A quick flight from Santa Barbara to Monterey in the Aerosoft Bombardier CRJ550 in Microsoft Flight Simulator, going through the startup from cold and dark, programming a flightplan into the flight management computer by hand, operating the autopilot master control panel, and using both NAV, and SPEED mode to complete the flight. During descent into Monterey the ILS failed to pick up (probably my mistake somewhere along the line) so landing was manual - which was instructive in itself. Enjoy!

Quick note - I checked afterwards - I did nothing wrong with the approach - Monterey does not have a glideslope (which causes the symbology to change on the primary attitude indicator) - it only has a Localiser - which you can see as a course deviation indicator on the primary flight display. My mistake for not checking before the flight, and not realising during the flight!

If you go for more realistic flight experience you will probably choose to follow ATC and in that case discontinuities and VECT are better to be kept. Both serve as ATC guidance and for sure ATC will know and see your Discos and instruct you on time when and how to proceed depending on air traffic etc.

Absolutely - it's always a bit false, flying an entire route with the end-to-end route programmed in. I fly online with a group quite regularly that do ATC, and it's much more fun - getting vectored, or receiving late changes to runways or approaches.

Nice tutorial and great to actually use the CRJ, which I've not really since it came out! Need to do a few more time, but simple enough, thanks.

Very helpful! I never really understood how to use speed mode to climb/descend before now.

Amazing tutorial! But just a couple questions. How do you know what flaps to set and how do you calculate the v-speed etc? Thank you!

The aircraft comes with good documentation - so the numbers i refer to in my procedures probably refer to that (it's been a long time!)

There's also a comprehensive dashboard for that information on the performance page of the EFB.

Excellent explanations, of the various systems, helped me fill in gaps in my knowledge. Can you explain why jets use MACH mode and how is it different from regular KIAS. What is the benefit of Mach vs KIAS
@jonbeckett

There's a simple reason - at high altitude the speed of sound is lower - and most aircraft cannot pass the speed of sound (control would be lost due to the shock waves). Therefore, at altitude aircraft are limited by the speed of sound, so the indicated airspeed switches to show mach number as a safety feature.

The seatbelt switch is on the eyebrow panel just above the co-pilot.

Sir, another outstanding video. You are the best (and I watch a lot of aviation videos). But can you help me with one thing… Why do pilots turn off the autopilot on approach? They all do it. I don’t understand that. Is there a quick and simple way to explain that?

Unless an aircraft has auto-land functionality and the aircraft is fully engaged on localiser and glideslope (and in dual mode in the A320 for example), autopilot must not be used below 200ft above ground level (AGL). It's a common aviation law.

You shut the ap off that's why the ILS didn't work
@jonbeckett

No - not at all - not all ILS systems have a glideslope - this one did not - it only had the localiser. That's where there was no symbology on the course deviation indicator for it. I didn't turn the autopilot off until it was obvious there was no glideslope - I didn't talk about it until quite some time after.

If you watch the video CLOSELY you shut the auto Pilot off and then you wondered why you didn't pick up the ILS ABOUT 3 MINUTES AFTER YOU SHUT THE AP OFF WATCH VIDEO CLOSELY
