This is awesome. You know what the mandolin world is missing that you could provide? A version of the CAGED for the mandolin. There is very little out there and like the guitar it would unlock the instrument. And you do this thing better than any other. Just a thought.

Funny this video came out when it did. I have been messing with adding mandolin to the arsenal for a little while now, and part of that is working through the "Mandolin From Scratch" book by Bruce Emery. He starts with these very same chords and works his way quickly into simple tunes, then chop chords and lead playing. Plus his writing style is fun and humorous. The book really fits with what Guthrie is saying here. Highly recommend! The same author also has some fun guitar books as well.

I've been playing guitar for almost 30 years now. Last few years I'm thinking about adding a mandolin to the equation. It's a totally different instrument, but I hope the learning curve won't be too steep for a 40 year old thanks to my guitar experience. It doesn't seem that hard! Thanks for these quick lessons!
@regulargeoffАй бұрын
At 46 now I’m about 2 years into playing mandolin, like you following 30 years of guitar. As GT says, it really works out some different muscles so that takes some getting used to. Otherwise I had to learn to spread my fingers a bit more than guitar. Learning British/ Irish fiddle tunes and some Bluegrass has really refined my picking technique which has helped on guitar too.
@MartinLuxenАй бұрын
@@regulargeoff Interesting! Definitely worth checking out for me then. Thanks! And learning something new is always good brain training ;)

My first mandolin was a cheap Johnson brand. I had a hard time not calling it my little Johnson………😂. I always had trouble keeping the A strings in tune. I replaced the 15 gauge strings with 16’s and have never had a problem since.
@guthrietrappmusicАй бұрын
I’m glad you were able to solve that tuning problem with the heavier strings. You have to spend a lot of money to get a great Mando.

Guthrie: "I'm not a mandolin genius...I know just enough to get by." Me (who has played mando almost exclusively for 16 years): " I can't do about 85% of the things you did in that intro." LOL

Yeah, Guthrie, i really wish i could contribute to your tip jar, but right now I'm barely "getting the ends to meet." I'm hoping to make a visit, after i get my business going, like hopefully spring. Then i can contribute by gracing you with my presence, lol. Naw, i won't be the "visitor that never leaves," I'm hoping to just meet you, have a short convo, and we'll see. Or maybe we'll watch you perform and if lucky, get a handshake and a beer. Or whatever. Anyway, once i get a little more "fluid," I'll be able to help support your lifestyle, or whatever you want to call it! Sorry to be going on about this, i just don't want you to think all i do is "take," and never "give." As ppl who know me will tell you, I'm very generous and giving, as long as i have anything to give (other than advice!) OK. Enough with the jokes. Nuff said. Signing off now... 👍👍👍 Oh yeah, great mando licks! Lovin' it. 🤪

The tuning is literally backward and upside-down from a guitar, string gauge notwithstanding. From a chord shape perspective, wouldn't that be similar to taking a right-handed guitar and playing lefty, without restringing? Thorsten Koehne plays this way, and it's pretty amazing. And then, theoretically, alternate tunings become understandable.
@biggmann9169Ай бұрын
Please could any mandolin players out there comment on this question (apologies if this sounds very basic but this applies to the one I have available in the family) The mandolins I've tried appeared to have crazy action and string tension. Is this typical of the instrument and what would you suggest doing to improve it?
@sjperry54Ай бұрын
@@biggmann9169 I know where you’re coming from. I’ve tried a bunch of Mandos over the years and a lot of them are hard to play. Like anything else, a good setup by someone who knows mandolins will go a long way to help playability.
