Even with this brief history of Europe, as a Pole i must say that A) when showing all brutal and often religious wars between western countries, but, at the same time not showing the longest and peaceful union between two countries enjoying religious freedoms and rights - Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth - that created the largest and strongest country in Europe for the next 250 years and treating it as there was nothing there... it's a bum. B) Plus not showing the first modern European constitution - The Polish Constitution of 3 May 1791 is a bum (vid claims the French Constitution is the first, what is not true). C) Also, not mentioning A SINGLE word about the Polish-Soviet War of 1920 when Poles (against almost ENTIRE EUROPE) stopped the spread of Communism to Europe... and especially the Battle of Warsaw won decisively by Poles, which is assumed as one of the most important battles of all the times while spending several minutes on Spanish Fascism War - is a huge bum on the side of the creators of this vid. D) But probably the biggest bum of them all, since it's the closest to date, is claiming that only Germany invaded Poland during the 2WW completely forgetting about Ribbentrop-Molotov pact between Germany and Soviet Union and not saying a single word about the fact Soviet union attacked Poland 17 days after the Germany fulfilling it's obligation to Nazism. PS. Not to say completely anything about Solidarity Movement in Poland that sparked the fall of the Berlin Wall... is just another example.

Belisarius conquered all of the Italian Peninsula, north Africa and south Iberia. "Byzantine" is a modern term, it was still called Roman Empire. No no no no. The Visigothic Kingdom map is all wrong. Charlemagne was named Emperor of the Romans and he was never Emperor of the HRE, that state only formed centuries later. NO NO NO NOOOOO. Louis the Pious kept the Germanic tradition of dividing the empire amongst his children. Charlemagne did not do it because Louis was is only surviving son, so, when Louis died he divided the empire between his sons, West Frankia would generate France, East Frankia the HRE and Middle Frankia which was given to his eldest son and encompassed the two Imperial Capitals (Rome and Aachen) was conquered and divided by his brothers and nephews. Seriously, there were pagan kindmos in italy during the time of Otto the fist? And I finish the video. Scandinavia logs in too, wondering what continent we belong to as Europe was raided by the Vikings? and for the first time being given a permanent home?? Our ancient families did most things right - having the correct genetics (moving both ways), and speaking indo-european/proto-germanic languages to this day. Sure, most of us live on the Fennoscandian plate, but that is considered to be a part of the European continent both in geoscience, archaeology, history and social sciences and any academic endeavour. The UK and Norway both lost 2/3 of their total population (peak levels in Europe) and are not even included in the Black Death of "Europe" it seems, even though we were both hit hard from being such important shipping/trade-hubs in Europe. I do not think we are ready for an American revision of European history just yet, as some of them seem to think that Jesus lived in the US which is a bolder claim than even the Catholic church made during their heydays of selling millions of pieces of wood claimed to be taken from his cross some 1500 years earlier. It is good that European kids learn that history is less than linear and often quite foggy and interwoven.

The Jacobite war was not about independence for Scotland, there were Jacobites all over the UK. It was a British civil war. Those who wanted to restore the Stuarts to the throne (complicated because it also became about religion) and those who didn’t… most of the big battles were Scottish soldiers in the British army vs Scottish soldiers in the Jacobite armies. It was common at the time for aristocrats to make one son support one side and another to support the other because they weren’t sure who was going to win. Charles wanted the British throne! Yes he had more support in Scotland so he thought he’d start there, but he saw himself as the rightful king of the United Kingdom.

Obviously. Kind of a videogame timeline version... depicting clipart armies full of buff weightlifters in shiny helmets where only one tribal civilization exists at a time. Lucky the photographer was on hand to capture the birth of Socrates... and video from the Iron Age forges. Ha ! But I like seeing the names of various groups pop up on the map. Getting flashbacks on the maps from grade school textbooks with a somewhat different emphasis. Whatever Europe is, it's not a continent. It's easy to be flippant about this ambitious condensation, but picking up elective courses in a liberal arts college probably wouldn't leave most students with a more detailed takeaway on "Western Civilization" and I'd be no exception. Yet my hackles go up at the suggestion that social hierarchy is the "crux" of European civilization. Not the crux of civilization in China? Or India? Or in the empires of the pre-Columbian Americas? So I am glad I was through with academe before Cultural Marxism really took hold. Even so, there's nothing like a 2-hour KZbin course to suggest how much one does not begin to know.

I'm only going to comment about the part of the Ottoman invasion into the Mediterranean. They did not gain complete control of the Mediterranean. Not for lack of trying though. They tried to invade Malta in 1565 but failed. The Ottomans attacked Malta with a 40,000 strong army. The Maltese defended their islands with just 700 knights of the Order of St John and around 8000 islanders consisting mostly of farmers and untrained people. And hence, the Great Siege of Malta. It was a very important point in stopping the Ottoman reach into Europe. Pity it wasn't even mentioned. Edit: might I also add that Europe is so old that 2 hours doesn't do it justice. You should expand and take your time in more videos.

overall i really liked watching this it was great to get an overview and a mostly accurate timeline to get informations about the european story. i had some issues to the usage of some pictures that really didnt fit the content of the narrator. also to clarify germany didnt fight austria in the seven year war, it was perssia what it not the same. there really is a big diffrence between germnay and perssia. also the russian revolution is after the great war/ world war one. but overall i really really enjoyed watching, remebering and putting stories i head in to temporal context. i can recommend watching thit to get an overview about the european story.

If anyone is really interested in European History, there's the official AP EURO textbook called "Western Civilization" by Spielvogel. The best version that I've been using is the 9th, updated version. It's about 1000 pages, but it's very high quality and I plan to buy the textbook so I don't have to lend it after this year of AP EURO is over. Hope this helps any curious people looking for accurate European history (well, more in depth and accurate, not that this video is completely bogus info you know! Kudos to all of the time and effort put into this video.)

Well I'll write 2 things that were not mentioned that have heavy impact on the History of Europe. 1. The Siege of Constantinople ( 717-718) where the cavary of the Bulgarian empire and the Byzantine forces demolish the arabs resulting in the loss of around 200 000 arab warriors and after that they conquer Spain. 2. The Battle of Adrianople where the forces of the Latin empire ( mostly crusades ) were defeated by the Bulgarian military And if someone is interested in massive medieval battles can read about the Battle of Achelous ( 917 ), depending on the source the total number of soldiers participating in this battle is between 120 000 to 180 000.
