The blues typically revolves around 7th chords... not major 7th, and no minor 7th, but dominant 7th chords.
Those chords can come in a few different shapes and sizes, but there are some basics that you really should know, and that's today's video.

Great lesson for the newbies our even someone like me who's played for years but only used 2 of the 4 shapes (E shape and A shape) because I was too lazy to use the others even though I can play them. So by using the C an D shapes I've doubled my selection of chord shapes. And it also good as you say to be able to pick out the root notes of whatever chord your playing. This has forced me to finally learn the note names up and down the fretboard. Thanks for the advice.

It's helpful to understand what comprises a Dominant 7 chord, especially when you want to play more than just chord strums. First, you should know that a Major chord is made up the root note, the third scale tone, and the fifth scale tone. A Dominant 7 chord is a major chord plus the flatted seventh scale tone. Since the seventh scale tone is one fret lower than the root tone, the flatted seventh is two frets below the root. So you can take any major chord and lower one instance of the root by two frets to make a Dominant 7 chord. You could also raise the fifth scale tone three frets to get to the flatted seventh scale tone.

IMO, the more important takeaway starts @4:03. Good guitar players rarely play 5- or 6-string chords. Not just because they are difficult, but also because they have a muddy sound.

I never left :) I don't always do videos regularly here on KZbin, but my email list hears from me every day. I am trying to be better about my presence here, however.

Nice way to sneak in some more caged lessons …..I don’t even want to know the G7 ,(though I’m sure I can guess/figure it out easy enough) I can’t make a full G shape ala up the neck via caged …

Somehow after a year either my arthritic knuckles have bulged further or knurled up worse but i now have gaps with my 1st finger bar against the fretboard that are about impossible to get certain strings fretted …i can lay flat and get full first finger bar and 6 strings fretted but i certainly i add in 2,3,4 fingers my first finger rolls making a gap at or just after knuckles.i try to adjust (flatten out the rolled 1st finger ) then im muting string under my third finger when playing 7th chords… damned if i do damned if i dont …fricken youth coming back to bite me again .broke fret hand/knuckles so many times and after first time and a bad set by dr. I have curled and twisted fingers ….😕
