I've always thinned with 10% water for the mist coat. I was probably told to do so years ago and have never tried otherwise! 😁 I take it you don't find that necessary?

@@davidshepherd6451 yes you are right, you can if the manufacturers instructions say on the back of the tin. But that means up to 3 coats of a more expensive paint. Where contract Matt sorts out the mist coat and you can finish the ceiling at the same time. If you are using a colour as a mist coat you will have to cut in the walls 3 times instead of 2, but on the other hand if you are painting with vinyl Matt white you can do it your way. But you can’t do it with silk or mid sheen because it would peel off the plaster. I do It my way just because I can get two coats on the ceiling and a mist coat on the walls with one 10l tin for £15, I find this more cost effective due to saving money on paint, time and less chance of the paint reacting to the new plaster.
