Alyssa , thank you for the precise information (: I’ve been looking for exactly this ( I cut one of mine for the first time, and didn’t know what I was doing ). Luckily I placed the cuttings in water in an opaque container . All of your varieties look great , so you are obviously know your stuff. I have to transplant my large dragon wing begonia to a better pot, and I’m interested to see what soil medium you use. I’ll continue watching👍

Hi Alyssa, I was searching KZbin looking for info on how to take care of plants, and came across this video. I recently bought a cane-like begonia and wanted to learn how to keep it healthy. Your video did that for me today, thanks for sharing your tips, info, and love of these plants. And I also subscribed to your channel, because of the following reasons; 1.your knowledge & love of the plants 2. the tone in which you delivered the message was soft and humble 3. you expressed the information in a concise manner...in other words, everything was easy to understand. Thank you.

I watched that video too 🙂 The propagating of Rex begonia using leaves is difficult for me, and I didn’t have success with it yet. What worked for me was propagating by putting a heathy stem (with one whole leaf intact) in water, until it is rooted. Then I would transfer the stem into well hydrated soil, and keep it that way for a couple of weeks. Nothing would happen for a couple of months, and you would think it will not work. Then one day I saw a little leaf sprouting out from the soil. I felt so great 😀 I guess being patient really pays off in my case.

Hi I really enjoyed you’re video, but I still have a questions like when do you water them? Do you give them humidity or where do you keep them? And lastly what kind of potting medium do use?
@alyssarentzjessop2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I use a indoor plant soil and add orchid bark to make it a little less dense! I know they would probably enjoy humidity but they really don’t seem to be bothered by the lack of humidity. They really do seem to be the least fussy of all my plants! I keep them where they’re getting pretty good indirect light, but again - they’re not fussy! They seem to do well with lower light as well, but tend to get “leggy” if they don’t have enough light.

What lighting, what's your humidity level and home temperature? I live in MI and have East East West windows. Mine keep dying! I mean within 2 weeks of bringing em home. You make it looke like they're the easiest plants ever. I wanna be like that with begonias 🥲
@alyssarentzjessop3 жыл бұрын
Ahhh!! I feel for you! Honestly my begonias really are my easiest plants. The humidity in our house is low but they do get plenty of light! Temp is probably typically between 60-70 degrees. It really does seem like no matter where I put them they do well for me though. What do yours look like when they are dying? I’m sorry I totally feel the struggle, but just with different plants 😂 for example, I have the HARDEST time getting my peace Lilly to flourish even though they’re supposedly the easiest plants 🤷🏼♀️🤦♀️
@ArtsInDespair3 жыл бұрын
@@alyssarentzjessop hi Alyssa! Yeah so I brought home some very big mature begonias from my local garden/green House last week and the guy actually told me to just neglect em like a succulent. I did, and then my new big probably year old begonia started to drop! She needed some water and perked right back up! These new begonias are a success for me! However going back to what I was experiencing before... I got all my rexes from lowes, I'd let em be for a while to acclimate to my home and though the soil was wet from the store, leaves just kept dropping, I also noticed many of the leaf tips getting dark curled and crunchy. Like maybe they were getting water logged. Maybe it wasn't my fault and I purchased them healthy but way overwatered. Maybe I bought a healthy plant, but took home repercussions!
@alyssarentzjessop3 жыл бұрын
I think you’re exactly right!! I would bet they just drowned them before you ever got them 😭 but the happy news is that YOU didn’t do it 😂😂 I have had that happen before…what’s worked for me is carefully removing the plant from the sopping soil and putting it in better well draining soil instead 🤷🏼♀️ I love big begonias!!! They have seriously become one of my favorites. It sounds like you’re doing great with your new ones! ❤️ I’m happy you’re having success!

Oh funny, 2 days ago I cut up my begonia to do a little experimenting. I want to see if post card propagating works on elephant ear begonias.
@alyssarentzjessop3 жыл бұрын
Wait...post card? What’s that???
@brookeweidow22423 жыл бұрын
Well I guess its called postage stamp, not post card. Its where you cut a leaf into stamp size pieces and place them on moist soil. After several weeks, the vains should have shot up new babies.
@alyssarentzjessop3 жыл бұрын
Ohhh yep I bet that’s similar to what I tried with my begonia Rex plants. I failed. But I wanna try again! My leaves just rotted. Not sure really what went wrong, so I’ll have to revisit it. I’m guessing maybe they were too wet? 🤷🏼♀️ I’m curious to see how yours turn out!!

I'll let you know what I find. I have some in barely moist soil and some in pretty wet soil. I also dabbed mine in rooting hormone.

I cut a stem on my polka dot begonia so i can propagate and the leaves become soft even it's already in the water propagation. Is it normal? 😭
@alyssarentzjessop3 жыл бұрын
It might be that your cutting is too long! Mine that I took in this video are pretty long, and I might actually shorten them. It’s just a lot to provide with water when the stem isn’t taking in that much. if you do end up cutting your cuttings down a little just make sure there’s at least one node still so your roots can grow out of it! I’ve read that single node cuttings have a way better chance at rooting successfully. Otherwise it’s good to keep the stem cutting 4-6 inches or so. The other things you could check are that Changing the water, and that the water doesn’t have any harmful chemicals in it. Make sure your cuttings getting as much light as possible! I hope that helps!
