12:00, you do know the masking option exists, right? Far simpler. Also, you are wild for fully rendering parts of an illustration with just your sketch. That is a superpower, haha.

I really liked this video. I'm a novice digital artist and it was fascinating watching your process. I didn't go to art school and took very few art courses in school. I can't really draw freehand very well at all. Hearing you explain how you don't start out "the right way" with the shapes and building up the drawing was enlightening for me because I think like you do (sans the talent to get an image from my brain to my 'canvas'). I don't believe it's wrong though, to draw like you do. I think it's wrong to say that there's only one way to do something, or to say particularly in regards to art, that there's a wrong way. It's only wrong if it's not getting you the results you want in your finished work and anything that does work is "your way". Breaking away from tradition and close minded curriculum and moving forward in this knowledge sharing collaboration of minds from all over the world is just epic to me! Thanks for sharing!

You can save yourself a few minutes in Procreate when changing the layer colors by selecting the desired layer then tapping the magic want in the top left. Use the Hue/Saturation and just drag that puppy to black. Literally takes seconds! As someone who sketches in Navy Blue (cause black just seems to final 😅), this is the last step in my sketch workflow too.

11:55 you can also press once on the layer and then select the „mask“ option. What that does is that if you paint with a dark color it „erases“ the area and if you paint with a light color like white, it brings the line or what ever was there back.

I absolutely love the fact that your work setup is not over kill, super high tech, inaccessible stuff! you know what will be good enough for your workflow and that is what you use. I always get intimidated when looking at the setup other creatives post and it makes me feel as if I cant catch up because that stuff is inaccessible for most people because of the price barrier. Your workflow videos have always been so easy to follow and learn from. I got a lot more into digital art back in like early 2020 and your videos helped me so much with getting off the ground. Went for the iPad Pro, Procreate, and even started getting some of my stuff printed with the print service you recommended at the time lol. Definitely not the only route I could have taken, but it's the one that made the most sense! I've taken a break from art lately to focus on my job, music, and my dozens of other scatter brained artist passions. next time you’re working on something in procreate, try using the layer mask option instead of making a new layer & filling in white! 😄 when you click on the current layer you’re working & and see all the options pop up, select the layer mask option. when you use the brush tool with black ink, it’ll erase or hide whatever you draw over, but if you ever decide you need that part back, just switch your pen to white & draw over the area again to get it back! i hope this makes sense lol but once you get in the habit of it, it’s super helpful! this video was super fun to watch another artists process, thanks for always sharing 🫶🏼

72 dpi is an old holdover from old monitors. Pixels are now smaller on screens, so 96 dpi is the bare minimum. If you have a large demo that uses phones and tablets, you need to 2x that as well (150 -180 dpi). 300 dpi is great for basic printing and clothing as silk screens for clothing don't print as high as paper printing. If you are using vector work, you can often send up to 600 dpi files for photo work, but that's overkill for drawn art. Don't forget to trap your colors under your black layers if you are doing a full CMYK print!

Slight clarification, ppi (screen/document pixels), which is what you're referring to is different than dpi (dots per inch, for print). If you're never going to set your work for print, you can put the dpi as 1 if you want to. A 1000x1000 document at 1 dpi is the same size pixel dimension as 1000x1000 300dpi. As I am now misquoting Dr. Seuss "A pixel is a pixel, no matter how small." This goes for about any screen size (aside from weird software black magic). But what is messed up is the scale/sizing/math font sizes use. They will scale in a physical size different than at 300dpi. Try it out in Photoshop (or Procreate), and see what 1200pt fonts look like at 1dpi vs 300dpi. 72dpi is one that scales the closest for numbers lining up for print.
@beeldbuijs1003
@beeldbuijs1003 6 ай бұрын
A tiny bit of color trapping / overlap is the safest way to go when are using more than one color, not just with CMYK on paper but just as well with silk screen etc. Although I must say that this is less and less common. Digital printers for small editions don't have this problem in the first place and modern, online offset printing services use digitally controlled presses that self-correct the positions of the layers If they do not match up perfectly.

Awesome video! I love that you don't follow what everybody teaches as a traditional method of sketching. It shows that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to art. Do it the way that works for you. (By the way, Procreate has layer masks that are better than your manual method for masking lines. 😁)
@aushamatic

I'm sure you know these but just in case you don't, figuring these out helped my workflow a little. 1.) You can create a masking layer to "erase" and/or reveal your work by switching between black (erase) and white (reveal) on your color palette. 2.) If you want to change the whole layer's color you can Alpha Lock, make sure the color you want is selected, and then fill layer. That way you don't have to manually color over the work. The learning curve was rough for me-I'm still clueless at times- so I thought I'd put this out there. But hey, if what you do works for you, forget what I said. 😂 Love your stuff!!

Just a guess, but as someone who does digital, I wonder if it may be easier to sketch without vector first. Vector is a lot more smooth and refined, so if your not sure where your lines/composition is or still putting it together, I can see it being a hassle to sketch that way.

The looseness and pressure sensitive transparency of the peppermint pencil brush in procreate makes it easier to sketch things out and refine the image. The vector ink brushes behave very differently than the pencil brush and sketching with the hard black vector inks would just feel very wrong to me. It would be like doing a rough scribble sketch with a sharpie instead of a graphite pencil IRL

I'll have to figure out how to map a couple buttons to zooming since I find the stylus zooming to be...janky. The alpha lock method for coloring can take awhile and it’s easy to miss sections, so I tend to prefer creating a layer directly above, color filling it with whatever color I want, then I set it as a clipping mask. If you don’t want that many layers, you can then just merge them. Be careful with merging though because sometimes it does weird things if you merge multiple layers at once and quickly.

You can usually merge layers starting from the bottom one at a time. When there's several different blend modes merging them at once gets funky. I think it sometimes starts from the top for random reasons.

You can use alpha lock and then fill layer to fill the whole drawing layer with black rather than painting over the layer with a brush.

10:18 I used to draw characters on paper as a kid and as a teenager, so naturally my Parents got me countless books to try and help me improve my art… As I was also self taught! And literally EVERY art book I was given as a kid was trying to get me to draw like this, but I strictly only draw in black sharpies… Always have done and always will do😂😂😂 I would also just draw my characters out how I wanted them to look in the final drawings🤷🏻‍♂️😂 My dad used to do a bunchhhhhhh of oil painting too, so he absolutely HATED how I’d draw, and also how I would only draw with black sharpie too lmfaoooo, I just cbfa drawing essentially the same thing multiple times just to rub it out you know..?🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m not able to really draw anything anymore though due to my disability worsening unfortunately… I definitely miss it I won’t lie. I only ever drew characters, never any backgrounds or anything like that really, and they were never really anything special but I still enjoyed it at least, and that’s all that matters at the end of the day isn’t it??🤷🏻‍♂️

Awesome video! I really liked seeing the creative process behind the final piece! The only part I don't understand, is what is the point of making the original sketch in procreate specifially 300ppi, if you were planning on vectorizing it anyway? Doesnt that kind of defeat the purpose of using such a high pixel count in the first place? Or is there another reason that im missing?

He mentioned that he's never sure if he's going to use the pencils or the inks in the final project. It also seems important to him to keep as much of the original art as possible (ie. drawing white over lines). Some artists go back and publish their sketches (Jim Lee for instance) and he would need full resolution. Just some thoughts.

James pretty much hit the nail on the head. I want maximum flexibility for anything I create. There is pretty much no downside to making it 300dpi the whole way, except larger file size, and it gives me options to print even the pencil sketch later.

As someone with ADHD and has such a hard time following instructions or sticking to a "format", I just want to say thank you so much for saying that you do your own thing when it comes to drawing and are also self taught. For majority of my life, it has been a constant battle to just allow myself to draw how I want to draw or being told, no what you're doing is wrong. I get their are fundamentals and specific ways on how you should draw but, I too always found I draw best when I just draw in blocks. Isn't always the easiest but it's how my brain works too. I mean, I can get from point A to B but it'll be a bit of detour to get there 😅

Same, I have massive ADHD/ocd brain, squirrel and it's not for everything, but its often the case when it comes to making and creating things. I often waste my time planning and think of projects from start to finish, get resources ,but then don't push myself to do the project or finish it and get bored and start another. Completing projects and cleaning house with unwanted stuff is my main goal atm., Making dope art, filming it, editing it and create music, merch etc. 10 hundred does a lot of inspiring things, I'd love to meet him and collaborate with him on some projects.

Masking is the method most people use for this purpose.

I’d recommend using the mask option instead - it does the exact same thing but it’s imo more usable because if you I.e. transform the layer or add something in between the two layers you dont have to worry about the extra masking layer

Just throwing this out there for education's sake, since you mentioned it : some teachers will teach you that the "proper" way to draw figures is to rough in torso first, then legs, then arms, and finish with the head. This is because the torso exists in space until it is anchored to the ground by the legs, which must adopt certain positions to do so -- they are the most "locked in" body part because of their assumed attachment to the ground. After that, the arms can flow independently within their own constraints from the torso, then the head can swivel around after all that other stuff is established. I learned this mostly by reading Burne Hogarth's books, but I think it's sort of a standard way to do it. But this all goes out the window, in a way, when you have access to the convenience of digital art and the adjustments it allows after the fact. It's one of those things that digital art frees you up to do incorrectly, which is nice. :)

You could have skipped the Photoshop step be setting you colors in Illustrator by using the Magic Wand tool to select all objects with the same color. Then you could export it to print from there with all the specified crops and bleeds you need for printing.
