i’ve been doing digital art ever since i was a kid (im a teen now), but i never voluntarily learned anatomy, shading, or even tinkering the layers. my whole artist life revolved around observing and copying other artists’ techniques and style. overtime, it gets exhausting. i realized that i can’t improve from just observing and it was time to start learning. i am so grateful that i found you 2 months ago since i learned so many new things like thumbnail painting and basic poses. it’s my birthday tomorrow and i’ll be asking my mom to get me your box set of basic tutorials! i’m very excited to furthermore improve my skills as an artist because art truly makes me happy, from the process to the final result!

Great advice. One thing I would add, and this just my personal experience. If you already draw on paper etc then there can be a huge disconnect when suddenly trying to draw on a pen tablet. I personally never got over this (35+ years of muscle memory is hard to unlearn) but everyone is different, don't be put off, keep trying and find what works for you and above all don't stop enjoying your art.

Same, i don't have nearl as much experience as you, but i just feel so disconnected when drawing on a tablet without a screen, it takes away from the relaxing and fun drawing experience. Right now i'm looking for a nice tablet with a screen for beginners, as that is the only way i feel i can draw digitally.

For those who want to draw on the ipad on a budget you have 2 options: You either buy a refurbished or used model that is compatible with the apple pen Or buy the ipad that costs around 400 something and is compatible with the 1st gen apple pen. Before buying an ipad double check the apple website to see what models work with 1st gen and what models work with the 2nd gen apple pen.

I don't find the iPad even remotely worth it personally. I know social media hypes it up as the second coming but it's so much slower than working on a laptop with a tablet, not to mention severely limited in comparison. I would have sold mine immediately after getting it if the wife didn't use it often.

After watching your XP-Pen Artist 12 review a few years back, I decided to purchase it and I am totally happy with it. I did not even have to swap the pen tip yet (even though they sent several replacement tips with it, so I thought they would break fast). It is small but thus it fits perfectly on smaller desks in front of the monitor. Imo it is perfect for starters and hobbyists. (The drivers act a bit weird from time to time though.)

I am self-taught with using a mouse to make digital art because I was young and had no money for a tablet, and I honestly got pretty good at it, but holy hell the difference it made when I bought a $40 second-hand lowest tier Bamboo tablet. The change in quality and enjoyment I got from such a small device is insane. It's worth the investment even if it's just a hobby. You might think you won't use it that much but for me personally I started drawing much more often after getting it.

I wouldn't say that I'm a beginner on digital art, but I won't say I'm a pro either. Like anybody, I'm learning new tips and tricks to help me improve my art as I progress. I started out small, surprisingly I began with a wacom 'Intuos', and then it was another company that I can't remember :P , until finally I purchased the XP-Pen 22. Money well spent, I use it for all my art needs to this day and I'm happy with it. Trent, your advise comes in real handy when I'm at a stand-still with my artwork, you give me the motivation to keep going. PLUS your artwork is phenomenal ^_^

I've been drawing with basic stuff like Ticonderoga #2 pencils and printer paper since I was a little kid. So I didn't know what to expect out of a cheap drawing tablet. I bought the Wacom One and it's been working great ever since I bought it. I knew I wasn't getting anything fancy, so I'm impressed with how well it's held up after 6 months of off and on use. Maybe I'll feel differently if I go for something fancy later, but for now I'm satisfied with the performance. Full disclosure, I did NOT do much research before buying.

Don’t always get the biggest tablet after my first experience with a tablet I ended up downgrading to a smaller tablet for a bit more portability (wanted to do art in bed/couch) so definitely emphasize Trent’s point on having a comfortable workplace if I could go back I’d get a iPad since I value portability so much although then it would take away 3D modeling so it’s give and take

I was already a gamer so I had a pretty beefy PC, but I did farmwork for a neighbor one summer and raised up an extra $700 to buy a Yinova MSP22u, I knew I wanted a fairly big screen to draw on and that I needed to make sure there was no parallax. (The thickness of your glass can create an angle that ruins the alignment between the screen and pen) Then after that I bought Clip Studio Paint EX/Pro when it was on sale for around $40... and have used Krita and Sketchbook for free as well. Blender is also free for those that wanna dabble in 3D...

@@dragonlorestudios2013 Let's take a quick look at your example. "I upgraded 3 times because I wanted the new features." Okay, so you purchased an inferior product 3 times instead of the superior one right out of the gate, one that in all likelihood would have been fine for the whole 9 years and then some. Sure sounds like you saved yourself a whole lot of money there. As hobbyists, buy whatever you can afford. As someone who appears to need new features yearly, why are you wasting money on the cheap stuff? Also again it's likely a tax write off for anyone doing this seriously or as a student.

Had an XP Pen Artist 22HD once. I think it was just the 2nd gen of their display tablets, which meant the screen / pen were okay but nothing amazing. However, the major problem I had was the lack of support. They stopped updating the drivers after just 2 years and after another 2 it had problems working on windows, only hacks / workarounds preventing it from being just an expensive monitor. Which was why I got a cintiq next, since I know wacom products are supported for a very long time. I don't know about the quality of newer non wacom drawing tablets and screens, or if their support got better. The risk of having to buy several of those devices while just getting a single wacom seems quite a bit higer still though. In that case the wacom might actually be cheaper or the difference not that much anymore, considering how expensive even non wacom products got. Of course one can also get unlucky with a wacom and it breaks just after a couple of years.

Huion and XP-Pen are pretty much neck and neck. If you're new to this and getting your first tablet monitor, you can't go wrong either way. Just get whatever is on sale right now or whatever it the newest. As long as you buy a model from 2020 or newer, the quality is close enough to Wacom (according to many reviewers I saw). On Canadian Amazon, both are on sale right now, with Huion having better deals at the moment. I had a 16" Huion Kamvas Pro, which I gave to a friend's daughter after getting the QHD 24" model a year ago, and they both work great. The 16" I got for $400CAD on sale in 2020, and the 24", I got on sale for $1000CAD a year ago. Another thing, you forgot to mention Krita. I never used it, but my friend's daughter does, and she's been doing some pretty cool stuff with it. She's only 12, and if she keeps it up and is still interested into adulthood, she'll kill it in the art scene.
@JACKjcs
@JACKjcs 2 жыл бұрын
Because apparently Xp Pen has improved their pens a lot (I'm talking about the new model) I will say that Huion comes in third place as the quality of their pens is horrible and in general their tablets are not of very good quality (although they do the job), I have been using Huion for two years (and a little more) and their tablets have very rare bugs, it is always a lottery that they solve those bugs in the next update, although you can live with those bugs, after 8 hours of work you will start to hate that the pen stops working or your keyboard and mouse start doing weird things because of the tablet drivers.

I can say from experience you want a drawing tablet before a monitor tablet. It does not get easier to "see" what you're drawing on. Paper medium does not transfer 1:1 to monitor tablet. I'd argue it transfers better to a drawing tablet. Personally I've had a lot of cramps and frustration with a monitor tablet. The posture isn't great and it's more difficult to draw at the stand's angle with your arm and even worse when you use your wrist.

Same here. It's very unergonomic to draw on a display monitor. I mean, yes, you can get a screen arm for it, but some people (like myself) simply don't have the room for an extra monitor.

If you're going from paper to digital, try placing a thin sheet of paper on top of the tablet when starting out. It helps with the transition, and is a good method to keep some of that sketchbook feel.

My Huion HS 64 is working so much better than the entry level wacom I bought as my first tablet. I had so many pen disconnects and issues with the wacom that I probably won't buy the brand ever again. I'm excited for when I can buy the Xiaomi pad and pen as it's windows compatible which will work with my workflow better than apple products. Do you have a review on it yet?

Xp Pen artist 12, is indeed a good starter piece, specially if u r not able to adpt to a screenless tablet. ALTHOUGH, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MORE EXPENSIVE THAT THAT. Most of those expensive tablets of these white brands will break quite ezly(ex: like an XP Artist 22R, costed 500bucks died in 3days cause of cheap components used in the back to connect wires and usb cables.) Also, they scratch very easily, so either get some tempered glass screen to put on top, or be ready to shell out a few cheap screen-sheets every 1-3months and screen calibration might be a requirement each time you apply a new 1. Oh and be ready to spend some money on Nibs every 1-2 year (You probably will not find a perfect fitting tempered glass screen, but just make sure it covers most of your drawing space, in case of XP-Pen12 I got a iPad Pro 11 glass on top of it) Also, bigger SCREENS DOES NOT EQUAL BETTER PRODUCT!!! What's important is Colour Gamut, and Pen on screen sensitivity, and maybe max resolution like 1080p, 2K or 4K. And that's it, the rest is pointless information, unless u comparing it to a portable option. If u plan to shell out more than 1000€ bucks just get a waccom at least the costumer service replys you...

@@DallasUzumaki well theres many tutorials. So depending what you want to learn you could look up anything. But if i had to start id start drwing bugs. You can learn simple shapes make up every drawing to some extent. Once you get the hang of that you may want to draw other animals. If your hip to pokemon you can go that route. But if people is your main focus. Look up body structure. I used to draw dbz alot growing up. If your interested in drawing scenes. Youll need to learn perspective. Also dont forget to learn how to draw clothes. I learned both body forms and clothing from drawing dbz. If you feel lost look up art fundimentals.

@saramations

Process to become an oil painter? Honestly, the most important parts can’t be taught, it’s all intuition. You can read all the technical books you want, but nothing can replace natural born talent. The only other requirement is you need space, painting irl takes up huge spaces of storage. There’s also more safety procedures involved because of the nature of oil pants.

Is it better to draw on pc with a tablet or on iPad? And what's the differences if anyone can answer.
@yeahgirl11
@yeahgirl11 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on your needs. Drawing on PC is way more powerful than on a tablet by it's very nature of being an actual computer. Some options on a PC aren't available on a tablet because a tablet isn't powerful enough. Again though, it really depends on your needs and preferences. I prefer drawing on a PC because my tablet lags very terribly on many brushes that I want to use. I don't use an IPad because it's a rip off (seriously, look up how they're against right to repair and how they force you to buy a new iPad just because you break your screen or something minor and easily fixable). Do not invest in an Apple product. You're way better off going with just about any other company besides Apple, especially for the price they charge for their products.
