I'm a behavior therapist with only 2 months experience. I'm currently working towards the RBT credential. I must admit I would never buy a reinforcer unless my employer reimburses me. I absolutely love what I do, my clients, and my work environment. I even always go the extra mile because I understand the therapy we provide is the client's medicine, but I am still an employee, a person who holds a position in which I'm compensated for. My responsibility is to simply implement the treatment plan, not to spend my hard earned money on reinforcers. That's the employer's responsibility.

yesss agreed! I love these videos, they’ve helped me so much in the field and even helped me pass my RBT exam. But that is one thing I strongly disagree with her about. I work in homes and drive 40+ miles a day and I don’t get paid for it, I pay for my own gas, so yeah $5 every two weeks adds up when you consider how much driving in home RBT’s do, not to mention the amount of miles we wrack up on our cars & how that causes us to get more frequent oil changes, etc. It’s already expensive, BT’s shouldn’t feel bad for not wanting to buy their own reinforcers unless they’re reimbursed or w/e
@cj6112
@cj6112 2 жыл бұрын
@@marianac2037 Agreed! I work in home and do not get reimbursed for any drive time or transportation costs. 5 dollars here or there really can add up. I understand and truly value reinforcers but for an RBT making base pay and not getting reimbursement for expenses is very challenging. I much prefer making new reinforcers out of everyday items and getting creative so not only am I saving money but the client gains all that creative thinking as well.

Yep I agree .I do end up buying reinforcers myself but yeah let’s not let these extra costs go untouched especially since the wages won’t let you spend that kind of money anyways

I'm an RBT, have worked primarily in a clinic for the last few years. I don't understand why in home RBTs have to buy their own reinforcers! Our clinic has toys available for us to use and parents purchase and provide edible reinforcers for their kiddos.

Thank you for standing up for these kids. The message you sent out was perfect. I never researched the topic, but I just felt that in my city it is not about making a difference in a kid's life. It's all about the money. I have been doing this for years. I have been a ghost BCBA with no certificate, just naturally learned. as I raised my son and learned how to build behavior plans and implement them for years. Finally, do it with credentials. My son just graduated so I am ready to share my knowledge.

That’s an awesome question that I’ve been meaning to touch on! You do not leave the children with the reinforcers because they become “satiated” which is just a fancy word for bored of them! Always bring them to and from session. I’m so happy you found my videos and I hope you’ve learned a lot! Thank you for the comment🥰

When I worked as an ABA technician in clinic it broke my heart to see therapists that did not take the job seriously, fudged data/daily reports, and didn't try to make it fun for the child. Videos like this give me hope for the next generation of differently-abled kids

Whatever company you work for sounds kinda backwards to me. The RBT isn’t making as much why should they be the one to buy stuff? And the BCBA’s at the company I work for are the ones that make to token boards and stuff like that…idk just sounds like odd policies to me.

I feel like you're in a different position as an RBT because I hear you mentioning a lot that you're in the home? I work as an RBT at an ABA facility and so many of the things you're saying you do, we are actually told the opposite and told not to go out and buy things, not to change the reinforcer unless our BCBA gives the okay or unless our child is new and we (the RBTs) are pairing with them and they're in free operant so we can get their preferences of what their reinforcement will be. I'm sure it's a lot different in home rather than at a facility so hearing all of this is so weird to me. How did you end up as an RBT that worked in homes? Are you through a company? I promise, I'm not picking on you, I'm genuinely curious and have questions.
@amsfrazier
@amsfrazier 4 жыл бұрын
Also, I did notice you speaking about buying reinforcers for our kiddos. We are told that we aren't allowed to do so. Trust me, it's hard not to because I see so many things and think, "So and so would love this!" But, unfortunately we can't where I work. I absolutely love my job and every day is different. I just got my RBT so I was being bounced around a lot with two different kids every day as an ABA so I'm excited to finally get my own child that I can get to work with every day ☺️ A lot of this information is very useful. I especially loved what you said regarding making sure you're being excited during praise with our kids. I absolutely agree! I've actually had another RBT tell me I'm too nice and that kids won't listen to me if I don't have a stern voice. Unfortunately, that's not my tone of voice and yes, I can use my "mom voice" when need be but I feel like we all work differently and that's okay because we're not all built the same.

Hi! Yes our jobs can definitely vary depending on our employers and location of work. I provide services through an agency that has all of its RBT’s go to the client homes/ school/ daycare. In fact here in Miami, (where I live) going to the client for services is more common than working at a facility. Not sure why you would not be allowed to buy your clients reinforcers though :( I hear this often and it bums me out. It is One of my favorite parts of what I do, personally😩 I’m so glad you asked! There is so much to learn from each other and asking questions makes us both more knowledgeable on what else is out there! I hope I answered your question. Stay safe❣️

Thank you for this Anna! I honestly do not feel like I have been reaching my fullest potential as an RBT thus far, not because I didn't have the intention to but because I have just felt a bit lost. After my 40 hour training I went right in and haven't honestly been 100% sure what my job is "supposed" to look like since. After 6 months in the field I realized I want to go on to get my BCBA at some point, but I know I have a lot of growth to pursue and there are a lot of tangible things in here that can help me with that. Oh my goodness THANK YOU for your disclaimer on choice of this profession. It makes my heart so happy to know that there are RBT/ BCBA out there, in different parts of the country who have the same heart and understanding and dedication and I just want to make sure that you know your message matters too! I always say, you have to be able to give 110% to each client, because if you are not truly invested, what are you doing? Because you you cannot be efficient or successful in this field. Because it matters, it matters so much and I don't know of many jobs that could be more rewarding than ABA (the new way not the old ABA) but it comes with a HUGE responsibility and commitment required, because exactly like you said ( and I love the raw emotion bc I am the exact same way)it matters because it's a life, their life, the parents lives, you go in and you restructure the entire dynamics of the family and you can make some mistakes and that's hard, but if you aren't invested you are GOING to make mistakes, and yeah you just I'm glad to know there are more of us out here who have the passion and drive to be willing to proper train and create even more technicians

Just a tip for those kiddos that have side bias when picking things like reinforcers, if they pick somthing consistently on the right. Switch it to the left, and then what I do if that doesn't work is I put them top to bottom or diagonal to see if that makes a difference and usually it does.

late comment. your reinforcers you buy and bring yourself (or simply bring yourself, could be from clinic), you take with you when session is over? (New training RBT so it may be a stupid question)
@ABASource

Yes never leave any toys with the clients. If you do the client will become satiated to the toy and it will no longer serve as a reinforcer.

This video made me smile!! Always learning so much from watching your videos! I’m viewing a couple tonight and I just can’t believe I’ve been missing out on all this info! Also, shout out to you for incorporating your humor in these videos 😂 sound effects for reinforcement when you say it’s free, too funny!

Thanks so much for all the infomation! Like many in the comments, I'm in the process of becoming one. It is apparent how passionate and full of love for your children you are, and it makes total sense why you would seem to be very upset over people not doing a good job, lacking commitment. It made me feel a bit attacked and disliked, although I didn't have the chance to screw up (yet). A more positive way of communicating would've made it easier for me to retain the information you shared and especially be motivated by it. I hope that makes sense.

Hi Chantal, Thank you for the comment. I just wanted you to know that as an individual, that is how I feel the need to communicate to those that are in the field for all the wrong reasons. I’ve seen many upsetting instances of neglect towards clients. Once you begin the job, I’m sure you will see it too, and it will hopefully arise some passion out of you. The way I spoke in this video is just one way I am able to express mine. Please, if the comment does not apply to you, then it is not for you! I hope you can understand.

@@ABASource Oh, excited about your response! In no way am I comparing my knowledge and educational level to yours but I work with kids continuously for over 10 years now (babysitting, nannying, Au Pair, child care assistant) and each child I had the privilege to support and accompany - no matter for how long or short - is in my heart forever. When I see nannies on the playgrounds on their phones while their little babies/toddlers just want to run around and play but they're strapped in in their strollers, I literally give them the worst death stare until they finally move their frickin butts and take care of the children entrusted to them!! Not even gonna bring up nannies yelling aggressively for no justifiable reason (like an imminent threat). I can sooo relate to your frustration as I can't imagine not giving it my everything for my kids. I personally felt getting a bit tensed watching your videos but obviously they are yours and the way you put how you're expressing and processing your emotions makes total sense! My motivation was truly to give you this feedback because your videos are so informative and I'm excited to binge watch all of them in the next days! Have a good weekend!
