Hey, I'm pretty new to fish keeping and aquatics in general. I've put down a soil substrate but this caused a bacterial bloom (or so I've been told, personally I think it was the soil tinting the water but then what do I know lol). Should I wait for this to disappear before adding plants or will they still get enough light through?

My dad hates plastic aquarium plants because they take to much surface area and they do nothing
@DuilioBiccari4 жыл бұрын
Plastic tanks do nothing but my tank has that one and lives happy. No water hanges, a little little problem with algae. weekly I clean gravel, glasses and filters (2 small HOB). I don't use ceramic rings or pomice but zeolit (changed monthly) and activated carbon (changed weekly). My tank is full of fishes in total wellness and water is very very clear. There isn't only a way to keep fish tanks, otherwise they would all be the same. Very boring.

So glad this came up as recommended for me! I've got a planted tank and battling algae big time... Thinking of pulling the plug on live plants, but I really believe in an ecosystem approach to tanks and ponds. Another video tonight talked about trimming the plants too. I have the simple plants but I'm thinking I put in way to "fertile" of substrate. Before I switched tanks and used a super nutrient dense soil I had no algae problems. Maybe I need to go back to aquarium gravel...
@PrimeTimeAquatics5 жыл бұрын
Hard to say for sure if that is the issue. Maybe if the nutrients are leaching into the water column? Might be worth testing the water to see if that's the case.
@desireechoate93913 жыл бұрын
My tank is almost primarily gravel and I still have a lot of green algae. It's kind of recent however and mostly because my scheduled timings for light cycles went out so I accidently allow more light then needed as I have to remember when to turn it off. Is you tank possibly getting too much light like mine or near an unshaded window?

Thank you so much! As I struggle with my little 10 gallon planted aquarium. I want to get a larger tank but afraid I will not be able to maintain it with the live plants. This video has helped me gain confidence in my decision. I use fluvial substrate for planted aquarium. But, its so messy when I have to relocate or add new plants.
@desireechoate93913 жыл бұрын
Fluval substrate does get messy. One trick I learned from another aquatic enthusiast (Tanner Serpa via KZbin) is to put patches of Fluval in the spots you plan to plant your plants. Then top it off with gravel/sand of your choice. Then plant your plants. This keeps the mess down by holding a harder layer above it and allows you to have the desired look you want while still having good nutrients for the plants underneath the substrate.

Barb Kelly It’s really easy to remove what ever you don’t want growing in the tank. I cut it on an angle with scissors because I heard that helps keep it from having issues. Not sure if it helps, but mine doesn’t die after cutting.

I finally just started into plants within the last couple months after 20 years of not doing it with my fish keeping. How often should I be fertilizing my tank? Also do I remove the lead weights from my jungle val. I have 4-5 java fern, 2 jungle val and a big Crypt in a 60 gallon breeder (figured you needed to know that for the fertilizer.) Also the tan itself is extremely heavily stocked with 30+ Zebra Danios, several gobies, Striata Loach, 9 Panda barbs and 4 denison barbs.
@PrimeTimeAquatics6 жыл бұрын
Hey Audri! Most of the ferts come with a recommended dosing schedule. I like to put root tabs in every 4-6 months and I’ll do liquid ferts every week or two at the recommended dosage. If excess algae builds up you can back off the liquid ferts a little. 😀

Do you think a colony will get going with this small a start? Here’s where the plants come in one nice crypt for centerpiece moss on one end and wood drift and cholla on other with leafs mixed in,any suggestions? Tank is a ten.

Absolutely - as long as you have a mix they should populate the tank over time! Shrimp aren't picky when it comes to plants. Anubias nana, jungle val (but you would have to trim it back), you could float some hornwort - I would keep the plants easy until everything really settles in.

Question: so, about a 18 months ago I started up a 450liter (I think 100gallons). It was supposed to be tanganykan so I didn't use loads of substrate and I added lots of rocks, and I made a continuous drip system for the water changes that will give the tank about 25L a day (5ga). I couldn't find the fish I wanted (I'm in Italy) so I started adding some easy plants, just like the ones in your video and later I got some angle fish and Denison barbs and electric blue acaras. I finally found some leleupi, and altos and cf chucked them in as well. Then a couple pelvicachromis n.t. And so far the community is doing just fine. I had some diatom/algea problems and added 2 baby ancistrus and a royal pleco with his very own piece of wood and over a couple months the algea was gone and hasn't come back, except on my plants. Their leaves just get covered with the stuff and the plants won't grow I assume becuase the algea blocks light and acts parasitically with the available nutrients. I have three 25watt 6500k leds on the tank which is 60cm tall, they are posed directly on the DIY plexiglass lid. I add jbl ferropol which has iron potassium and some trace elements. PH 7.5, kh 15, 24 degrees c (maybe 75 f) mid range gh, nitrates at 20/25. How do I solve the problem? I f you read all of that, thank you.

Any root feeding plant usually gets root tab fertilizer instead of liquid ferts. I try to limit liquid ferts to only tanks that have plants that require it. Hope this helps! Sounds like a cool tank!

@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks I haven't tried those yet because I was hoping it would be sufficient not cleaning the substrate in planted area. Maybe the extra juice from the root tabs will do the trick. That doesn't explain having the same problem with my moss and annubias tho. I'm not running co2 because.... I just wanted to make it work without co2.... Thanks a lot for responding. I'm glad I subscribed.

Can you use any light for the plants or does it have to be certain specification?
@PrimeTimeAquatics4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the plants. Most beginner plants do fine with the LED lights sized for the aquarium you are using.

For some or other reason, I believe everything you say - seriously!
