Nice review, would like to see a synthetic brush video that covers the various knot types, this video was good for the various sizes but the knot types are all similar (tuxedo).
@AnotherCutAbove4 жыл бұрын
I think the problem being is that most synthetics these days feel and work very similar just with different colours etc. From memory i believe i did this video as i was receiving quite a few questions regarding what synthetic is best for different skin types etc. All the synthetics i use have very soft tips which some people wouldnt appreciate as they want more scrub etc.

Hey! Don't forget to put a link in your comments for my page as well! The reason why I named the boss knot (black onyx soft synthetic) and not the gamechanger is because I did not get authorization from the person who coined the name gamechanger. The knot in the blue handle you've got there IS a 24mm knot, but many of the differences you see in bloom and in performance is due to small changes in hole depth and width. Fun fact, Justin park was the one that actually came up with the name BOSS, I had a naming contest and he won. Anyways, it is my belief that the gamechanger and the boss come from the same manufacturer.
@AnotherCutAbove7 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Marting I’m not doubting they Come from the same manufacturer at all But the characteristics of the knots are completely different. Maybe I’m just crazy though. Regarding the links I will pop them on buddy. I don’t really have too much time normally and forget to do the finer details.

GREAT video! very informative. Even though I only own 1 (beginner) synthetic brush (Plissoft) I rarely use my other animal hair brushes, therefore my future brush purchases will be mainly synthetic knots - They are also way easier in maintenance. Those tuxedo knots looks so cool - Big envy, Mitchells Woolfat lathers real quick and easy with a synthetic, i did not encounter any issues with great lather in no time - as many talk about with this soap - and my water is above average hard. Excellent and informative video. Its a shame that some of the brushes you mention, aren't available directly from UK websites. Anyhow, I'm new to DE shaving and started off with a Semogue 1438 boar hair (which was only £11 I didn't want to pay too much in the beginning as I wasn't sure DE shaving would be for me). But after the time I've spent doing it, I really enjoy it, and I'm now looking at getting some new kit, to not only make my shave easier and more pleasurable, but to also give me a choice of stuff to use. I'd considered a badger, but read that they can sometimes be more maintenance involved, they can be thirsty with your soap (something you mentioned in the video) and having read extensively about synthetics nowadays I'm thinking synthetics maybe the best all-round choice for me. So far I've narrowed it down to two synthetic brushes: Simpson Chubby 2 Synthetic badger. Razorock Plissoft Big Bruce. If I can't decide between them, I might buy and keep them both, as the Razorock is only around £17, plus there's a few Wet Shaving forums around with trade and sell sections on them, if I later decided to sell one.

Thank-you for such a comprehensive video. I have been looking for my 2nd brush from my 'starter' Simpson Pure Badger Duke 2. I've watched a few videos and read some reviews, and have decided to go for the RazoRock Plissoft. A lot of favourable mentions, and incredibly cheap too. I was interested to see you almost exclusively use synthetic, so that made my mind up. Cheers!

Chris, have you ever tried other razorock plissoft brushes? I really like the silvertip with acrylic handle. I'm wondering how that compares to a black wolf knot (or the monster or the bruce which all use similar knots). I have a tuxedo knot and I find it harder to produce lather with than with the plissoft style.
@AnotherCutAbove7 жыл бұрын

@AnotherCutAbove7 жыл бұрын
+Siamac Yamin-Afshar the tuxedo is a very dense soft knot. I find it works best on face lathers! I can get a nice bowl lather out of them. The black wolf fan knot is a lot easier to create a face lather with. The monster knot was ok for me but I don't like the scritch from it, I don't mind scrub but no scritch. I may have had a defective knot however.

As this is a year later and many shaves also, I would like y'all's opinion or advice. Which type of knot is better for face lathering: bulb, fan, or a hybrid between both? I can wip up more lather in a bowl, but prefer the face feel of face lathering. Like Lee, I've looked seriously at Stirling's finest fan. I just have a Omega pro 10048 & am enjoying getting more and more split ends. On synthetic, I would like backbone, soft but able to scrub, and what works best for face lathering. I may not have payed close enough attention to the video. I don't have the $ or budget y'all have to spend on wet shaving, so >$50 USD. If y'all could enlighten me, I'd be much obliged.
@AnotherCutAbove5 жыл бұрын
Hey man you cannot go wrong with Stirling brushes, maggards brushes or razorock! They all offer great priced brushes with great knots. I personally prefer fan knots and hybrid knots for face lathering. One of my favourites is the “Fanchurian” from that’s darn rob! It’s amazing! In terms of a synthetic that offers scrub I can only suggest the “Ghost” knot from TurnNShave on Etsy. It feels soft to the touch but then gives the feel of a boat brush when on the skin. Most of my synthetics, well all of them offer super soft feel with light scrub. Not sure this has helped, let me know how you go.

So I’ve just started wet shaving. I’ve tried a few soaps and blades and now I have another question. How many brushes should one have? You talk about brushes in your rotation. Should I have multiple brushes to rotate or is it okay to use the same one every day until I can pick up some more? Also probably a silly question but, do I leave the lid off of the soap container after using it or close it up? If you close it up right away does it ruin the soap? There’s a lot of stuff to this style vs buying a cartridge every week or so. LOL. keep up the great videos as I have learned a lot.
@AnotherCutAbove5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike thanks for dropping buy and commenting. With regards to brushes I just have BAD which is Brush Aquisition Disorder lol 😂 1 good brush should and will last you a long time and can most certainly. Be used daily. However I would likely stick to a nice synthetic if using daily as natural hair brushes really need a day or 2 depending on the density to dry out in between uses. Natural hair brushes don't like to be left damp after use and it can damage the glue bump holdong it together. If you're starting out I would highly recommend razorock and yaqi for synthetic brushes as their knots are excellent. Yaqi also do wonderful badger knots for the price. With regards to the soap, if you load your brush straight on the soap like I do then I always rinse the residue off and air it out over night before replacing the lid. If using daily I would just leave the lid off all the time until such time I went longer than a day between use. Hope this info helps buddy Best of luck Always here if any questions need answering. Cheers Criz

Brian Magicman yeah the black and white knots are nice but they are not as soft as the AP shave co knots or the knots that Turn NShave and wolf whiskers use. All in all these synthetic knots being made at this present time are very high quality.

@@AnotherCutAbove I've only started DE shaving 2 weeks ago and bought the razorock plissoft brush and absolutely love it I also use the merkur futur razor and feather blades and proraso red cream as well
@AnotherCutAbove6 жыл бұрын
Wow the futur with feather! Talk about a baptism of fire hahaha. You will be able to use pretty much every single de razor if you get comfortable with the futur. Razorock make awesome brushes too! Lovely knots and for the price they are almost unmatched in the shaving world!

@@AnotherCutAbove Yeah I bought astra blades originally to try them out and they felt ok but not "all that" and I purchased a 10 blade pack of feathers and a 5 blade pack of Derby blades and the derby blades were better than the Astra but the feather just blew the others out of the water I can hear and feel the shaving process which, whilst new to me, is music to my ears Do you have an Instagram page at all? Would love to follow you and I've been following turn n shave a for a week and his brushes look insanely wicked too

Hi Chris! I'm French but been a citizen of Glasgow too for 3 years! I need advice on brushes please to a fellow Glaswegian? I have been using a cheap and basic badger Tweezerman brush for 10 years, never contemplating anything else. Having recently turned vegan though and with the popularity of synthetic brushes I took the plundge and bought what people refer to as one of the best synthetic brushes in the world: the Chubby 2. Alas, the first time I used it this week, I discovered that I can't face lazer with it :( ! Quite disappointed. What would you recommend for face lathering? I really like the Wolf Whiskers that you mentioned with Black Wolf brush (fan/bulb), would they suit? Any other recommendation? Thanks pal!! Appreciate any help :)

Check out turn n shave and grab a quarter moon knot! He makes amazing handles and also does basic handles on the cheap To try his knots.

@@AnotherCutAbove Hi Chris!! Thanks so much for the prompt response! I got in touch with Milton immediately and and he got back to me at lunch time, great service. He confirmed what you said about the quarter moon knot being quite good at splaying so I'm gonna go for that. Now I didn't expect to go for a custom handle but they are amazing so I'm currently having a think - so many designs to go for!!

The big downside for synthetics is the lack of firmness which is used to lather. The Etsy link no longer works

Synthetic for me badger farming is cruel we don’t need real hair brushes, promote synthetic
@AnotherCutAbove4 жыл бұрын
Well I could say the same for the creation and use of plastic.
@robertross8565 Жыл бұрын
I will only use synthetic. Don't like the idea of having a badger cruelly beaten to death to make a brush. Executive Shaving in the UK has stopped selling badger brushes for that reason. Besides, from everything I have experienced and read, synthetics have so many advantages over a badger. Just for the record, I am not a vegetarian or an animal rights activist.

I don't like soft brushes
@AnotherCutAbove6 жыл бұрын
Yeah most synths are pretty soft these days however the latest Ghost knot from Turn ‘n’ Shave is super scrubby, heaps of back bone with soft tips!

16 minutes about a brush? I'm obsessive about shaving but 16 minutes?
@AnotherCutAbove4 жыл бұрын
The video was requested as synthetic knots vary quite significantly. It was hoped that it would allow people to make better informed decisions on purchasing. I suppose you don't have to watch all 16 minutes at the end of the day. cheers pal, cris
