carping. On large public lakes it’s the poisson chat that can be a nightmare. Even rock hard baits get tuned to the size of a pea in a matter of hours. I’ve never had any confidence fishing meshed baits or these wraps you can get. My solution is to use rock hard baits as hookers Nash do purpose made “Hard-Ons” (don’t laugh that’s actually what they call them lol.) which are purpose made for the job. The Nash Cultured also have a rock hard centre. I also just glug up standard baits out of the bag and air dry them until they are marble hard. Bait screws are a real bonus when using baits this hard. Despite this I’ll still have to re-cast every 4 hours lol. You also need a really robust rig. A multi rig made with 35lbs Skinlink is pretty bullet proof (it even has a kevlar core). I’d fish that with the coating fully intact so nothing can mess with it. Here’s an old video on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5zHnIBrZ8mGp5o Swap the standard Nash claw for a size 6 chod claw though as it works better and the eye is large enough for 35lb Skinlink. The other option is a long D-rig made from Nash Heavy Duty snag leader. No How-to on this yet but I’ve done a short video to give you an idea: kzbin.infoCh032Nsihcc?feature=share. @@davidgent6473 Good plan mate, I don’t use plastic baits, I think they’re dangerous because they can be eaten by the carp. I also don’t think they work unless fished over a large quantity of particles. Boilies all the way mate. The Scopex Squid is a available in a hardened version in sizes up to 24mm 😜

You forgot one small thing, a popup can sink in your test, but at 6 meters deep the pressure push up your baid so make sure its also sinked to the bottum

One lesson I learnt years ago about tying the knotless knot was - when starting the winding around the shank, go in the direction opposite where the eye wire joins the shank again. (difficult to describe it) In other words, go to where the shank starts to bend into the eye. Otherwise, you might be fighting a fish and the line at the eye slips through that tiny gap and will then start to unravel and finally, the whole thing comes undone. I'm sure you've described it elsewhere, but always worth mentioning. I like your closing comments about the simplest of rigs. There's a saying, KISS - Keep It Simple & Stupid. Don't overcomplicate things if you don't have to.

Hello sir! You're right, we missed this one off the list and you’re absolutely right, winding the first turn directly over the join in the eye of the hook can lead to disaster. Yes, very important! Not only because there may be a chance of the line pulling through the gap, but the sharp edge where the hook wire butts up to the shaft can actually cut through your line.

Hi mate, glad that you liked the video! For the knotless knot shown at the beginning, I used the 25lbs Nash Armourlink. It’s a supple braid which sinks well and has excellent abrasion resistance. It’s my go-to choice whenever I need a supple braid. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Mark, I’m not familiar with the clips myself but I’ve just watched a bit of their video where he’s using it with a helicopter rig and I can see how they work. TBH it’s so easy to do exactly the same thing with some light mono that personally I wouldn't use this type of system but the concept of using a rotten bottom type connection for helicopter rigs in certain situations is 100% valid. It’s certainly preferable to dumping the lead every time like the Heli Safe systems do. Cheers, Matt.

​@@MarkSexton887It kind of depends what rig I’m using and what the rig will be sitting over. If I’m sure the bottom is hard or firm then I’d try and keep them close to the deck. If I know it’s a bit choddy then I’ll sit them 2” up. TBH I use bottom baits for most of my fishing anyway but that is how I set them when I use them. Cheers, Matt.

'Stiff Hinge Rig' @5:35 Placing the weight above the hinge will sink / push the 'Hinge' into any soft silt and prevent natural movement of the bait, thus defeating the point of having the hinge in the first place. Personally, I think putting any sinker weight directly before the hinge allows the hinge to still move freely. So sorry, I do not agree with placing a sinker weight whether it be split shot or a swivel knot bead above the hinge. Other than that, great video.

Hi Danny, thanks for the feedback! I’ve been testing the Nash swivel knot beads in both large and small sizes. I featured them in this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3LWgmZ4hdNpgNE They are the perfect partner for a stiff hinge rig. TBH I’m not sure I’d change the setup as a single or over bait as the same weight/popup combination should work in either scenario. Just make sure to tank test them and bear in mind that the small size will only just sink a 15mm Nash popup and these things do vary from tub to tub, let alone from brand to brand. You can obviously add extra tungsten putty on the shoulder of the bead but it’s so much neater to use them out of the packet. Cheers, Matt.

Hello again Matt. I bought a spool of Nash leadfree leader. When I splice it I can pull with two rig puller and it’s fine. However, when I pull one section of the loop it comes free. What am I doing wrong? Thanks Tony

Hi Tony, you are not doing anything wrong. You’d get the same result with any spliced loop. It works in a fishing situation because the load is applied to both sides via the uni knot and the swivel at the other end. All you have to do is make sure that you have at least 3cm - 4cm length of splice and it will work great. Cheers, Matt.

But the spinner rig isn't a complicated rig it's one of the most simplest to use and it works, because the stiff boom material allows it to consistently reset and the hook can be changed in a matter of seconds and it's such an effective rig and many styles and patterns of hook can be used. But it's just a very over user rig because of how simple and effective it is

We in the uk are lucky enough to have really good quality bait but its expensive £12 for frozen or shelf life boilies,we are now only allowed 2 kgs of bait to enter the EU,as far as end tackle goes,look at the fox,esp,nash,ridgemonkey,korda gear,its all available to you good folk out there looking for a great fishing experience,just like the rest of us,the most important thing is,we are all quite jealous of you out there,we have the most deforested area in europe,that cant be good for the water

Hi Rick, I don’t know what a mosquito hook is so I had to look that up lol. They look to be the right style. Similar to a beaked pointed chod hook but whether they are strong enough and sharp enough is another matter. There’s only one way to find out 😊 Best of luck, Matt.

Thankyou very much for your advice. I tie all my own hooks as simple hair rigs. Following your advice in passing the line through the front of the hook instead of the back has transformed my fishing. I returned to fishing 3 years ago after a gap of 35 years. In that time fishing at Walthamstow and Hampstead heath my grand total of fish was a ten pound bream and a ten pound carp. In the last 3 months since following your advice I have caught a 34lb carp and a 20lb carp plus half a dozen bream up to ten pounds. Your advice definitely worked for me. Thankyou.

When I was just learning to tie my own rigs 4 years ago I made the same mistake tying the knotless knot, started using the Ronnie rig as it was easier to tie and catch rates went up, i thought it was just the Ronnie rig being good but I realise that I was just not hooking fish

Hi Ben, thanks for sharing that. I’m pretty sure that you are not alone in this experience and it could go some way to explaining the popularity of the ronnie rig. I know it’s the modern way to fish but you’ll never convince me that I could catch more carp on a ronnie rig than traditional rigs. I’m not keen on the ronnie rig for lots of reasons. Hopefully this video has inspired you to revisit some of the simple, classic rigs that are still extremely effective and always will be. @@matthewcollinsangler I no longer use the Ronnie rig to be honest with you, I keep it simple in my fishing, I use only 3 rigs, one for bottom baits, one for small wafters and one for pop ups, the ‘combi hair rig’ which employs a braid hair and a flourocarbon boom, the hinge stiff rig for pop ups, and the noodle rig for wafters, each comes into their own on different waters, the hinge if it’s a really weedy/ choddy water, the combi hair when boilie fishing or when lots of small fish are present, and the noodle when fishing over particle, especially when using casters, I use each rig for their hooking properties with the employed presentations and baits and each are relatively simple to tie, I usually pre tie rigs at home so I don’t have to worry about tying on the bank, but yes I have realised the value and how deadly simple rigs can be, and they have lead me to captures up to nearly 40lbs at 16 years old, so I’m pretty reliant on em😂

@@pooley4891 Certain types of quick change swivels are very strong but I’ve seen some that have failed. As a general rule, I avoid quick links for catfishing, they’re fine for carp though.

I use 10 lb braid for main line with a 10 to 15 foot mono leader. I had a carp that was peeling off line, I tightend the dran and all went limp. Pulled the line in and the mono had broken at the braid knot. Time to find a new knot. This was a first time.

Yeah, it’s happened to all of us. Better to fail on the bank, than fail on a fish. I would suggest that the problem is the choice of mainline. 10lb braid is not suitable for carp fish IMO. You’d be better with 40lb braid or just 12-15lb mono.

You need to use heavier braid and probably heavier mono if that's truly what broke. If you continue to use the smaller braid, you will need to tie more - tie a bigger line-to-leader knot and cinch it like you're trying to break it

Usually if I have braided mainline I tie an improved clinch (Improved half blood) knot in order to have an extra sense of security if my knot ever slipped. Also another simple solution could maybe be cutting your tag end a tad longer just to be on the safe side

Hi, I prefer to use a single or double uni know with braid, then Ieave the tag end long as you say and blob for extra security. I don't use braided mainline, it's too dangerous for the carp and rarely necessary.

Sorry mate, didn’t realise we hadn’t responded to your question. As you’re in the US, I’d use Berkley Big Game as it’s readily available. I’ve used loads of it, go for 12 or 15lb. If you’re connecting to a leadfree leader or leadcore, I recommend the 5 turn single uni knot for the Big Game. If you’re tying to a swivel, I’d use the 5 turn blood knot or the palomar.

When I started to watch this video, my first thought was, _"Oh! Crap! What am I doing wrong?"_ 8-((... However... After watching this video, as far as I can see, I'm doing nothing wrong... _In YOUR eyes!_ ;-))... My knotless knots come out the right way. I was actually trying to work out how someone could make the line come out of the eye, the wrong way? 8-\\... Quick change links are always masked so nothing can come loose. And More often than not, I'd prefer to use a tighter tube but wet it before putting over the link. Then I know, nothing will come adrift. I always wet knots and pull knots tightly before using them and check that they're perfectly aligned. Any slightly off skew, are discarded and I'll restart the whole process again. Better to spend another 5 mins on a rig, than waste 10 or 15 mins plus playing a decent carp, only for you to lose it simply because a knot you made, failed. And most importantly, my hooks are always checked before each and every cast. I even witnessed someone lose 5 carp on the trot without any reason he could figure. Only for me to politely tell him when I came to help land the last fish, _"Did you know that the point of your hook is broken!"_ He was mortified! The simpler the set up, the less knots, links whatevers you use, makes life a lot easier. And the less there is to go wrong, the more fish you put on the bank. But a great video. Everything you said is succinct and easy to follow 8-))...

Hi Matthew I've been watching a few videos and I've noticed you never have any kickers/heatskrink tubing on your hooks to help turn the hook. is there a reason for this or is it a confident thing. I honestly can't remember when I didn't use HST to create a kicker. I have massive confidence in the krank hooks and made a rig without HST and it turns and holds perfectly without the kicker or tubing. Just wondering is there a reason to this or if its just a confidence thing 🤔

Hi Aaran, that’s a great question. You’ve probably seen my carp hooks video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKmqnZ-MZ7-Wa9E) where I explain why I don’t use kickers. For me, kickers should be used if they add value to the rig and solve a real problem rather than a perceived problem. Last winter, in this video: kzbin.info6aqfKgngJcY?feature=share I wanted to experiment with using 12 lbs Nash Zig-Flo as a hooklink material for bottom baits rather than the more standard fluoro. It worked great but I found I needed a small kicker to control the exit of the hooklink material. I also think it worked well because I was using a long shank hook. I don’t normally use them but this was only a size 8 and it’s not much longer than my normal size 6 Chod Twister. So I’d say for me it’s not a confidence thing, it's more about whether a kicker can solve a particular problem. What I’d recommend is that you try removing the kickers from your rigs. If you catch more or the same, then you didn’t need them in the first place. (PS I’m personally not a fan of the Krank hooks. In my tests, the steel is not of the same quality as the Nash pinpoint range and for me they are not in the same class as far as sharpness goes. Hook point strength and sharpness are absolutely everything in carp fishing). Hope that gives you food for thought. Cheers, Matt.

A tucked blood knot is better, what is a zig rig?

My experience is different, I’ve tested literally thousands of knots in various materials between my fishing and our guests at the lake and most of the time the better option IMO is a standard blood knot rather than a tucked version. The only way to know which is the best option (for you) is to do the testing yourself to see what works best. For 20lb mainline, I perform a deadlift test using an 8kg (17.5lb kettle bell) on every knot. It’s not an easy test to pass but with practice I have used the test to improve my knot tying skills. A zig rig is a rig that fishes a buoyant bait a number of feet off the bottom, rather than on the bottom. It's a specialist technique that does work in the right situation and you need to know when and how to fish it. Cheers, Matt

Where the big fat lighter was used as an anchor for tightening down a knot, I carry an old champagne cork to use instead, works well and the line digs in so no risk of it slipping while under tension 👍🏻

Hi mate, the short answer is no. I don’t use or recommend circle hooks for carp fishing. They are blunt with a very in turned point. Circle hooks are designed for predators, not carp. For carp fishing, use a short shank straight pointed hook like the Nash chod twister. Cheers, Matt

Hi Kevin, there's various schools of thought on this topic. I’ve owned my fishery for 12 years and during that time most guests have used some type of running lead system where the lead is retained during the fight. The mouths of our carp are in pristine condition so retaining the lead does not cause mouth damage IMO. In my experience, most mouth damage is caused by micro-barbed hooks that the carp struggle to rid themselves of if the mainline faits. Further mouth damage can occur after the carp is netted. We use barbless hooks only and the carp is unhooked in the water immediately after capture so this minimises the time the carp’s mouth is exposed to risk. Just my personal experience.

I dunno why rigs are talked of as being “complicated” it really isn’t. It first come about in this manner because it would mean retailers could sell more individual tackle. The more “complicated” the more money you spend. Carp tax is also a thing too. One thing iv learned is you don’t need half the shit they tell you. You can make decent rigs with half the spending. Many make rigs which look good to us but nowhere near natural looking on the bottom. Less shit on the floor is more likely to hit a weary fish. Stopped buying main carp brands. Currently buy korum hooks as they are half the price and just as good. Find a decent braid you like and stick with it. I use cheap leads too and do perfectly fine

My top tip is to gently squeeze the pop up under water and release so I takes on some of the water and it'll sink slightly 👍

I agree mate, hook sharpening is not for everyone and I’ve seen plenty of guests at the lake make their hooks worse. I’m an engineer by trade so if find it easier. I recommend all our guests now to change their hooks instead of sharpening them. Cheers, Matt
