How to fix a crack in a ceiling or cornice - DIY

This is how to fix a crack in a ceiling or cornice also known as coving. This tutorial will show you step by step with all the products needed to get a professional result even if you are a beginner. This is a very common problem that occurs for many reasons, however the repair process will be the same and i will show you how to add support so the crack will never return.
The crack in a wall or ceiling will have the same process to fix and repair the issue. Great advice here ~ the only thing I would add is to back block (if possible) to avoid cracking reoccurring. Alternatively, install an expansion joint depending on the amount of movement in the underlying structure.

Fibrefuse is the best product for patching cracks. To be honest though, the correct solution to this reoccurring issue is to install an expansion join and these days, a control join needs to be cut into the cornice also as per Australian standards. You can see this is a high movement area as the wall behind you has cracked also.

The reason it cracks is the movement in the roof trusses. I would have used paper tape instead of mesh tape. Paper tape is stronger I found most of the cracks in ceilings is due to mesh tape. Mesh tape is only to be used on walls. And you will find the cornice will crack again over time. I have seen new house ceilings crack in 6 months due to plasterer’s using mesh tape. Because they get the job done quickly and get paid quicker. They don’t care if it cracks. 20:59

My old occupation. Never ever use that plastic crap on ceilings always use paper tape. V in your crack as well. I used a trowel not a flat knife to lay on mud. This was a good demonstration.

Base coats and top coats are a different mix. You can use an all purpose joint compound that can be used for all coating stages rather than buying individual products for each stage👍
