Absolutely superb! Not a word was wasted;, instructions were clear, and there were no annoying "fillers" (such as, "The next thing to do is", "Now we are going to, etc. etc.) or 'Ums' and 'Ers'. Other KZbin presenters have much to learn from this gifted teacher and wonderful communicator

It has just been brought to my attention that the latest version has some "improvements" that I was not aware of. The Recolor tool in the latest version now has two new setting options in the tools menu. These are just after "Tolerance" and are a choice between "Sampling: Once" or "Sampling: Secondary Color". To be able to follow along with the video tutorial you will need to choose the second option (two small squares). Sorry to those who have found this confusing and I will attempt to update my tutorial soon.

How do you print out your images to the scale you have within the program? Meaning, i need my image to be 13.5 x 18 inchs, but when i go to print it prints on a single sheet at 8.5 x 11. I've tried all the troubleshooting i can think of, saved as every type of file this program allows for.
@epacrisimp
@epacrisimp 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Timothy,Firstly, I assume that your printer will print to that size. Hopefully, this helps and if not please let me know. 1. Go to File>Print 2. In the Print Pictures box, at the top, are the headings Paper Size, Quality, and Paper Type. Click on the down arrows next to each heading and make your selection. (Do not leave the setting as Plain Paper  if you are printing an image.) 3. If you don't see the Paper size options that you need click on Options.... at the lower right of the Print Pictures box and then choose Printer Properties where you will be able to choose a custom size for your print. Each printer is slightly different, but you should be able to select Photo Printing, Media Type, Size and Borderless or not.Carefully select all the settings available as is it very easy to print with the wrong settings which can be disappointing.

@jakstrieder

for some reason when I try and use tool's on a fresh layer like when I try to use shape's to pull out a box on a untouched layer it's printed onto the image in the first layer. what could be going wrong? steps I fallow. bring up the main image open new layer select colour I want. click shapes click the box click the on the image and drag. when I check the layer's it's not been done on the fresh layer but on the first.
@epacrisimp
@epacrisimp 4 жыл бұрын
The new Layer needs to be one that is selected in the Layers panel before you apply the shape. It sounds as though you may have clicked on the Background layer and that is why the shape has been applied to that layer instead of the one above. Make sure that the new layer is the active layer by clicking on it before applying the shape.

Is the Recolor tool in Paint.NET (ver 4.16.6315) completely just random in whether it does what it's supposed to, fo ranyone else?
@epacrisimp
@epacrisimp 7 жыл бұрын
No it is not random but does need a little fiddling. This is how to use the tool. Firstly, duplicate your layer in the layers panel so that you can work on the duplicate. This means that you can go back to the original at any time for either a comparison or to start again. Have the Colors window open. If it is not showing click on the color icon at the top right of your Paint.net window. Choose your primary and secondary colors. Do this by having the “Primary” color change to whatever color you click on in the color wheel or pallet. Then make sure that “Secondary” is chosen and again click on a color of your choice. If you click on the “more” option in the color panel you can make even more color choices and even select opacity levels of the colors. With the recolour tool selected:-Choose a brush size (I usually make my brush a lot bigger than the small default brush - depends on what you are doing).Choose the desired hardness. Start with 50% for a softer brush and see how that works for you. (100%) will give you a hard outline.Finally choose the tolerance. 100% will make the recolour brush behave more like the ordinary brush tool and will color everything you go over. Too little tolerance and you won’t change much at all. Start with 50% and then experiment.Left mouse click on the area of your image that has the exact color that you want to change and then, without releasing the mouse button, drag the brush over all the area that you want to change. Right mouse click and follow the same procedure to replace the color you first click on with the secondary color. That is, do not release the mouse button and drag over the area that you want to change.Make sure that you experiment on a duplicate of the background image so you can restart at any time. Keep fiddling with the tolerance and the primary and secondary color choices until you get what you are after.I hope that you can follow these suggestions and that you have success.

Where is the layers window or layers option? My menu only shows FILE and VIEW. Is this a free version, and do you have a paid version? How do I get those other menu features so I can follow along? Thank you.
@epacrisimp
@epacrisimp Жыл бұрын
Hi lisag3359, it seems what you are looking at is the “Paint” program that comes with Windows. The software I am using is called “paint.net” and is a free program you can download and install for free from the following website www.dotpdn.com/downloads/pdn.html. (Do not download it from the Microsoft store where you will be asked to pay. If you like the program you can choose to donate later to the developers via PayPal.) Once you are on the paint.net page, under Free Download Now: click on the latest software (today that is paint.net 5.0.9). It will download into your Downloads folder. Just to make sure that the file will not harm your computer, right click on the zip file and choose to Scan with Microsoft Defender or any other anti virus software. Then right click on the zip file and choose Extract All; open the Paint.net folder and double click on the exe file and follow the prompts to install the software onto your computer. Now you will be able to follow along with the tutorial. I would also recommend that everyone downloads the help files from www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/index.html which are very easy to read and incredibly helpful. If you run into any problems just send me a message via the comments section and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

I am stuck at the point where I finished erasing the background around my animal, as at 11.40 in your video. @epacrisimp
@epacrisimp 9 жыл бұрын
derekcolman If you select the Move tool, that tool becomes active and the Eraser tool becomes inactive and you can then move the Selected(highlighted) image into position. If you still cannot move the image(layer) around, make sure that the correct tool is selected and that the correct layer that you need to move is highlighted. Also make sure that there is no layer visible above the layer you are moving or you won't be able to see what is going on. Uncheck (remove the visibility tick on) any layer that may be hiding the layer you are working on.Let me know if you are still having a problem.

Epacris Imp Thank you so much. It worked fine, and it seems so obvious now you have pointed it out, but at the time I did not realise. The tool is actually labelled "move selected pixels". In the past I have tried Gimp and a free trial of Photoshop essentials, but gave up in frustration. I have a project which is just an in joke between me and a pal, and need Paint.net to carry it out, so I have determined not to give up this time and really master this program. The results will then be animated in PowerDirector, which I am already familiar with.

@epacrisimp
@epacrisimp 3 жыл бұрын
@@mohammadahmed7932 If you just stretch the table, everything will be stretched and you may lose quality, especially with the text, and it won't increase the spacing. You could modify the table in Word to look the way you want and then save again as a jpg image. Without seeing the detail, I think that your best option to achieve the look you want is probably to start from scratch and manually draw a table in Paint.net and then overlay Text, using the layers.

I think this is for professional advanced beginners. What can this software be used for usefully? I can create a flag and add images on top of each other with any other software, such as regular Paint, IrfanView etc. I still do not understand what is image layering used for. I am trying to make an image file with a hand seal or hand stamp that I could post over image and the image would not post its square shaped background or any background on top of that image. Is this possible at all? OK, in other words, if I have a library or gallery of images and I want to add on top of every image my completely transparent circular logo on them, without it having a background. Even more. Even after saving the file i'd also, if possible, like to preserve the functionality where the logo can be removed from the image by its owner only without any impact on the image. I would call it true layering or non-sticky layering? Its like a book with pages that looks like one piece until you begin browsing the pages, but when you close the book, it appears solid again. Then you can remove pages from the book and add them in again. Its more like a file holder of an image layers in as it appears as one image, yet with certain code or password can be worked on by its creator. Is that possible and how? What software should I use? Or is this the thing of the distant future?

Hi Cris, I did not solve. Thanks if you can post info.

@epacrisimp 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, You certainly can do what you describe using Paint.net Firstly, to create a logo with a transparent background - Launch Paint.net. and by default the program will open with a new white layer background. In the layers window click on the little icon in the lower left to create a new layer which is transparent. Making sure that this new transparent layer is selected (highlighted) create your design on this layer. (The checker plate design indicates that the layer is transparent.) When you are done you can select the lower white layer and delete it by clicking on the red cross. Now save the logo with a transparent background as a pdn (paint.net file). If you want to use this transparent logo in another program such as IrfanView you can save it as a png file which will preserve the transparency. To do this, when you save the file, select Save As and in the Save as type: select PNG (*.png) Now to use the logo on another image that you can later remove without destroying that image - Open an image in Paint.net. Then go to Layers>Import From File.... and select your transparent logo and click Open and it will open on a new layer above the image. You can now save that file as a new Paint.net file in which you can preserve the layers for working on now or later by anyone with the Paint.net program. In this file you can toggle the visibility of individual layers on and off by removing or adding a tick on the layers, which means that you can now output the image you see as a JPEG which will embed the logo over the image and cannot be non-destructively removed; or you can remove the tick and output a JPEG without a logo. You can add more images as separate layers, change the order and visibility of the layers and have your logo appear or not as desired, over any image you choose and, as long as you keep saving the pdn file, you can come back and make edits anytime you choose without touching the original images etc....I am rambling now as I get excited at the prospects of what you can do with this free program. Anyone can open and edit this file as long as they have the Paint.net software. You could certainly password protect the file, but you would need software for this and this is not my area of expertise. I hope that you can understand my instructions. Please let me know if you have any problems or questions. Enjoy!

I dont have a image list though... When I start up paint.net it has no lists im on 4.0.5
@epacrisimp
@epacrisimp 9 жыл бұрын
LeahPlaysStuff The Image list appears at the top of your window and displays a thumbnail of every image that you have opened, and allows you to switch between the images by clicking on each thumbnail.When you start up paint.net and have not yet opened an image, all that will be showing is a white blank canvas. Go to File>Open.... and navigate to where your images are and select more than one image and click Open and you will now see those images appear in the list.

LeahPlaysStuff Four of the panels in Paint.net can be hidden or shown. These panels are the Tools, History, Layers and Colors. To toggle any of these to show or not show, click on their icons at the top right of the program window. Each time you click on one of these icons, (the first is a little hammer depicting the tools panel) you can make these panels visible or not visible. This does not change anything about them except their visibility.

To show the Layers window, click on the third icon from the left in the top right of the main window. If you click on any of the icons in the top right corner you can toggle the relevant windows on and off. The names of each window appear as you move your pointer over them as well as the keyboard short cut for turning the windows on and off. Hope this helps.

A very common frustration and not as intuitive as we would like. To show the layers window after hiding/closing it go to the top right of the main window, just under the close, minimise, maximise buttons and you will see a row of icons starting, from the left, with a little hammer. Left mouse click on the 3rd icon from the left to toggle the layers window on and off. If you hover your mouse pointer over the other icons you will see a tool tip showing what tapping each icon does and options/shortcuts for the same result.

how do you delete layers from the original product
@epacrisimp
@epacrisimp 8 жыл бұрын
To delete a layer from your project Select the layer (make sure no other layers are highlighted) and click on the red X at the bottom of the Layers window. You can also select the layer and go to the File Menu>Layers>Delete Layer. A shortcut for this is CTRL+SHIFT+DEL

Do you guys know how to move multiple layers at once?
@epacrisimp
@epacrisimp 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunatley, you can not move multiple layers at the one time. However, if you want to move a number of layers to exactly the same position, one way to do this is - 1/ Select one layer and in the menu bar select Layer>Rotate/Zoom (shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Z) and use the controls to postion the layer where you want. 2/ Then select the next layer that you want to be in that same position and apply the Rotate/Zoom to that layer. The Rotate/Zoom tool will instantly apply the previous settings you chose to the newly selected layer. Then just keep doing this for each layer you want to align to the same postion. Hope you can follow that and it helps.

Firstly, make sure you have Paint.net open and not another similar named program like Paint. Look at the title at the top left of the program's window and it should say "paint.net 4.0.21" To show the layers window after hiding/closing it go to the top right of the main window, just under the close, minimise, maximise buttons and you will see a row of icons starting, from the left, with a little hammer. Left mouse click on the 3rd icon from the left to toggle the layers window on and off. Using the keyboard shortcut F7 will also bring up the Layers window.

RaMz Zues To duplicate a layer in the layers panel, firstly click on that layer and make sure that it is highlighted. Then, in the little tool bar at the bottom of the layers panel, click on the third icon from the left, (the one just to the right of the red cross). If you want to copy a selection, make your selection and note which layer is highlighted, then go to Edit>Copy and then in the Edit menu select one of the paste options.

Most common problem for new users. At the top right of the Paint.net window you will see four little boxes with icons. If you click on these boxes they toggle the various windows on and off. From left to right they are "Tools", "History", "Layers" and "Colors". You can also show and hide the Layers window using the shortcut "F7".The other two icons on the far right are for "Settings" and "Help" which are also worth exploring.

@@bitterbugs.1 Thank you for letting me know. I did some checking and there do seem to be a lot of scammers masquerading as good sites to download Paint.net. Never used to happen. If you look at some of the url addresses you will see they start with http - never click a link on a site unless it shows some security by starting with https. Must have the s. I checked out the link I gave you and it is the genuine link but they have made it very easy to click on downloading it from the Microsoft store instead of dot.PDN. Whilst Microsoft store is legitimate you should not have to pay for this program. (If later you want to donate to the developers then that is your choice) Please don't pay. After much investigation and some very spurious sites around I found CNET which is a reputable site - and the URL starts with Cnet has a direct download link for the program and the link to Cnet is download.cnet.com/Paint-NET/3000-2192_4-10338146.html However, just 'cause I say its OK does not necessarily make it so and you should always err on the side of caution. And while I checked out this link, CNET does have links to some programs that I would not touch because they are out to rip you off. Anyway, thought I would pass on what I think is the best and safe link - the CNET link.
