A beginners guide to starting the Fenix Airbus A320 from cold and dark in Microsoft Flight Simulator - following the functional procedure required to start the aircraft, and safely take off.
I avoid a lot of the procedural real-world checks and balances that a pilot might follow, and concentrate on the functionally essential.
I explain everything we are doing along the way - what the various buttons and systems do - and give you a basic grounding in many things "Airbus" - from the "MCDU" to the autopilot, and the various tablet apps that help us pull together flight plan and performance data.
You can download the start-up procedure for free from:
ko-fi.com/jonb...
Enjoy!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. As my mother tongue is not English, I appreciate your clear and not to fast speaking. The way you explain makes it easy to comprehend for someone who is still a beginner. I am looking forward to see hopefully more tutorials from you.

Thank you very much for making this video. All of the videos I found before finding yours were done by real A320 pilots. While I can appreciate what they do and why it is done, it is way too much for a beginner (like drinking from a fire hose). Your format bridges that gap nicely. I just subscribed and I look forward to more of your tutorials.

My favorite MSFS tutor. You are the best out there, hands down. You got me auto landing from cold and dark on my PMDG 737-600 and I've just gotten the Fenix A320 so I'm back in your classrooms. I really purchased this one for a Delta Airbus pilot neighbor so that he can show me, his kids, and my grandkids what he does up there all day long for work. I thought I'd familiarize myself with it for kicks until I can get him on it. He's a bit busy. It's a different animal from the 737ng but fascinating. Takes a bit more programming but I'm happy to see you program it without simbrief and using LittleNavMap which you've gotten me hooked on. What a great tool and it's free! Thanks again, Jonathan for all your work.

You're more than welcome :) I love that the Airbus and Boeing are so similar. When you get used to it, go look at the A310. It's half-way between the 737 and A320 :)

Love your videos Jonathan, blooming love them. I’m a newbie to msfs and just flying the Cessna 152 at the moment. Can’t wait to get comfortable with flying the heavies. I’m using the Logitech yoke and throttles at the moment but thinking of getting the Thrustmaster T16000m. Do you have any thoughts about that? I hear they are quite a good beginner setup. I’m sick of having to get the yoke out all the time and want something I can easily move to make desk space. Keep up the great work my friend.

I've been thinking about getting one of those stick and throttles for DCS :) The throttle apparently is quite cheaply made though. Just do some research - read reviews :)

It's in a completely different league than the FBW, and makes the stock Asobo A320 look like a bit of a joke. For £50, it's *probably* the most polished aircraft in the simulator so far. It's not just the presentation, features, and options - it's the flight model. In private beta, Fenix worked with real airbus pilots. All of the instrumentation and behaviour of the aircraft is "on the money". That said, it's perhaps not as *fun* as the BAe 146, for example, and requires a BEAST of a PC.

great video, thanks! I can't quite figure out what's going on with autopilot altitude. I have it in managed mode but it doesn't follow the altitudes of the waypoints I have selected (I put five letter waypoints into my flight plan and entered FL for each waypoint in the MCDU). Can you please explain what's going on? Do I have to manually dial in the altitude at all times even in managed mode? Also I find that sometimes I can't enable managed speed or altitude and I'm not sure why.

It's difficult to say why without watching you program the aircraft.

@@jonbeckett Hi Jonathan, I don't expect you to tell me what I'm doing wrong, I'd just like to know what I should expect the autopilot to be able to do regarding altitudes.

@@jonbeckett I had exactly the same problem with the plane. It ascended to my dialled in altitude, dialled into my departure's height, but then didn't ascend to my programmed cruise altitude. I completed my flight at that altitude, but then it didn't start the descent either, and my attempts to try to fix the error in my setup along the way just made things much worse. At one point I was 30,000 ft when I should have been 10,000 ft. After my previous go where I ran out of fuel, I didn't feel confident in trying to fix things with only 4000kg of fuel left, so I made the landing anyway. I actually landed it, reasonably gently as well, but the descent was a rollercoaster of a ride, and nothing about it was good, except the actual touchdown. Also my descent performance told me I needed 2000 ft of runway, I can assure you I needed less than that as my glide lasted most of the runway!! Next time, I will do better. One thing that I think may have caused it, was I accidentality unplugged ground power before starting up the APU, this caused me to have to reprogram everything, but this time I didn't get a conformation message. I assumed that it was because I had already had one for an almost identical programming (just changed for new weather data) but given the issue I had with the autopilot, I'm now not so sure. Anyway, this is mostly a message for the algorithm, I'm really enjoying figuring out this plane and having to face the consequences of my mistakes! Thanks for your tutorials, they have really opened this sim up for me!

The video shows absolutely stock Microsoft Flight Simulator "out of the box", with the Fenix Airbus - a third party add-on that adds a study level Airbus to the aircraft available to fly. I'm running a free navigation program alongside called "LittleNavMap" that helps plan routes.

I use the EFB to set up the flight, it is much more logical and much quicker than having to write down weights and fuel, etc,, etc, Also many mistakes in this video. You never armed spoilers when taking off. You didn't load fuel and passengers, you don't turn on strobes at the gate, only when taking runway for takeoff. You didn't set autobrake for max on taking off.
